    The Development and Distinction of Emerging School Professionals: Boundary Work of Guidance Counselors and School Psychologists

    As a compulsory part of our society, schools are a prominent institution in the United States and abroad. In a system with multiple domains of specialized professionals, it is important to define their roles, determine where there is overlap, and assess if both professions are functioning to best assist students. This study examines the boundary work and professionalization of two emerging mental health professions within the school system: guidance counselors and school psychologists. Thematic analysis of the boundary work in the editorials of each professions’ flagship journal show that much of the boundary work between the journals is similar and has not differed much over time and includes themes of professional structures, developmental psychology, and the altering of teachers and administrators. The only exception to this is both professions’ new, contemporary focus on social advocacy and community activism. Further research in this topic may explore boundary work between guidance counselors and school psychologists and teachers and administrators since these are the main boundaries being drawn within the two professions analyzed. Additionally, if social justice and community work continues to be a focus of these professions, further research will be required to understand how school psychologists and guidance counselors justify their entrance into this problem and how they carve out their piece of it

    (Consume)RED society: The rise of charitable consumption and its social implications

    We find ourselves living in a consumer society that seeks and creates meaning in the consumption of commodities, so much so that consumers are turning to consumerism as a form of expressing their political and social statements and activities. Over the past decade, and prominently in its latter half, a new social development of consumerism has emerged: the pairing of commodities with charities, or what I am terming charitable consumption. Using Foucauldian discursive analysis, I examine (Product)RED as a case study of charitable consumption to uncover how the contradictory concepts of charity and consumption are reconciled and equated within the discourse. I also analyze the role that celebrity personas play in the proliferation of this new meaning of individual consumption and the equation of consumption to an act of charity, social activism and social justice

    What Is the Relationship Between Conflict Management and Employee Empowerment? A Message Design Logic Perspective and its Importance for Managers and Supervisors

    This study focused on how conflict management between employees affects employee empowerment. Conflict naturally occurs between individuals, and its management in organizations can result in positive or negative consequences. Employee empowerment influences greater job satisfaction and commitment to organizations. Based on the theory of message design logic, it was hypothesized that employees who employ rhetorical design while managing conflict will experience greater levels of empowerment. The sample consisted of 196 employees at an educational institution who completed a short, online survey. Results showed no relationship between levels of perception of empowerment and message design logic, thus not supporting the hypothesis

    Web Rule Languages to Carry Policies

    Recent efforts in the area of Web policy languages show concerns on how to better represent both context and rules of a domain to deal with large number of resources and users. Interaction between domains with different business rules is also another questionable issue in this same area. Web rule languages have been recently introduced as a means to facilitate interaction between parties with dissimilar policies and business rules. Efforts have been placed to further review the possibility of the proposed solutions and extend them to work with other Web technologies. In this paper, we introduce REWERSE Rule Markup Language (R2ML) as a Web rule language that can be employed to make concepts, policies, and elements of a domain digestible by another domain through the use of vocabularies, rules, and annotations. We also show how R2ML elements can model the concepts and elements of different policy languages and assist systems with diverse policies with their interactions. 1

    Does job embeddedness predict turnover intentions in SMEs?

    Purpose: There is an absence of research examining job embeddedness in SMEs. Results of job embeddedness studies may not apply to SMEs, because the process of managing a SME differs from that of the large firm. The purpose of this paper is to examine relationships between on-the-job embeddedness, as well as each of its sub-dimensions, and turnover intentions; and group cohesion, on-the-job embeddedness and turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from 147 employees in SMEs located in Perth, Western Australia and 350 employees from SMEs operating in four business centres in South Africa. After invariance testing, data from the two countries were combined to increase statistical power of the analysis. Findings: On-the-job embeddedness and each sub-dimension were negatively related to turnover intentions. Group cohesion was positively related to composite on-the-job embeddedness. Findings suggest that while group cohesion on its own does not reduce turnover intentions, it does contribute to development of on-the-job embeddedness that, in turn, reduces turnover intentions. Research limitations/implications: Future research should control for the effects of external influences on turnover intentions. Findings imply that managerial actions related to antecedents of group cohesion could foster the on-the-job embeddedness of employees. Originality/value: This study is perhaps the first that tests the operation of on-the-job embeddedness in SMEs located in two countries. The conceptual arguments for links between each of the sub-dimensions of on-the-job embeddedness and turnover intentions are based on distinctive characteristics of SMEs and can serve as a theoretical foundation for future research on embeddedness in SMEs. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited
