Rate Optimal design of a Wireless Backhaul Network using TV White Space
The penetration of wireless broadband services in remote areas has primarily
been limited due to the lack of economic incentives that service providers
encounter in sparsely populated areas. Besides, wireless backhaul links like
satellite and microwave are either expensive or require strict line of sight
communication making them unattractive. TV white space channels with their
desirable radio propagation characteristics can provide an excellent
alternative for engineering backhaul networks in areas that lack abundant
infrastructure. Specifically, TV white space channels can provide "free
wireless backhaul pipes" to transport aggregated traffic from broadband sources
to fiber access points. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of
multi-hop wireless backhaul in the available white space channels by using
noncontiguous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (NC-OFDMA)
transmissions between fixed backhaul towers. Specifically, we consider joint
power control, scheduling and routing strategies to maximize the minimum rate
across broadband towers in the network. Depending on the population density and
traffic demands of the location under consideration, we discuss the suitable
choice of cell size for the backhaul network. Using the example of available TV
white space channels in Wichita, Kansas (a small city located in central USA),
we provide illustrative numerical examples for designing such wireless backhaul
network

Sub 1GHz M2M communications standardization: The advancement in white space utilization for enhancing the energy efficiency
Energy efficiency of machine to machine (M2M) communications terminals is one of the major design goals of M2M networks, resulting from anticipated over 50 billion M2M communications devices to be deployed into the networks by 2020 [1]. The stakeholders in the M2M communications have observed that it will be environmental and economic catastrophic to deploy M2M communications devices without solving the energy inefficiencies associated with wireless devices that are expected to be used for M2M communications. In view of the aforementioned energy challenge, sub 1GHz spectra have provided enormous opportunities that can be energy efficient, cost effective and coverage efficiency which can be utilized for M2M communications. This work will evaluate the energy efficiency benefits of optimized Sub 1GHz spectra for M2M communications
HySIM: A Hybrid Spectrum and Information Market for TV White Space Networks
We propose a hybrid spectrum and information market for a database-assisted
TV white space network, where the geo-location database serves as both a
spectrum market platform and an information market platform. We study the
inter- actions among the database operator, the spectrum licensee, and
unlicensed users systematically, using a three-layer hierarchical model. In
Layer I, the database and the licensee negotiate the commission fee that the
licensee pays for using the spectrum market platform. In Layer II, the database
and the licensee compete for selling information or channels to unlicensed
users. In Layer III, unlicensed users determine whether they should buy the
exclusive usage right of licensed channels from the licensee, or the
information regarding unlicensed channels from the database. Analyzing such a
three-layer model is challenging due to the co-existence of both positive and
negative network externalities in the information market. We characterize how
the network externalities affect the equilibrium behaviours of all parties
involved. Our numerical results show that the proposed hybrid market can
improve the network profit up to 87%, compared with a pure information market.
Meanwhile, the achieved network profit is very close to the coordinated
benchmark solution (the gap is less than 4% in our simulation).Comment: This manuscript serves as the online technical report of the article
