Digital servo control of random sound test excitation
A digital servocontrol system for random noise excitation of a test object in a reverberant acoustic chamber employs a plurality of sensors spaced in the sound field to produce signals in separate channels which are decorrelated and averaged. The average signal is divided into a plurality of adjacent frequency bands cyclically sampled by a time division multiplex system, converted into digital form, and compared to a predetermined spectrum value stored in digital form. The results of the comparisons are used to control a time-shared up-down counter to develop gain control signals for the respective frequency bands in the spectrum of random sound energy picked up by the microphones

Emulating Digital Logic using Transputer Networks (Very High Parallelism = Simplicity = Performance)
Modern VLSI technology has changed the economic rules by which the balance between processing
power, memory and communications is decided in computing systems. This will have a profound
impact on the design rules for the controlling software. In particular, the criteria for judging efficiency
of the algorithms will be somewhat different. This paper explores some of these implications through
the development of highly parallel and highly distributable algorithms based on occam and transputer
networks. The major results reported are a new simplicity for software designs, a corresponding ability
to reason (formally and informally) about their properties, the reusability of their components and some
real performance figures which demonstrate their practicality. Some guidelines to assist in these designs
are also given. As a vehicle for discussion, an interactive simulator is developed for checking the
functional and timing characteristics of digital logic circuits of arbitrary complexity
Synthesis of Quantum Logic Circuits
We discuss efficient quantum logic circuits which perform two tasks: (i)
implementing generic quantum computations and (ii) initializing quantum
registers. In contrast to conventional computing, the latter task is nontrivial
because the state-space of an n-qubit register is not finite and contains
exponential superpositions of classical bit strings. Our proposed circuits are
asymptotically optimal for respective tasks and improve published results by at
least a factor of two.
The circuits for generic quantum computation constructed by our algorithms
are the most efficient known today in terms of the number of expensive gates
(quantum controlled-NOTs). They are based on an analogue of the Shannon
decomposition of Boolean functions and a new circuit block, quantum
multiplexor, that generalizes several known constructions. A theoretical lower
bound implies that our circuits cannot be improved by more than a factor of
two. We additionally show how to accommodate the severe architectural
limitation of using only nearest-neighbor gates that is representative of
current implementation technologies. This increases the number of gates by
almost an order of magnitude, but preserves the asymptotic optimality of gate
counts.Comment: 18 pages; v5 fixes minor bugs; v4 is a complete rewrite of v3, with
6x more content, a theory of quantum multiplexors and Quantum Shannon
Decomposition. A key result on generic circuit synthesis has been improved to

Two-lead multiplex system for sensor array applications
We present a multiplex system that creates the opportunity to use only two wires in sensor array applications, with arbitrary inter-sensor distances. The utility of this principle is shown by the realization of a CMOS prototype of this multiplexer
