    Trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor UAV based on sliding mode active disturbance rejection control

    This paper proposes a sliding mode active disturbance rejection control scheme to deal with trajectory tracking control problems for the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Firstly, the differential signal of the reference trajectory can be obtained directly by using the tracking differentiator (TD), then the design processes of the controller can be simplified. Secondly, the estimated values of the UAV's velocities, angular velocities, total disturbance can be acquired by using extended state observer (ESO), and the total disturbance of the system can be compensated in the controller in real time, then the robustness and anti-interference capability of the system can be improved. Finally, the sliding mode controller based on TD and ESO is designed, the stability of the closed-loop system is proved by Lyapunov method. Simulation results show that the control scheme proposed in this paper can make the quadrotor track the desired trajectory quickly and accurately. &nbsp

    Backstepping-based Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control for a Quadrotor Manipulator with Tiltable Rotors

    Designing a robust controller is very important in the control of outdoor unmanned aerial vehicles. This paper presents the design procedures and implementation of super-twisting sliding mode controller, which is a robust nonlinear controller. The robust controller is applied to an over-actuated quadrotor manipulator with four tiltable rotors. A serial manipulator with two links is mounted on the bottom of the quadrotor. The quadrotor possesses the property of decoupling its position and orientation. The main contribute of this paper is that a super-twisting sliding mode controller in vector form is designed and applied to the control of an over-actuated quadrotor manipulator. Another contribution of this paper is that the stability of the closed-loop system is proved by utilizing the Lyapunov stability theory. It is confirmed that the performance of the super-twisting sliding mode controller is superior to that of the conventional backstepping controller in terms of convergence rate and accuracy by simulations

    Neural Network-based Finite-time Control of Nonlinear Systems with Unknown Dead-zones: Application to Quadrotors

    Over the years, researchers have addressed several control problems of various classes of nonlinear systems. This article considers a class of uncertain strict feedback nonlinear system with unknown external disturbances and asymmetric input dead-zone. Designing a tracking controller for such system is very complex and challenging. This article aims to design a finite-time adaptive neural network backstepping tracking control for the nonlinear system under consideration. In addition,  all unknown disturbances and nonlinear functions are lumped together and approximated by radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). Moreover, no prior  information about the boundedness of the dead-zone parameters is required in the controller design. With the aid of a Lyapunov candidate function, it has been shown that the tracking errors converge near the origin in finite-time. Simulation results testify that the proposed control approach can force the output to follow the reference trajectory in a short time despite the presence of  asymmetric input dead-zone and external disturbances. At last, in order to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed control method, it is applied to a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)

    Backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor with constrained actuator dynamics and complex unknowns

    In this paper, a backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control (BCTTC) scheme is addressed for trajectory tracking of a quadrotor with complex unknowns and cascade constraints arising from constrained actuator dynamics, including saturations and dead zones. The entire quadrotor system including actuator dynamics is decomposed into five cascade subsystems connected by intermediate saturated nonlinearities. By virtue of the cascade structure, backpropagating constraints (BCs) on intermediate signals are derived from constrained actuator dynamics suffering from nonreversible rotations and nonnegative squares of rotors, and decouple subsystems with saturated connections. Combining with sliding-mode errors, BC-based virtual controls are individually designed by addressing underactuation and cascade constraints. In order to remove smoothness requirements on intermediate controls, first-order filters are employed, and thereby contributing to backstepping-like subcontrollers synthesizing in a recursive manner. Moreover, universal adaptive compensators are exclusively devised to dominate intermediate tracking residuals and complex unknowns. Eventually, the closed-loop BCTTC system stability can be ensured by the Lyapunov synthesis, and trajectory tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small. Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed BCTTC scheme for a quadrotor with complex constrains and unknowns

    Robust hovering and trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor helicopter using acceleration feedback and a novel disturbance observer

    Hovering and trajectory tracking control of rotary-wing aircrafts in the presence of uncertainties and external disturbances is a very challenging task. This thesis focuses on the development of the robust hovering and trajectory tracking control algorithms for a quadrotor helicopter subject to both periodic and aperiodic disturbances along with noise and parametric uncertainties. A hierarchical control structure is employed where high-level position controllers produce reference attitude angles for the low-level attitude controllers. Reference attitude angles are usually determined analytically from the position command signals that control the positional dynamics. However, such analytical formulas may produce large and non-smooth reference angles which must be saturated and low-pass filtered. In this thesis, desired attitude angles are determined numerically using constrained nonlinear optimization where certain magnitude and rate constraints are imposed. Furthermore, an acceleration based disturbance observer (AbDOB) is designed to estimate and suppress disturbances acting on the positional dynamics of the quadrotor. For the attitude control, a nested position, velocity, and inner acceleration feedback control structure consisting of PID and PI type controllers are developed to provide high sti ness against external disturbances. Reliable angular acceleration is estimated through an extended Kalman filter (EKF) cascaded with a classical Kalman lter (KF). This thesis also proposes a novel disturbance observer which consists of a bank of band-pass filters connected parallel to the low-pass filter of a classical disturbance observer. Band-pass filters are centered at integer multiples of the fundamental frequency of the periodic disturbance. Number and bandwidth of the band-pass filters are two crucial parameters to be tuned in the implementation of the new structure. Proposed disturbance observer is integrated with a sliding mode controller to tackle the robust hovering and trajectory tracking control problem. The sensitivity of the proposed disturbance observer based control system to the number and bandwidth of the band-pass filters are thoroughly investigated via several simulations. Simulations are carried out on a high delity model where sensor biases and measurement noise are also considered. Results show that the proposed controllers are very effective in providing robust hovering and trajectory tracking performance when the quadrotor helicopter is subject to the wind gusts generated by the Dryden wind model along with plant uncertainties and measurement noise. A comparison with the classical disturbance observer-based control is also provided where better tracking performance with improved robustness is achieved in the presence of noise and external disturbance

    Control design for UAV quadrotors via embedded model control

    In this paper, a control system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is designed, tested in simulation by means of a high-fidelity simulator, and then applied to a real quadrotor UAV. A novel approach is proposed for the control design, based on the combination of two methodologies: feedback linearization (FL) and embedded model control (EMC). FL allows us to properly transform the UAV dynamics into a form suitable for EMC; EMC is then used to control the transformed system. A key feature of EMC is that it encompasses a so-called extended state observer (ESO), which not only recovers the system state but also gives a real-time estimate of all the disturbances/uncertainties affecting the system. This estimate is used by the FL-EMC control law to reject the aforementioned disturbances/uncertainties, including those collected via the FL, allowing a robustness and performance enhancement. This approach allows us to combine FL and EMC strengths. Most notably, the entire process is made systematic and application oriented. To set-up a reliable UAV attitude observer, an effective attitude sensors fusion is proposed and also benchmarked with an enhanced complementary filter. Finally, to enhance the closed-loop performance, a complete tuning procedure, encompassing frequency requirements, is outlined, based on suitably defined stability and performance metrics

    Nonlinear control and perturbation compensation in UAV quadrotor

    The great interest in the field of flying robotics encouraged a lot of research work to improve its control strategies. This thesis is about modelling and design of controllers and perturbation compensators for a UAV quadrotor. Four approaches are built in this purpose. The first approach is perturbation attenuation system in a UAV quadrotor. Hierarchical Perturbation Compensator (HPC) is built to compensate for system uncertainties, non-modelled dynamics and external disturbances. It comprises three subsystems designed to provide continuous and precise estimation of perturbation. Each subsystem is designed to avoid the drawbacks of the other. This approach has superior proficiency to decrease unknown perturbation either external or internal. The second approach is a Three Loop Uncertainties Compensator (TLUC), designed to estimate unknown time- varying uncertainties and perturbations to reduce their effects and in order to preserve stability. The novelty of this approach is that the TLUC can estimate and compensate for uncertainties and disturbances in three loops made to provide tracking to residual uncertainty in order to achieve a higher level of support to the controller. Exponential reaching law sliding mode controller is proposed and applied. It is integrated based on Lyapunov stability theory to obtain fast response with lowest possible chattering. The performance is verified through analyses, simulations and experiments. The third approach is Feedback Linearization based on Sliding Mode Control (FLSMC). The purpose is to provide nonlinear control that reduces the effect of the highly coupled dynamic behavior and the hard nonlinearity in the quadrotor. The proposed controller uses a Second Order sliding mode Exact Differentiator SOED to estimate the velocity and the acceleration. The fourth approach proposes an improved Non-Singular Terminal Super-Twisting Control for the problem of position and attitude tracking of quadrotor systems. The super-twisting algorithm is an effective control used to provide high precision and less chattering. The proposed method is based on a non-singular terminal sliding surface with new exponent that solves the problem of singularity in terminal sliding mode control. Design procedure and the stability analysis using Lyapunov theory are detailed for the considered approaches. The performance is verified through analyses, simulations and experiments
