A First Step Towards Automatically Building Network Representations

    Get PDF
To fully harness Grids, users or middlewares must have some knowledge on the topology of the platform interconnection network. As such knowledge is usually not available, one must uses tools which automatically build a topological network model through some measurements. In this article, we define a methodology to assess the quality of these network model building tools, and we apply this methodology to representatives of the main classes of model builders and to two new algorithms. We show that none of the main existing techniques build models that enable to accurately predict the running time of simple application kernels for actual platforms. However some of the new algorithms we propose give excellent results in a wide range of situations

Identifying Logical Homogeneous Clusters for Efficient Wide-area Communications

    Get PDF
Recently, many works focus on the implementation of collective communication operations adapted to wide area computational systems, like computational Grids or global-computing. Due to the inherently heterogeneity of such environments, most works separate "clusters" in different hierarchy levels. to better model the communication. However, in our opinion, such works do not give enough attention to the delimitation of such clusters, as they normally use the locality or the IP subnet from the machines to delimit a cluster without verifying the "homogeneity" of such clusters. In this paper, we describe a strategy to gather network information from different local-area networks and to construct "logical homogeneous clusters", better suited to the performance modelling.Comment: http://www.springerlink.com/index/TTJJL61R1EXDLCM

GMA Instrumentation of the Athena Framework using NetLogger

Grid applications are, by their nature, wide-area distributed applications. This WAN aspect of Grid applications makes the use of conventional monitoring and instrumentation tools (such as top, gprof, LSF Monitor, etc) impractical for verification that the application is running correctly and efficiently. To be effective, monitoring data must be "end-to-end", meaning that all components between the Grid application endpoints must be monitored. Instrumented applications can generate a large amount of monitoring data, so typically the instrumentation is off by default. For jobs running on a Grid, there needs to be a general mechanism to remotely activate the instrumentation in running jobs. The NetLogger Toolkit Activation Service provides this mechanism. To demonstrate this, we have instrumented the ATLAS Athena Framework with NetLogger to generate monitoring events. We then use a GMA-based activation service to control NetLogger's trigger mechanism. The NetLogger trigger mechanism allows one to easily start, stop, or change the logging level of a running program by modifying a trigger file. We present here details of the design of the NetLogger implementation of the GMA-based activation service and the instrumentation service for Athena. We also describe how this activation service allows us to non-intrusively collect and visualize the ATLAS Athena Framework monitoring data

The new services in nagios network bandwidth utility email notification and sms alert in improving the network performance

A new feature of services in Nagios has been added to the existing system which has no such services. The bandwidth monitoring and notification system are configured for alerting the network administrators when the bandwidth of the network in an organization hits a certain threshold settings. The system sent an email alert and sms notification to the network administrator for taking further action in order to maintain the Quality of Service (QoS) in the network. All the logs file of the Nagios actions is saved in the Nagios File Logs. The analysis was conducted from the case study and problem statements. Network Development Life Cycle (NDLC) was chosen as a methodology for implementing this system in the network. Nagios is installed inside Ubuntu 10 Operating System along with Multi-Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) and Mail Postfix. MRTG and Mail Postfix were configured to be integrated with the Nagios System. On the client side, NSClient++ has been installed, for monitoring the bandwidth and performance of windows based on operating system. The Nagios services have been improved with the implementation of sms and emails notifications since the existing services have no such utilities. With the implementation of these services to Nagios, the performance could be even better for the futur

An intelligent radio access network selection and optimisation system in heterogeneous communication environments

PhDThe overlapping of the different wireless network technologies creates heterogeneous communication environments. Future mobile communication system considers the technological and operational services of heterogeneous communication environments. Based on its packet switched core, the access to future mobile communication system will not be restricted to the mobile cellular networks but may be via other wireless or even wired technologies. Such universal access can enable service convergence, joint resource management, and adaptive quality of service. However, in order to realise the universal access, there are still many pending challenges to solve. One of them is the selection of the most appropriate radio access network. Previous work on the network selection has concentrated on serving the requesting user, but the existing users and the consumption of the network resources were not the main focus. Such network selection decision might only be able to benefit a limited number of users while the satisfaction levels of some users are compromised, and the network resources might be consumed in an ineffective way. Solutions are needed to handle the radio access network selection in a manner that both of the satisfaction levels of all users and the network resource consumption are considered. This thesis proposes an intelligent radio access network selection and optimisation system. The work in this thesis includes the proposal of an architecture for the radio access network selection and optimisation system and the creation of novel adaptive algorithms that are employed by the network selection system. The proposed algorithms solve the limitations of previous work and adaptively optimise network resource consumption and implement different policies to cope with different scenarios, network conditions, and aims of operators. Furthermore, this thesis also presents novel network resource availability evaluation models. The proposed models study the physical principles of the considered radio access network and avoid employing assumptions which are too stringent abstractions of real network scenarios. They enable the implementation of call level simulations for the comparison and evaluation of the performance of the network selection and optimisation algorithms

A framework for adaptive collective communications for heterogeneous hierarchical computing systems

Collective communication operations are widely used in MPI applications and play an important role in their performance. However, the network heterogeneity inherent to grid environments represent a great challenge to develop efïŹcient high performance computing applications. In this work we propose a generic framework based on communication models and adaptive techniques for dealing with collective communication patterns on grid platforms. Toward this goal, we address the hierarchical organization of the grid, selecting the most efïŹcient communication algorithms at each network level. Our framework is also adaptive to grid load dynamics since it considers transient network characteristics for dividing the nodes into clusters. Our experiments with the broadcast operation on a real-grid setup indicate that an adaptive framework allows signiïŹcant performance improvements on MPI collective communications

An Efficient Scheme for Aggregation and Presentation of Network Performance

    Get PDF
The Internet is presently being used to support increasingly complex interaction models as a result of more and more applications, services and frameworks becoming network centric. Efficient utilization of network and networked resources is of paramount importance. Network performance gathering is a precursor to any scheme that seeks to provide adaptive routing capabilities for interactions. In this paper we present a network performance aggregation framework that is extensible and appropriate for distributed messaging systems that span multiple realms, disparate communication protocols and support different applications
