Change detection in children with autism: an auditory event-related fMRI study
Autism involves impairments in communication and social interaction, as well as high levels of repetitive, stereotypic and ritualistic behaviours, and extreme resistance to change. This latter dimension, whilst required for a diagnosis, has received less research attention. We hypothesise that this extreme resistance to change in autism is rooted in atypical processing of unexpected stimuli. We tested this using auditory event-related fMRI to determine regional brain activity associated with passive detection of infrequently occurring frequency-deviant and complex novel sounds in a no-task condition. Participants were twelve 10 to 15-year-old children with autism, and a group of 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls
Time Aware Knowledge Extraction for Microblog Summarization on Twitter
Microblogging services like Twitter and Facebook collect millions of user
generated content every moment about trending news, occurring events, and so
on. Nevertheless, it is really a nightmare to find information of interest
through the huge amount of available posts that are often noise and redundant.
In general, social media analytics services have caught increasing attention
from both side research and industry. Specifically, the dynamic context of
microblogging requires to manage not only meaning of information but also the
evolution of knowledge over the timeline. This work defines Time Aware
Knowledge Extraction (briefly TAKE) methodology that relies on temporal
extension of Fuzzy Formal Concept Analysis. In particular, a microblog
summarization algorithm has been defined filtering the concepts organized by
TAKE in a time-dependent hierarchy. The algorithm addresses topic-based
summarization on Twitter. Besides considering the timing of the concepts,
another distinguish feature of the proposed microblog summarization framework
is the possibility to have more or less detailed summary, according to the
user's needs, with good levels of quality and completeness as highlighted in

Automatisation of intonation modelling and its linguistic anchoring
This paper presents a fully machine-driven approach for intonation description and its linguistic interpretation. For this purpose,a new intonation model for bottom-up F0 contour analysis and synthesis is introduced, the CoPaSul model which is designed in the tradition of parametric, contour-based, and superpositional approaches. Intonation is represented by a superposition of global and local contour classes that are derived from F0 parameterisation. These classes were linguistically anchored with respect to information status by aligning them with a text which had been coarsely analysed for this purpose by means of NLP techniques. To test the adequacy of this data-driven interpretation a perception experiment was carried out, which confirmed 80% of the findings
Combining information seeking services into a meta supply chain of facts
The World Wide Web has become a vital supplier of information that allows organizations to carry on such tasks as business intelligence, security monitoring, and risk assessments. Having a quick and reliable supply of correct facts from perspective is often mission critical. By following design science guidelines, we have explored ways to recombine facts from multiple sources, each with possibly different levels of responsiveness and accuracy, into one robust supply chain. Inspired by prior research on keyword-based meta-search engines (e.g., metacrawler.com), we have adapted the existing question answering algorithms for the task of analysis and triangulation of facts. We present a first prototype for a meta approach to fact seeking. Our meta engine sends a user's question to several fact seeking services that are publicly available on the Web (e.g., ask.com, brainboost.com, answerbus.com, NSIR, etc.) and analyzes the returned results jointly to identify and present to the user those that are most likely to be factually correct. The results of our evaluation on the standard test sets widely used in prior research support the evidence for the following: 1) the value-added of the meta approach: its performance surpasses the performance of each supplier, 2) the importance of using fact seeking services as suppliers to the meta engine rather than keyword driven search portals, and 3) the resilience of the meta approach: eliminating a single service does not noticeably impact the overall performance. We show that these properties make the meta-approach a more reliable supplier of facts than any of the currently available stand-alone services
What Level of Quality can Neural Machine Translation Attain on Literary Text?
Given the rise of a new approach to MT, Neural MT (NMT), and its promising
performance on different text types, we assess the translation quality it can
attain on what is perceived to be the greatest challenge for MT: literary text.
Specifically, we target novels, arguably the most popular type of literary
text. We build a literary-adapted NMT system for the English-to-Catalan
translation direction and evaluate it against a system pertaining to the
previous dominant paradigm in MT: statistical phrase-based MT (PBSMT). To this
end, for the first time we train MT systems, both NMT and PBSMT, on large
amounts of literary text (over 100 million words) and evaluate them on a set of
twelve widely known novels spanning from the the 1920s to the present day.
According to the BLEU automatic evaluation metric, NMT is significantly better
than PBSMT (p < 0.01) on all the novels considered. Overall, NMT results in a
11% relative improvement (3 points absolute) over PBSMT. A complementary human
evaluation on three of the books shows that between 17% and 34% of the
translations, depending on the book, produced by NMT (versus 8% and 20% with
PBSMT) are perceived by native speakers of the target language to be of
