    Visibility Constrained Generative Model for Depth-based 3D Facial Pose Tracking

    In this paper, we propose a generative framework that unifies depth-based 3D facial pose tracking and face model adaptation on-the-fly, in the unconstrained scenarios with heavy occlusions and arbitrary facial expression variations. Specifically, we introduce a statistical 3D morphable model that flexibly describes the distribution of points on the surface of the face model, with an efficient switchable online adaptation that gradually captures the identity of the tracked subject and rapidly constructs a suitable face model when the subject changes. Moreover, unlike prior art that employed ICP-based facial pose estimation, to improve robustness to occlusions, we propose a ray visibility constraint that regularizes the pose based on the face model's visibility with respect to the input point cloud. Ablation studies and experimental results on Biwi and ICT-3DHP datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework is effective and outperforms completing state-of-the-art depth-based methods

    A Detailed Study of the Association Task in Tracking-by-Detection-based Multi-Person Tracking

    Many multi-person trackers follow the tracking-by-detection paradigm applying a person detector in each frame and linking detections of the same target to form tracks in the association task. While the basic concept is the same among these methods, various motion models, distance metrics to measure the similarity of targets, and matching strategies are used. This makes it difficult to compare different methods and also to assess the influence of single tracking components on the final performance. For these reasons, all parts of the association task are thoroughly investigated in this study. Starting with a simple baseline which is consequently improved with the help of experimental results, a strong tracking-by-detection-based framework is developed that achieves state-of-the-art performance on two multi-person tracking benchmarks

    Advancing Operating Systems via Aspect-Oriented Programming

    Operating system kernels are among the most complex pieces of software in existence to- day. Maintaining the kernel code and developing new functionality is increasingly compli- cated, since the amount of required features has risen significantly, leading to side ef fects that can be introduced inadvertedly by changing a piece of code that belongs to a completely dif ferent context. Software developers try to modularize their code base into separate functional units. Some of the functionality or “concerns” required in a kernel, however, does not fit into the given modularization structure; this code may then be spread over the code base and its implementation tangled with code implementing dif ferent concerns. These so-called “crosscutting concerns” are especially dif ficult to handle since a change in a crosscutting concern implies that all relevant locations spread throughout the code base have to be modified. Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) is an approach to handle crosscutting concerns by factoring them out into separate modules. The “advice” code contained in these modules is woven into the original code base according to a pointcut description, a set of interaction points (joinpoints) with the code base. To be used in operating systems, AOSD requires tool support for the prevalent procedu- ral programming style as well as support for weaving aspects. Many interactions in kernel code are dynamic, so in order to implement non-static behavior and improve performance, a dynamic weaver that deploys and undeploys aspects at system runtime is required. This thesis presents an extension of the “C” programming language to support AOSD. Based on this, two dynamic weaving toolkits – TOSKANA and TOSKANA-VM – are presented to permit dynamic aspect weaving in the monolithic NetBSD kernel as well as in a virtual- machine and microkernel-based Linux kernel running on top of L4. Based on TOSKANA, applications for this dynamic aspect technology are discussed and evaluated. The thesis closes with a view on an aspect-oriented kernel structure that maintains coherency and handles crosscutting concerns using dynamic aspects while enhancing de- velopment methods through the use of domain-specific programming languages

Multimedia information may include discrete media data, such as text, data, and images, and continuous media data, such as video and audio. Such a system enhances human communications by exploiting both visual and aural senses and provides the ultimate flexibility in work and entertainment, allowing one to collaborate with remote participants, view movies on demand, access on-line digital libraries from the desktop, and so forth. In this paper, we present a technical survey of a DMS.     Accelerated Object Tracking with Local Binary Features

    Multi-object tracking is a problem with wide application in modern computing. Object tracking is leveraged in areas such as human computer interaction, autonomous vehicle navigation, panorama generation, as well as countless other robotic applications. Several trackers have demonstrated favorable results for tracking of single objects. However, modern object trackers must make significant tradeoffs in order to accommodate multiple objects while maintaining real-time performance. These tradeoffs include sacrifices in robustness and accuracy that adversely affect the results. This thesis details the design and multiple implementations of an object tracker that is focused on computational efficiency. The computational efficiency of the tracker is achieved through use of local binary descriptors in a template matching approach. Candidate templates are matched to a dictionary composed of both static and dynamic templates to allow for variation in the appearance of the object while minimizing the potential for drift in the tracker. Locality constraints have been used to reduce tracking jitter. Due to the significant promise for parallelization, the tracking algorithm was implemented on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) using the CUDA API. The tracker\u27s efficiency also led to its implantation on a mobile platform as one of the mobile trackers that can accurately track at faster than realtime speed. Benchmarks were performed to compare the proposed tracker to state of the art trackers on a wide range of standard test videos. The tracker implemented in this work has demonstrated a higher degree of accuracy while operating several orders of magnitude faster
