    Social media streams contain large and diverse amount of information, ranging from daily-life stories to the latest global and local events and news. Twitter, especially, allows a fast spread of events happening real time, and enables individuals and organizations to stay informed of the events happening now. Event detection from social media data poses different challenges from traditional text and is a research area that has attracted much attention in recent years.     Truth Discovery in Big Data Social Media Application

    In this system first one is “misinformation spread” where a significant number of sources are contributing to false claims, making the identification of truthful claims difficult. For example, on, Instagram, rumors, Twitter scams, and influence bots are common examples of sources colluding, either intentionally or unintentionally, to spread misinformation and obscure the truth. The challenge is “data sparsity” or the “long-tail phenomenon” where a majority of sources only contribute a small number of claims, providing insufficient evidence to determine those sources’ trustworthiness. For example, in the Twitter datasets that we collected during real-world events, more than 90only contributed to a single claim. Third, many current solutions are not scalable to large-scale social sensing events because of the centralized nature of their truth discovery algorithms. We are going develop a Scalable and Robust Truth Discovery (SRTD) scheme to address the above all challenges.     Leveraging Social Media and Web of Data for Crisis Response Coordination

    There is an ever increasing number of users in social media (1B+ Facebook users, 500M+ Twitter users) and ubiquitous mobile access (6B+ mobile phone subscribers) who share their observations and opinions. In addition, the Web of Data and existing knowledge bases keep on growing at a rapid pace. In this scenario, we have unprecedented opportunities to improve crisis response by extracting social signals, creating spatio-temporal mappings, performing analytics on social and Web of Data, and supporting a variety of applications. Such applications can help provide situational awareness during an emergency, improve preparedness, and assist during the rebuilding/recovery phase of a disaster. Data mining can provide valuable insights to support emergency responders and other stakeholders during crisis. However, there are a number of challenges and existing computing technology may not work in all cases. Therefore, our objective here is to present the characterization of such data mining tasks, and challenges that need further research attention

    ON RELEVANCE FILTERING FOR REAL-TIME TWEET SUMMARIZATION

    Real-time tweet summarization systems (RTS) require mechanisms for capturing relevant tweets, identifying novel tweets, and capturing timely tweets. In this thesis, we tackle the RTS problem with a main focus on the relevance filtering. We experimented with different traditional retrieval models. Additionally, we propose two extensions to alleviate the sparsity and topic drift challenges that affect the relevance filtering. For the sparsity, we propose leveraging word embeddings in Vector Space model (VSM) term weighting to empower the system to use semantic similarity alongside the lexical matching. To mitigate the effect of topic drift, we exploit explicit relevance feedback to enhance profile representation to cope with its development in the stream over time. We conducted extensive experiments over three standard English TREC test collections that were built specifically for RTS. Although the extensions do not generally exhibit better performance, they are comparable to the baselines used. Moreover, we extended an event detection Arabic tweets test collection, called EveTAR, to support tasks that require novelty in the system's output. We collected novelty judgments using in-house annotators and used the collection to test our RTS system.     Mining Social Media for Newsgathering: A Review

    Social media is becoming an increasingly important data source for learning about breaking news and for following the latest developments of ongoing news. This is in part possible thanks to the existence of mobile devices, which allows anyone with access to the Internet to post updates from anywhere, leading in turn to a growing presence of citizen journalism. Consequently, social media has become a go-to resource for journalists during the process of newsgathering. Use of social media for newsgathering is however challenging, and suitable tools are needed in order to facilitate access to useful information for reporting. In this paper, we provide an overview of research in data mining and natural language processing for mining social media for newsgathering. We discuss five different areas that researchers have worked on to mitigate the challenges inherent to social media newsgathering: news discovery, curation of news, validation and verification of content, newsgathering dashboards, and other tasks. We outline the progress made so far in the field, summarise the current challenges as well as discuss future directions in the use of computational journalism to assist with social media newsgathering.     Rethinking summarization and storytelling for modern social multimedia

    Traditional summarization initiatives have been focused on specific types of documents such as articles, reviews, videos, image feeds, or tweets, a practice which may result in pigeonholing the summarization task in the context of modern, content-rich multimedia collections. Consequently, much of the research to date has revolved around mostly toy problems in narrow domains and working on single-source media types. We argue that summarization and story generation systems need to re-focus the problem space in order to meet the information needs in the age of user-generated content in different formats and languages. Here we create a framework for flexible multimedia storytelling.
