    A novel formulation of the flexural overstrength factor for steel beams

    The ductile design of steel structures is directly influenced by the flexural behaviour of steel beams,which should be sufficient to allowplastic hinges to rotate until the collapsemechanismis completely developed. To guarantee the achievement of such a performance, the beam flexural overstrength must be quantified to appropriately apply capacity design principles. To this aim, analytical formulations to predict the flexural overstrength factor (s) of steel beams with a wide range of cross-section typologies (I and H sections, square and rectangular hollow sections) were developed based on gene expression programming (GEP). An experimental database was gathered from the available literature and processed to obtain the training and testing databases for the derivation of the closed-form solution through GEP. The independent variables used for the development of the prediction models were the geometric properties of the sections, the mechanical properties of the material, and the shear length of the steel beams. The predictions of the proposed GEP-based models were compared with the results obtained using the existing analytical equations proposed in the current literature. Comparative analysis revealed that the proposed formulation provides a more accurate prediction of beam overstrength

    Prediction of the cross-sectional capacity of cold-formed CHS using numerical modelling and machine learning

    The use of circular hollow sections (CHS) have seen a large increase in usage in recent years mainly because of the distinctive mechanical properties and unique aesthetic appearance. The focus of this paper is the behaviour of cold-rolled CHS beam-columns made from normal and high strength steel, aiming to propose a design formula for predicting the ultimate cross-sectional load carrying capacity, employing machine learning. A finite element model is developed and validated to conduct an extensive parametric study with a total of 3410 numerical models covering a wide range of the most influential parameters. The ANN model is then trained and validated using the data obtained from the developed numerical models as well as 13 test results compiled from various research available in the literature, and accordingly a new design formula is proposed. A comprehensive comparison with the design rules given in EC3 is presented to assess the performance of the ANN model. According to the results and analysis presented in this study, the proposed ANN-based design formula is shown to be an efficient and powerful design tool to predict the cross-sectional resistance of the CHS beam-columns with a high level of accuracy and the least computational costs

    Buckling resistance of hot‐finished CHS beam‐columns using FE modelling and machine learning

    The use of circular hollow sections (CHS) has increased in recent years owing to its excellent mechanical behaviour including axial compression and torsional resistance as well as its aesthetic appearance. They are popular in a wide range of structural members including beams, columns, trusses and arches. The behaviour of hot-finished CHS beam-columns made from normal and high strength steel is the main focus of this paper. A particular attention is given to predict the ultimate buckling resistance of CHS beam-columns using the recent advancement of the artificial neural network (ANN). FE models were established and validated to generate an extensive parametric study. The ANN model is trained and validated using a total of 3439 data points collected from the generated FE models and experimental tests available in the literature. A comprehensive comparative analysis with the design rules in Eurocode 3 is conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed ANN model. It is shown that the proposed ANN based design formula provides a reliable means for predicting the buckling resistance of the CHS beam-columns. This formula can be easily implemented in any programming software, providing an excellent basis for engineers and designers to predict the buckling resistance resistance of the CHS beam-columns with a straightforward procedure in an efficient and sustainable manner with least computational time

    Forecasting mechanical properties of steel structures through dynamic metaheuristic optimization for adaptive machine learning

    Machine learning (ML) presents a promising method for predicting mechanical properties in structural engineering, particularly within complex nonlinear structures under extreme conditions. Despite its potential, research has shown a disproportionate focus on concrete structures, leaving steel structures less explored. Furthermore, the prevalent combination of metaheuristic optimization (MO) and ML in existing studies is often subjective, pointing to a significant gap in identifying and leveraging more effective hybrid models. To bridge these gaps, this study introduces a novel system named the Multiple Metaheuristic Optimizers – Multiple Machine Learners (MMOMML) system, designed for predicting mechanical strength in steel structures. The MMOMML system amalgamates 17 MO algorithms with 15 ML techniques, generating 255 hybrid models, including numerous novel configurations not previously examined. With a user-friendly interface, MMOMML enables structural engineers to tackle inference challenges efficiently, regardless of their coding proficiency. This capability is convincingly demonstrated through two practical applications: steel beams’ shear strength and steel cellular beams’ elastic buckling. By offering a versatile and robust tool, the MMOMML system meets construction engineers’ and researchers’ practical and research needs, marking a significant advancement in the field

    Prediction of rutting potential of dense bituminous mixtures with polypropylene fibers via repeated creep testing by using neuro-fuzzy approach

    This study investigates the potential use of the neuro-fuzzy (NF) approach to model the rutting prediction by the aid of repeated creep testing results for polypropylene modified asphalt mixtures. Marshall specimens, fabricated with M-03 type polypropylene fibers at optimum bitumen content have been tested in order to predict their rutting potential under different load values and loading patterns at 50°C. Throughout the testing phase, it has been clearly shown that the addition of polypropylene fibers results in improved Marshall stabilities and decrease in the flow values, providing an eminent increase of the service life of samples under repeated creep testing. The performance of the accuracy of proposed neuro-fuzzy model is observed to be quite satisfactory. In addition, to obtain the main effects plot, a wide range of detailed two and three dimensional parametric studies have been performed

    Time Localization of Abrupt Changes in Cutting Process using Hilbert Huang Transform

    Cutting process is extremely dynamical process influenced by different phenomena such as chip formation, dynamical responses and condition of machining system elements. Different phenomena in cutting zone have signatures in different frequency bands in signal acquired during process monitoring. The time localization of signal’s frequency content is very important. An emerging technique for simultaneous analysis of the signal in time and frequency domain that can be used for time localization of frequency is Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT). It is based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of the signal into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) as simple oscillatory modes. IMFs obtained using EMD can be processed using Hilbert Transform and instantaneous frequency of the signal can be computed. This paper gives a methodology for time localization of cutting process stop during intermittent turning. Cutting process stop leads to abrupt changes in acquired signal correlated to certain frequency band. The frequency band related to abrupt changes is localized in time using HHT. The potentials and limitations of HHT application in machining process monitoring are shown

    Support vector machines in structural engineering: a review

    Recent development in data processing systems had directed study and research of engineering towards the creation of intelligent systems to evolve models for a wide range of engineering problems. In this respect, several modeling techniques have been created to simulate various civil engineering systems. This study aims to review the studies on support vector machines (SVM) in structural engineering and investigate the usability of this machine learning based approach by providing three case studies focusing on structural engineering problems. Firstly, the concept of SVM is explained and then, the recent studies on the application of SVM in structural engineering are summarized and discussed. Next, we performed three case studies using the experimental studies provided. Applicability of SVM in structural engineering is confirmed by these case studies. The results showed that SVM is superior to various other learning techniques considering the generalization capability of produced model
