Position and Orientation Based Formation Control of Multiple Rigid Bodies with Collision Avoidance and Connectivity Maintenance
This paper addresses the problem of position- and orientation-based formation
control of a class of second-order nonlinear multi-agent systems in a D
workspace with obstacles. More specifically, we design a decentralized control
protocol such that each agent achieves a predefined geometric formation with
its initial neighbors, while using local information based on a limited sensing
radius. The latter implies that the proposed scheme guarantees that the
initially connected agents remain always connected. In addition, by introducing
certain distance constraints, we guarantee inter-agent collision avoidance as
well as collision avoidance with the obstacles and the boundary of the
workspace. The proposed controllers employ a novel class of potential functions
and do not require a priori knowledge of the dynamical model, except for
gravity-related terms. Finally, simulation results verify the validity of the
proposed framework
Decentralized formation control with connectivity maintenance and collision avoidance under limited and intermittent sensing
A decentralized switched controller is developed for dynamic agents to
perform global formation configuration convergence while maintaining network
connectivity and avoiding collision within agents and between stationary
obstacles, using only local feedback under limited and intermittent sensing.
Due to the intermittent sensing, constant position feedback may not be
available for agents all the time. Intermittent sensing can also lead to a
disconnected network or collisions between agents. Using a navigation function
framework, a decentralized switched controller is developed to navigate the
agents to the desired positions while ensuring network maintenance and

Cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging
The implementation challenges of cooperative localization by dual
foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging are discussed and work on
the subject is reviewed. System architecture and sensor fusion are identified
as key challenges. A partially decentralized system architecture based on
step-wise inertial navigation and step-wise dead reckoning is presented. This
architecture is argued to reduce the computational cost and required
communication bandwidth by around two orders of magnitude while only giving
negligible information loss in comparison with a naive centralized
implementation. This makes a joint global state estimation feasible for up to a
platoon-sized group of agents. Furthermore, robust and low-cost sensor fusion
for the considered setup, based on state space transformation and
marginalization, is presented. The transformation and marginalization are used
to give the necessary flexibility for presented sampling based updates for the
inter-agent ranging and ranging free fusion of the two feet of an individual
agent. Finally, characteristics of the suggested implementation are
demonstrated with simulations and a real-time system implementation.Comment: 14 page
A Message Passing Strategy for Decentralized Connectivity Maintenance in Agent Removal
In a multi-agent system, agents coordinate to achieve global tasks through
local communications. Coordination usually requires sufficient information
flow, which is usually depicted by the connectivity of the communication
network. In a networked system, removal of some agents may cause a
disconnection. In order to maintain connectivity in agent removal, one can
design a robust network topology that tolerates a finite number of agent
losses, and/or develop a control strategy that recovers connectivity. This
paper proposes a decentralized control scheme based on a sequence of
replacements, each of which occurs between an agent and one of its immediate
neighbors. The replacements always end with an agent, whose relocation does not
cause a disconnection. We show that such an agent can be reached by a local
rule utilizing only some local information available in agents' immediate
neighborhoods. As such, the proposed message passing strategy guarantees the
connectivity maintenance in arbitrary agent removal. Furthermore, we
significantly improve the optimality of the proposed scheme by incorporating
-criticality (i.e. the criticality of an agent in its

Cooperative Localization under Limited Connectivity
We report two decentralized multi-agent cooperative localization algorithms
in which, to reduce the communication cost, inter-agent state estimate
correlations are not maintained but accounted for implicitly. In our first
algorithm, to guarantee filter consistency, we account for unknown inter-agent
correlations via an upper bound on the joint covariance matrix of the agents.
In the second method, we use an optimization framework to estimate the unknown
inter-agent cross-covariance matrix. In our algorithms, each agent localizes
itself in a global coordinate frame using a local filter driven by local dead
reckoning and occasional absolute measurement updates, and opportunistically
corrects its pose estimate whenever it can obtain relative measurements with
respect to other mobile agents. To process any relative measurement, only the
agent taken the measurement and the agent the measurement is taken from need to
communicate with each other. Consequently, our algorithms are decentralized
algorithms that do not impose restrictive network-wide connectivity condition.
Moreover, we make no assumptions about the type of agents or relative
measurements. We demonstrate our algorithms in simulation and a

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Multi-Micro Aerial Vehicle Robust Collision Avoidance
Multiple multirotor Micro Aerial Vehicles sharing the same airspace require a
reliable and robust collision avoidance technique. In this paper we address the
problem of multi-MAV reactive collision avoidance. A model-based controller is
employed to achieve simultaneously reference trajectory tracking and collision
avoidance. Moreover, we also account for the uncertainty of the state estimator
and the other agents position and velocity uncertainties to achieve a higher
degree of robustness. The proposed approach is decentralized, does not require
collision-free reference trajectory and accounts for the full MAV dynamics. We
