    Real-time video-plus-depth content creation utilizing time-of-flight sensor - from capture to display

    Recent developments in 3D camera technologies, display technologies and other related fields have been aiming to provide 3D experience for home user and establish services such as Three-Dimensional Television (3DTV) and Free-Viewpoint Television (FTV). Emerging multiview autostereoscopic displays do not require any eyewear and can be watched by multiple users at the same time, thus are very attractive for home environment usage. To provide a natural 3D impression, autostereoscopic 3D displays have been design to synthesize multi-perspective virtual views of a scene using Depth-Image-Based Rendering (DIBR) techniques. One key issue of DIBR is that scene depth information in a form of a depth map is required in order to synthesize virtual views. Acquiring this information is quite complex and challenging task and still an active research topic. In this thesis, the problem of dynamic 3D video content creation of real-world visual scenes is addressed. The work assumed data acquisition setting including Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth sensor and a single conventional video camera. The main objective of the work is to develop efficient algorithms for the stages of synchronous data acquisition, color and ToF data fusion, and final view-plus-depth frame formatting and rendering. The outcome of this thesis is a prototype 3DTV system capable for rendering live 3D video on a 3D autostereoscopic display. The presented system makes extensive use of the processing capabilities of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in order to achieve real-time processing rates while providing an acceptable visual quality. Furthermore, the issue of arbitrary view synthesis is investigated in the context of DIBR and a novel approach based on depth layering is proposed. The proposed approach is applicable for general virtual views synthesis, i.e. in terms of different camera parameters such as position, orientation, focal length and varying sensors spatial resolutions. The experimental results demonstrate real-time capability of the proposed method even for CPU-based implementations. It compares favorably to other view synthesis methods in terms of visual quality, while being more computationally efficient

    Transformées basées graphes pour la compression de nouvelles modalités d’image

    Due to the large availability of new camera types capturing extra geometrical information, as well as the emergence of new image modalities such as light fields and omni-directional images, a huge amount of high dimensional data has to be stored and delivered. The ever growing streaming and storage requirements of these new image modalities require novel image coding tools that exploit the complex structure of those data. This thesis aims at exploring novel graph based approaches for adapting traditional image transform coding techniques to the emerging data types where the sampled information are lying on irregular structures. In a first contribution, novel local graph based transforms are designed for light field compact representations. By leveraging a careful design of local transform supports and a local basis functions optimization procedure, significant improvements in terms of energy compaction can be obtained. Nevertheless, the locality of the supports did not permit to exploit long term dependencies of the signal. This led to a second contribution where different sampling strategies are investigated. Coupled with novel prediction methods, they led to very prominent results for quasi-lossless compression of light fields. The third part of the thesis focuses on the definition of rate-distortion optimized sub-graphs for the coding of omni-directional content. If we move further and give more degree of freedom to the graphs we wish to use, we can learn or define a model (set of weights on the edges) that might not be entirely reliable for transform design. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to theoretically analyze the effect of the uncertainty on the efficiency of the graph transforms.En raison de la grande disponibilité de nouveaux types de caméras capturant des informations géométriques supplémentaires, ainsi que de l'émergence de nouvelles modalités d'image telles que les champs de lumière et les images omnidirectionnelles, il est nécessaire de stocker et de diffuser une quantité énorme de hautes dimensions. Les exigences croissantes en matière de streaming et de stockage de ces nouvelles modalités d’image nécessitent de nouveaux outils de codage d’images exploitant la structure complexe de ces données. Cette thèse a pour but d'explorer de nouvelles approches basées sur les graphes pour adapter les techniques de codage de transformées d'image aux types de données émergents où les informations échantillonnées reposent sur des structures irrégulières. Dans une première contribution, de nouvelles transformées basées sur des graphes locaux sont conçues pour des représentations compactes des champs de lumière. En tirant parti d’une conception minutieuse des supports de transformées locaux et d’une procédure d’optimisation locale des fonctions de base , il est possible d’améliorer considérablement le compaction d'énergie. Néanmoins, la localisation des supports ne permettait pas d'exploiter les dépendances à long terme du signal. Cela a conduit à une deuxième contribution où différentes stratégies d'échantillonnage sont étudiées. Couplés à de nouvelles méthodes de prédiction, ils ont conduit à des résultats très importants en ce qui concerne la compression quasi sans perte de champs de lumière statiques. La troisième partie de la thèse porte sur la définition de sous-graphes optimisés en distorsion de débit pour le codage de contenu omnidirectionnel. Si nous allons plus loin et donnons plus de liberté aux graphes que nous souhaitons utiliser, nous pouvons apprendre ou définir un modèle (ensemble de poids sur les arêtes) qui pourrait ne pas être entièrement fiable pour la conception de transformées. La dernière partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'analyse théorique de l'effet de l'incertitude sur l'efficacité des transformées basées graphes

    Wide-baseline object interpolation using shape prior regularization of epipolar plane images

    This paper considers the synthesis of intermediate views of an object captured by two calibrated and widely spaced cameras. Based only on those two very different views, our paper proposes to reconstruct the object Epipolar Plane Image Volume [1] (EPIV), which describes the object transformation when continuously moving the viewpoint of the synthetic view in-between the two reference cameras. This problem is clearly ill-posed since the occlusions and the foreshortening effect make the reference views significantly different when the cameras are far apart. Our main contribution consists in disambiguating this ill-posed problem by constraining the interpolated views to be consistent with an object shape prior. This prior is learnt based on images captured by the two reference views, and consists in a nonlinear shape manifold representing the plausible silhouettes of the object described by Elliptic Fourier Descriptors. Experiments on both synthetic and natural images show that the proposed method preserves the topological structure of objects during the intermediate view synthesis, while dealing effectively with the self-occluded regions and with the severe foreshortening effect associated to wide-baseline camera configurations

    Dense light field coding: a survey

    Light Field (LF) imaging is a promising solution for providing more immersive and closer to reality multimedia experiences to end-users with unprecedented creative freedom and flexibility for applications in different areas, such as virtual and augmented reality. Due to the recent technological advances in optics, sensor manufacturing and available transmission bandwidth, as well as the investment of many tech giants in this area, it is expected that soon many LF transmission systems will be available to both consumers and professionals. Recognizing this, novel standardization initiatives have recently emerged in both the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), triggering the discussion on the deployment of LF coding solutions to efficiently handle the massive amount of data involved in such systems. Since then, the topic of LF content coding has become a booming research area, attracting the attention of many researchers worldwide. In this context, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of the most relevant LF coding solutions proposed in the literature, focusing on angularly dense LFs. Special attention is placed on a thorough description of the different LF coding methods and on the main concepts related to this relevant area.     Creating photo-realistic images has been one of the major goals in computer graphics since its early days. Instead of modeling the complexity of nature with standard modeling tools, image-based approaches aim at exploiting real-world footage directly,as they are photo-realistic by definition. A drawback of these approaches has always been that the composition or combination of different sources is a non-trivial task, often resulting in annoying visible artifacts. In this thesis we focus on different techniques to diminish visible artifacts when combining multiple images in a common image domain. The results are either novel images, when dealing with the composition task of multiple images, or novel video sequences rendered in real-time, when dealing with video footage from multiple cameras.Fotorealismus ist seit jeher eines der großen Ziele in der Computergrafik. Anstatt die Komplexität der Natur mit standardisierten Modellierungswerkzeugen nachzubauen, gehen bildbasierte Ansätze den umgekehrten Weg und verwenden reale Bildaufnahmen zur Modellierung, da diese bereits per Definition fotorealistisch sind. Ein Nachteil dieser Variante ist jedoch, dass die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Quellbilder eine nichttriviale Aufgabe darstellt und häufig unangenehm auffallende Artefakte im erzeugten Bild nach sich zieht. In dieser Dissertation werden verschiedene Ansätze verfolgt, um Artefakte zu verhindern oder abzuschwächen, welche durch die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Bilder in einer gemeinsamen Bilddomäne entstehen. Im Ergebnis liefern die vorgestellten Verfahren neue Bilder oder neue Ansichten einer Bildsammlung oder Videosequenz, je nachdem, ob die jeweilige Aufgabe die Komposition mehrerer Bilder ist oder die Kombination mehrerer Videos verschiedener Kameras darstellt

    Depth-Assisted Semantic Segmentation, Image Enhancement and Parametric Modeling

    This dissertation addresses the problem of employing 3D depth information on solving a number of traditional challenging computer vision/graphics problems. Humans have the abilities of perceiving the depth information in 3D world, which enable humans to reconstruct layouts, recognize objects and understand the geometric space and semantic meanings of the visual world. Therefore it is significant to explore how the 3D depth information can be utilized by computer vision systems to mimic such abilities of humans. This dissertation aims at employing 3D depth information to solve vision/graphics problems in the following aspects: scene understanding, image enhancements and 3D reconstruction and modeling. In addressing scene understanding problem, we present a framework for semantic segmentation and object recognition on urban video sequence only using dense depth maps recovered from the video. Five view-independent 3D features that vary with object class are extracted from dense depth maps and used for segmenting and recognizing different object classes in street scene images. We demonstrate a scene parsing algorithm that uses only dense 3D depth information to outperform using sparse 3D or 2D appearance features. In addressing image enhancement problem, we present a framework to overcome the imperfections of personal photographs of tourist sites using the rich information provided by large-scale internet photo collections (IPCs). By augmenting personal 2D images with 3D information reconstructed from IPCs, we address a number of traditionally challenging image enhancement techniques and achieve high-quality results using simple and robust algorithms. In addressing 3D reconstruction and modeling problem, we focus on parametric modeling of flower petals, the most distinctive part of a plant. The complex structure, severe occlusions and wide variations make the reconstruction of their 3D models a challenging task. We overcome these challenges by combining data driven modeling techniques with domain knowledge from botany. Taking a 3D point cloud of an input flower scanned from a single view, each segmented petal is fitted with a scale-invariant morphable petal shape model, which is constructed from individually scanned 3D exemplar petals. Novel constraints based on botany studies are incorporated into the fitting process for realistically reconstructing occluded regions and maintaining correct 3D spatial relations. The main contribution of the dissertation is in the intelligent usage of 3D depth information on solving traditional challenging vision/graphics problems. By developing some advanced algorithms either automatically or with minimum user interaction, the goal of this dissertation is to demonstrate that computed 3D depth behind the multiple images contains rich information of the visual world and therefore can be intelligently utilized to recognize/ understand semantic meanings of scenes, efficiently enhance and augment single 2D images, and reconstruct high-quality 3D models

    Die Virtuelle Videokamera: ein System zur Blickpunktsynthese in beliebigen, dynamischen Szenen

    The Virtual Video Camera project strives to create free viewpoint video from casually captured multi-view data. Multiple video streams of a dynamic scene are captured with off-the-shelf camcorders, and the user can re-render the scene from novel perspectives. In this thesis the algorithmic core of the Virtual Video Camera is presented. This includes the algorithm for image correspondence estimation as well as the image-based renderer. Furthermore, its application in the context of an actual video production is showcased, and the rendering and image processing pipeline is extended to incorporate depth information.Das Virtual Video Camera Projekt dient der Erzeugung von Free Viewpoint Video Ansichten von Multi-View Aufnahmen: Material mehrerer Videoströme wird hierzu mit handelsüblichen Camcordern aufgezeichnet. Im Anschluss kann die Szene aus beliebigen, von den ursprünglichen Kameras nicht abgedeckten Blickwinkeln betrachtet werden. In dieser Dissertation wird der algorithmische Kern der Virtual Video Camera vorgestellt. Dies beinhaltet das Verfahren zur Bildkorrespondenzschätzung sowie den bildbasierten Renderer. Darüber hinaus wird die Anwendung im Kontext einer Videoproduktion beleuchtet. Dazu wird die bildbasierte Erzeugung neuer Blickpunkte um die Erzeugung und Einbindung von Tiefeninformationen erweitert

    Single View Modeling and View Synthesis

    This thesis develops new algorithms to produce 3D content from a single camera. Today, amateurs can use hand-held camcorders to capture and display the 3D world in 2D, using mature technologies. However, there is always a strong desire to record and re-explore the 3D world in 3D. To achieve this goal, current approaches usually make use of a camera array, which suffers from tedious setup and calibration processes, as well as lack of portability, limiting its application to lab experiments. In this thesis, I try to produce the 3D contents using a single camera, making it as simple as shooting pictures. It requires a new front end capturing device rather than a regular camcorder, as well as more sophisticated algorithms. First, in order to capture the highly detailed object surfaces, I designed and developed a depth camera based on a novel technique called light fall-off stereo (LFS). The LFS depth camera outputs color+depth image sequences and achieves 30 fps, which is necessary for capturing dynamic scenes. Based on the output color+depth images, I developed a new approach that builds 3D models of dynamic and deformable objects. While the camera can only capture part of a whole object at any instance, partial surfaces are assembled together to form a complete 3D model by a novel warping algorithm. Inspired by the success of single view 3D modeling, I extended my exploration into 2D-3D video conversion that does not utilize a depth camera. I developed a semi-automatic system that converts monocular videos into stereoscopic videos, via view synthesis. It combines motion analysis with user interaction, aiming to transfer as much depth inferring work from the user to the computer. I developed two new methods that analyze the optical flow in order to provide additional qualitative depth constraints. The automatically extracted depth information is presented in the user interface to assist with user labeling work. In this thesis, I developed new algorithms to produce 3D contents from a single camera. Depending on the input data, my algorithm can build high fidelity 3D models for dynamic and deformable objects if depth maps are provided. Otherwise, it can turn the video clips into stereoscopic video
