    Performance-based control system design automation via evolutionary computing

    This paper develops an evolutionary algorithm (EA) based methodology for computer-aided control system design (CACSD) automation in both the time and frequency domains under performance satisfactions. The approach is automated by efficient evolution from plant step response data, bypassing the system identification or linearization stage as required by conventional designs. Intelligently guided by the evolutionary optimization, control engineers are able to obtain a near-optimal ‘‘off-thecomputer’’ controller by feeding the developed CACSD system with plant I/O data and customer specifications without the need of a differentiable performance index. A speedup of near-linear pipelineability is also observed for the EA parallelism implemented on a network of transputers of Parsytec SuperCluster. Validation results against linear and nonlinear physical plants are convincing, with good closed-loop performance and robustness in the presence of practical constraints and perturbations

    From Nonlinear Identification to Linear Parameter Varying Models: Benchmark Examples

    Linear parameter-varying (LPV) models form a powerful model class to analyze and control a (nonlinear) system of interest. Identifying a LPV model of a nonlinear system can be challenging due to the difficulty of selecting the scheduling variable(s) a priori, which is quite challenging in case a first principles based understanding of the system is unavailable. This paper presents a systematic LPV embedding approach starting from nonlinear fractional representation models. A nonlinear system is identified first using a nonlinear block-oriented linear fractional representation (LFR) model. This nonlinear LFR model class is embedded into the LPV model class by factorization of the static nonlinear block present in the model. As a result of the factorization a LPV-LFR or a LPV state-space model with an affine dependency results. This approach facilitates the selection of the scheduling variable from a data-driven perspective. Furthermore the estimation is not affected by measurement noise on the scheduling variables, which is often left untreated by LPV model identification methods. The proposed approach is illustrated on two well-established nonlinear modeling benchmark examples

    Identification and Optimal Linear Tracking Control of ODU Autonomous Surface Vehicle

    Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are being used for diverse applications of civilian and military importance such as: military reconnaissance, sea patrol, bathymetry, environmental monitoring, and oceanographic research. Currently, these unmanned tasks can accurately be accomplished by ASVs due to recent advancements in computing, sensing, and actuating systems. For this reason, researchers around the world have been taking interest in ASVs for the last decade. Due to the ever-changing surface of water and stochastic disturbances such as wind and tidal currents that greatly affect the path-following ability of ASVs, identification of an accurate model of inherently nonlinear and stochastic ASV system and then designing a viable control using that model for its planar motion is a challenging task. For planar motion control of ASV, the work done by researchers is mainly based on the theoretical modeling in which the nonlinear hydrodynamic terms are determined, while some work suggested the nonlinear control techniques and adhered to simulation results. Also, the majority of work is related to the mono- or twin-hull ASVs with a single rudder. The ODU-ASV used in present research is a twin-hull design having two DC trolling motors for path-following motion. A novel approach of time-domain open-loop observer Kalman filter identifications (OKID) and state-feedback optimal linear tracking control of ODU-ASV is presented, in which a linear state-space model of ODU-ASV is obtained from the measured input and output data. The accuracy of the identified model for ODU-ASV is confirmed by validation results of model output data reconstruction and benchmark residual analysis. Then, the OKID-identified model of the ODU-ASV is utilized to design the proposed controller for its planar motion such that a predefined cost function is minimized using state and control weighting matrices, which are determined by a multi-objective optimization genetic algorithm technique. The validation results of proposed controller using step inputs as well as sinusoidal and arc-like trajectories are presented to confirm the controller performance. Moreover, real-time water-trials were performed and their results confirm the validity of proposed controller in path-following motion of ODU-ASV

    Nonlinear self-tuning control for power oscillation damping

    Power systems exhibit nonlinear behavior especially during disturbances, necessitating the application of appropriate nonlinear control techniques. Lack of availability of accurate and updated models for the whole power system adds to the challenge. Conventional damping control design approaches consider a single operating condition of the system, which are obviously simple but tend to lack performance robustness. Objective of this research work is to design a measurement based self-tuning controller, which does not rely on accurate models and deals with nonlinearities in system response. Designed controller is required to ensure settling of inter-area oscillations within 10−12s, following disturbance such as a line outage. The neural network (NN) model is illustrated for the representation of nonlinear power systems. An optimization based algorithm, Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), for online estimation of power system dynamic behavior is proposed in batch mode to improve the model estimation. Careful study shows that the LM algorithm yields better closed loop performance, compared to conventional recursive least square (RLS) approach with the pole-shifting controller (PSC) in linear framework. Exploiting the capability of LM, a special form of neural network compatible with feedback linearization technique, is applied. Validation of the performance of proposed algorithm is done through the modeling and simulating heavy loading of transmission lines, when the nonlinearities are pronounced. Nonlinear NN model in the Feedback Linearization (FLNN) form gives better estimation than the autoregressive with an external input (ARX) form. The proposed identifier (FLNN with LM algorithm) is then tested on a 4−machine, 2−area power system in conjunction with the feedback linearization controller (FBLC) under varying operating conditions. This case study indicates that the developed closed loop strategy performs better than the linear NN with PSC. Extension of FLNN with FBLC structure in a multi-variable setup is also done. LM algorithm is successfully employed with the multi-input multi-output FLNN structure in a sliding window batch mode, and FBLC controller generates multiple control signals for FACTS. Case studies on a large scale 16−machine, 5−area power system are reported for different power flow scenarios, to prove the superiority of proposed schemes: both MIMO and MISO against a conventional model based controller.
