Seramai
325 orang pelajar Diploma in Construction Technology dari Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi
Service-oriented Context-aware Framework
Location- and context-aware services are emerging technologies in mobile and
desktop environments, however, most of them are difficult to use and do not
seem to be beneficial enough. Our research focuses on designing and creating a
service-oriented framework that helps location- and context-aware,
client-service type application development and use. Location information is
combined with other contexts such as the users' history, preferences and
disabilities. The framework also handles the spatial model of the environment
(e.g. map of a room or a building) as a context. The framework is built on a
semantic backend where the ontologies are represented using the OWL description
language. The use of ontologies enables the framework to run inference tasks
and to easily adapt to new context types. The framework contains a
compatibility layer for positioning devices, which hides the technical
differences of positioning technologies and enables the combination of location
data of various sources
Overcoming barriers and increasing independence: service robots for elderly and disabled people
This paper discusses the potential for service robots to overcome barriers and increase independence of
elderly and disabled people. It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly
people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new
applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses
the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and
users for which service robots are and are not suitable
Spatial context-aware person-following for a domestic robot
Domestic robots are in the focus of research in
terms of service providers in households and even as robotic
companion that share the living space with humans. A major
capability of mobile domestic robots that is joint exploration
of space. One challenge to deal with this task is how could we
let the robots move in space in reasonable, socially acceptable
ways so that it will support interaction and communication
as a part of the joint exploration. As a step towards this
challenge, we have developed a context-aware following behav-
ior considering these social aspects and applied these together
with a multi-modal person-tracking method to switch between
three basic following approaches, namely direction-following,
path-following and parallel-following. These are derived from
the observation of human-human following schemes and are
activated depending on the current spatial context (e.g. free
space) and the relative position of the interacting human.
A combination of the elementary behaviors is performed in
real time with our mobile robot in different environments.
First experimental results are provided to demonstrate the
practicability of the proposed approach
Professional librarianship: always preparing for the future
The Context Statement is Part One of my submission for my thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctorate in Professional Studies by Public Works. It is presented to be read in conjunction with Part Two of this submission, which contains publications which represent the public works. The Context Statement is written in line with the requirements of Middlesex University regulations for doctoral awards and the chapters are structured in relation to these requirements. The submitted works were not initially written for submission as part of a D. Prof.
The Context Statement has stimulated me to bring together a description of the reflective practice which has been inherent in the development of my public works, both those selected for special treatment in Chapter 2 and those described throughout the context statement. In chapter 1 I place my work in context, beginning with my interest in libraries which then became specialised in the library automation field. In section 2, as mentioned I introduce four public works which are in the case of the first three represented by publications. Chapter 3 is a justification for the Doctorate in Professional Studies by Public Works, outlining the place of reflection and reflective practices throughout the development of these public works. In Chapter 4 I return to the themes of International Librarianship, General Librarianship, Library Automation and Standardization which permeate my public works, before drawing my conclusions on the importance not only of reflection but of innovation in my public works
