Topology Optimization Applications on Engineering Structures

Over the years, several optimization techniques were widely used to find the optimum shape and size of engineering structures (trusses, frames, etc.) under different constraints (stress, displacement, buckling instability, kinematic stability, and natural frequency). But, most of them require continuous data set where, on the other hand, topology optimization (TO) can handle also discrete ones. Topology optimization has also allowed radical changes in geometry which concludes better designs. So, many researchers have studied on topology optimization by developing/using different methodologies. This study aims to classify these studies considering used methods and present new emerging application areas. It is believed that researchers will easily find the related studies with their work

Optimization of assembly line balancing with energy efficiency by using tiki-taka algorithm

Assembly line balancing (ALB) could be translated as the activity that is applied to optimize the layout of an assembly line by distributing a balance workload assembly among workstations. Based on the previous research conducted by researchers, most of the assembly line model studies focused extensively on the problem models that related to time, space, workers, and a few resources. However, there is a shortage of studies that considers the utilization of electrical energy in assembly line design. This situation stimulates this research to further investigate the Assembly Line Balancing with Energy Efficiency (ALB-EE). This research aimed to establish a computational model that represents the ALB-EE, propose a new Tiki-Taka Algorithm (TTA) to solve and optimize the ALB-EE and validate the developed model through a real-life case study. In the modeling phase, all the ALB-EE optimization objectives are presented in a mathematical form to earn line efficiency and energy utilization. Then, the TTA is developed before undergoing functionality tests by benchmarking with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Lastly, a study of the industrial case was performed as a validation of the developed model and algorithm. An automotive company is selected, and the collected actual data is used for validation purposes. As a result, the Optimized TTA performs best compared to PSO, GWO, GA, and WOA in most of the test problems. Meanwhile, the case study validation activity resulting an increase in line efficiency from 92.7% to 95.1% by task arrangement with the utilization of TTA. Through the improved line efficiency, the total energy consumed is also reduced to 3,305,478.46 J from the initial figure of 3,374,329.46 J. This is a clear indication that the developed TTA algorithm is reliable and could be used in optimizing a real-life problem by the resequence of the assembly task, thus reducing the cycle time and could reduce the total energy consumption by machiner

Jumlah unit produksi yang cukup banyak diakibatkan proses menunggu disaat penjemuran dan pendinginan adonan

An Optimization Method for the Remanufacturing Dynamic Facility Layout Problem with Uncertainties

    Get PDF
Remanufacturing is a practice of growing importance due to increasing environmental awareness and regulations. Facility layout design, as the cornerstone of effective facility planning, is concerned about resource localization for a well-coordinated workflow that leads to lower material handling costs and reduced lead times. However, due to stochastic returns of used products/components and their uncontrollable quality conditions, the remanufacturing process exhibits a high level of uncertainty challenging the facility layout design for remanufacturing. This paper undertakes this problem and presents an optimization method for remanufacturing dynamic facility layout with variable process capacities, unequal processing cells, and intercell material handling. A dynamic multirow layout model is presented for layout optimization and a modified simulated annealing heuristic is proposed toward the determination of optimal layout schemes. The approach is demonstrated through a machine tool remanufacturing system

Energy utilisation is one of the global trending issues. Various approaches have been introduced to minimise energy utilisation especially in the manufacturing sector, which is the largest consumer sector. One of the approaches includes the consideration of energy utilisation in the Assembly Line Balancing (ALB) optimisation. This paper reviews the ALB with energy consideration from 2012 to 2020. The selected articles were limited to problems solved using meta-heuristic algorithms. The review mainly focusses on the soft computing aspect such as problem variant, optimisation objectives, energy modelling and optimisation algorithm for ALB with energy consideration. Based on the review, the ALB with energy consideration was able to reduce energy utilisation up to 11.9%. It was found that the contribution in future ALB with energy research will be human-oriented, either social factor consideration in optimisation or energy utilisation modelling for workers. In addition, the effort to introduce an algorithm with efficient performance must be pursued because ALB problems have become more complicated. The findings from this review could assist future researchers to align their research direction with the observed trend. This paper also provides the research gap and research opportunities in the future

Climate mitigation, more stringent regulations, rising energy costs, and sustainable manufacturing are pushing researchers to focus on energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and implementation of renewable energy sources in manufacturing systems. This thesis aims to analyze the main works proposed regarding these hot topics, and to fill the gaps in the literature. First, a detailed literature review is proposed. Works regarding energy efficiency in different manufacturing levels, in the assembly line, energy saving policies, and the implementation of renewable energy sources are analyzed. Then, trying to fill the gaps in the literature, different topics are analyzed more in depth. In the single machine context, a mathematical model aiming to align the manufacturing power required to a renewable energy supply in order to obtain the maximum profit is developed. The model is applied to a single work center powered by the electric grid and by a photovoltaic system; afterwards, energy storage is also added to the power system. Analyzing the job shop context, switch off policies implementing workload approach and scheduling considering variable speed of the machines and power constraints are proposed. The direct and indirect workloads of the machines are considered to support the switch on/off decisions. A simulation model is developed to test the proposed policies compared to others presented in the literature. Regarding the job shop scheduling, a fixed and variable power constraints are considered, assuming the minimization of the makespan as the objective function. Studying the factory level, a mathematical model to design a flow line considering the possibility of using switch-off policies is developed. The design model for production lines includes a targeted imbalance among the workstations to allow for defined idle time. Finally, the main findings, results, and the future directions and challenges are presented

Considered by many authors as a technique for modelling stochastic, dynamic and discretely evolving systems, this technique has gained widespread acceptance among the practitioners who want to represent and improve complex systems. Since DES is a technique applied in incredibly different areas, this book reflects many different points of view about DES, thus, all authors describe how it is understood and applied within their context of work, providing an extensive understanding of what DES is. It can be said that the name of the book itself reflects the plurality that these points of view represent. The book embraces a number of topics covering theory, methods and applications to a wide range of sectors and problem areas that have been categorised into five groups. As well as the previously explained variety of points of view concerning DES, there is one additional thing to remark about this book: its richness when talking about actual data or actual data based analysis. When most academic areas are lacking application cases, roughly the half part of the chapters included in this book deal with actual problems or at least are based on actual data. Thus, the editor firmly believes that this book will be interesting for both beginners and practitioners in the area of DES
