    Noncommutative lattices

    Get PDF
The extended study of non-commutative lattices was begun in 1949 by Ernst Pascual Jordan, a theoretical and mathematical physicist and co-worker of Max Born and Werner Karl Heisenberg. Jordan introduced noncommutative lattices as algebraic structures potentially suitable to encompass the logic of the quantum world. The modern theory of noncommutative lattices began 40 years later with Jonathan Leech\u27s 1989 paper "Skew lattices in rings." Recently, noncommutative generalizations of lattices and related structures have seen an upsurge in interest, with new ideas and applications emerging, from quasilattices to skew Heyting algebras. Much of this activity is derived in some way from the initiation, over thirty years ago, of Jonathan Leech\u27s program of research that studied noncommutative variations of lattices. The present book consists of seven chapters, mainly covering skew lattices, quasilattices and paralattices, skew lattices of idempotents in rings and skew Boolean algebras. As such, it is the first research monograph covering major results due to the renewed study of noncommutative lattices. It will serve as a valuable graduate textbook on the subject, as well as handy reference to researchers of noncommutative algebras

    On idempotent n-ary semigroups

This thesis, which consists of two parts, focuses on characterizations and descriptions of classes of idempotent n-ary semigroups where n >= 2 is an integer. Part I is devoted to the study of various classes of idempotent semigroups and their link with certain concepts stemming from social choice theory. In Part II, we provide constructive descriptions of various classes of idempotent n-ary semigroups. More precisely, after recalling and studying the concepts of single-peakedness and rectangular semigroups in Chapters 1 and 2, respectively, in Chapter 3 we provide characterizations of the classes of idempotent semigroups and totally ordered idempotent semigroups, in which the latter two concepts play a central role. Then in Chapter 4 we particularize the latter characterizations to the classes of quasitrivial semigroups and totally ordered quasitrivial semigroups. We then generalize these results to the class of quasitrivial n-ary semigroups in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is devoted to characterizations of several classes of idempotent n-ary semigroups satisfying quasitriviality on certain subsets of the domain. Finally, Chapter 7 focuses on characterizations of the class of symmetric idempotent n-ary semigroups. Throughout this thesis, we also provide several enumeration results which led to new integer sequences that are now recorded in The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). For instance, one of these enumeration results led to a new definition of the Catalan numbers

Bands with High Symmetry and Uniform Bands

In this dissertation we will be focused on determining classes of bands which are embeddable into some band with high symmetry. It is known that rectangular bands have high symmetry and every semilattice is embeddable into a semilattice with high symmetry. We will try to expand on these classes as much as possible. We first discuss properties of classes of semigroups in which every semigroup either has high symmetry or is embeddable into a semigroup with high symmetry. We show that normal bands are embeddable into normal bands with high symmetry and also that the bands, free in the class of all bands that can be embedded in some band with high symmetry, are precisely the free bands. In accordance with techniques in Pastijn (1980), we show an embedding of a normal band into a normal band with high symmetry that preserves much of the original structure. This allows us to look at an embedding of orthodox semigroups for which the band of idempotents is embeddable into a band with high symmetry. We finish the dissertation by showing the result that every band is embeddable into a uniform band. From this, it will then follow that every orthodox semigroup is embeddable into a bisimple orthodox semigroup
