    Fusing Censored Dependent Data for Distributed Detection

    In this paper, we consider a distributed detection problem for a censoring sensor network where each sensor's communication rate is significantly reduced by transmitting only "informative" observations to the Fusion Center (FC), and censoring those deemed "uninformative". While the independence of data from censoring sensors is often assumed in previous research, we explore spatial dependence among observations. Our focus is on designing the fusion rule under the Neyman-Pearson (NP) framework that takes into account the spatial dependence among observations. Two transmission scenarios are considered, one where uncensored observations are transmitted directly to the FC and second where they are first quantized and then transmitted to further improve transmission efficiency. Copula-based Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) for censored data is proposed with both continuous and discrete messages received at the FC corresponding to different transmission strategies. We address the computational issues of the copula-based GLRTs involving multidimensional integrals by presenting more efficient fusion rules, based on the key idea of injecting controlled noise at the FC before fusion. Although, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is reduced by introducing controlled noise at the receiver, simulation results demonstrate that the resulting noise-aided fusion approach based on adding artificial noise performs very closely to the exact copula-based GLRTs. Copula-based GLRTs and their noise-aided counterparts by exploiting the spatial dependence greatly improve detection performance compared with the fusion rule under independence assumption

    Fusing Dependent Decisions for Hypothesis Testing with Heterogeneous Sensors

    In this paper, we consider a binary decentralized detection problem where the local sensor observations are quantized before their transmission to the fusion center. Sensor observations, and hence their quantized versions, may be heterogeneous as well as statistically dependent. A composite binary hypothesis testing problem is formulated, and a copula-based generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) based fusion rule is derived given that the local sensors are uniform multi-level quantizers. An alternative computationally efficient fusion rule is also designed which involves injecting a deliberate random disturbance to the local sensor decisions before fusion. Although the introduction of external noise causes a reduction in the received signal to noise ratio, it is shown that the proposed approach can result in a detection performance comparable to the GLRT detector without external noise, especially when the number of quantization levels is larg

    Adaptive-Compression Based Congestion Control Technique for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Congestion in a wireless sensor network causes an increase in the amount of data loss and delays in data transmission. In this paper, we propose a new congestion control technique (ACT, Adaptive Compression-based congestion control Technique) based on an adaptive compression scheme for packet reduction in case of congestion. The compression techniques used in the ACT are Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM), and Run-Length Coding (RLC). The ACT first transforms the data from the time domain to the frequency domain, reduces the range of data by using ADPCM, and then reduces the number of packets with the help of RLC before transferring the data to the source node. It introduces the DWT for priority-based congestion control because the DWT classifies the data into four groups with different frequencies. The ACT assigns priorities to these data groups in an inverse proportion to the respective frequencies of the data groups and defines the quantization step size of ADPCM in an inverse proportion to the priorities. RLC generates a smaller number of packets for a data group with a low priority. In the relaying node, the ACT reduces the amount of packets by increasing the quantization step size of ADPCM in case of congestion. Moreover, in order to facilitate the back pressure, the queue is controlled adaptively according to the congestion state. We experimentally demonstrate that the ACT increases the network efficiency and guarantees fairness to sensor nodes, as compared with the existing methods.     Heterogeneous Sensor Signal Processing for Inference with Nonlinear Dependence

    Inferring events of interest by fusing data from multiple heterogeneous sources has been an interesting and important topic in recent years. Several issues related to inference using heterogeneous data with complex and nonlinear dependence are investigated in this dissertation. We apply copula theory to characterize the dependence among heterogeneous data. In centralized detection, where sensor observations are available at the fusion center (FC), we study copula-based fusion. We design detection algorithms based on sample-wise copula selection and mixture of copulas model in different scenarios of the true dependence. The proposed approaches are theoretically justified and perform well when applied to fuse acoustic and seismic sensor data for personnel detection. Besides traditional sensors, the access to the massive amount of social media data provides a unique opportunity for extracting information about unfolding events. We further study how sensor networks and social media complement each other in facilitating the data-to-decision making process. We propose a copula-based joint characterization of multiple dependent time series from sensors and social media. As a proof-of-concept, this model is applied to the fusion of Google Trends (GT) data and stock/flu data for prediction, where the stock/flu data serves as a surrogate for sensor data. In energy constrained networks, local observations are compressed before they are transmitted to the FC. In these cases, conditional dependence and heterogeneity complicate the system design particularly. We consider the classification of discrete random signals in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where, for communication efficiency, only local decisions are transmitted. We derive the necessary conditions for the optimal decision rules at the sensors and the FC by introducing a hidden random variable. An iterative algorithm is designed to search for the optimal decision rules. Its convergence and asymptotical optimality are also proved. The performance of the proposed scheme is illustrated for the distributed Automatic Modulation Classification (AMC) problem. Censoring is another communication efficient strategy, in which sensors transmit only informative observations to the FC, and censor those deemed uninformative . We design the detectors that take into account the spatial dependence among observations. Fusion rules for censored data are proposed with continuous and discrete local messages, respectively. Their computationally efficient counterparts based on the key idea of injecting controlled noise at the FC before fusion are also investigated. In this thesis, with heterogeneous and dependent sensor observations, we consider not only inference in parallel frameworks but also the problem of collaborative inference where collaboration exists among local sensors. Each sensor forms coalition with other sensors and shares information within the coalition, to maximize its inference performance. The collaboration strategy is investigated under a communication constraint. To characterize the influence of inter-sensor dependence on inference performance and thus collaboration strategy, we quantify the gain and loss in forming a coalition by introducing the copula-based definitions of diversity gain and redundancy loss for both estimation and detection problems. A coalition formation game is proposed for the distributed inference problem, through which the information contained in the inter-sensor dependence is fully explored and utilized for improved inference performance

    Distributed detection and estimation in wireless sensor networks: resource allocation, fusion rules, and network security

    This thesis addresses the problem of detection of an unknown binary event. In particular, we consider centralized detection, distributed detection, and network security in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The communication links among SNs are subject to limited SN transmit power, limited bandwidth (BW), and are modeled as orthogonal channels with path loss, flat fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We propose algorithms for resource allocations, fusion rules, and network security. In the first part of this thesis, we consider the centralized detection and calculate the optimal transmit power allocation and the optimal number of quantization bits for each SN. The resource allocation is performed at the fusion center (FC) and it is referred as a centralized approach. We also propose a novel fully distributeddistributed algorithm to address this resource allocation problem. What makes this scheme attractive is that the SNs share with their neighbors just their individual transmit power at the current states. Finally, the optimal soft fusion rule at the FC is derived. But as this rule requires a-priori knowledge that is difficult to attain in practice, suboptimal fusion rules are proposed that are realizable in practice. The second part considers a fully distributed detection framework and we propose a two-step distributed quantized fusion rule algorithm where in the first step the SNs collaborate with their neighbors through error-free, orthogonal channels. In the second step, local 1-bit decisions generated in the first step are shared among neighbors to yield a consensus. A binary hypothesis testing is performed at any arbitrary SN to optimally declare the global decision. Simulations show that our proposed quantized two-step distributed detection algorithm approaches the performance of the unquantized centralized (with a FC) detector and its power consumption is shown to be 50% less than the existing (unquantized) conventional algorithm. Finally, we analyze the detection performance of under-attack WSNs and derive attacking and defense strategies from both the Attacker and the FC perspective. We re-cast the problem as a minimax game between the FC and Attacker and show that the Nash Equilibrium (NE) exists. We also propose a new non-complex and efficient reputation-based scheme to identify these compromised SNs. Based on this reputation metric, we propose a novel FC weight computation strategy ensuring that the weights for the identified compromised SNs are likely to be decreased. In this way, the FC decides how much a SN should contribute to its final decision. We show that this strategy outperforms the existing schemes

    dissertationCross layer system design represents a paradigm shift that breaks the traditional layer-boundaries in a network stack to enhance a wireless network in a number of di erent ways. Existing work has used the cross layer approach to optimize a wireless network in terms of packet scheduling, error correction, multimedia quality, power consumption, selection of modulation/coding and user experience, etc. We explore the use of new cross layer opportunities to achieve secrecy and e ciency of data transmission in wireless networks. In the rst part of this dissertation, we build secret key establishment methods for private communication between wireless devices using the spatio-temporal variations of symmetric-wireless channel measurements. We evaluate our methods on a variety of wireless devices, including laptops, telosB sensor nodes, and Android smartphones, with diverse wireless capabilities. We perform extensive measurements in real-world environments and show that our methods generate high entropy secret bits at a signi cantly faster rate in comparison to existing approaches. While the rst part of this dissertation focuses on achieving secrecy in wireless networks, the second part of this dissertation examines the use of special pulse shaping lters of the lterbank multicarrier (FBMC) physical layer in reliably transmitting data packets at a very high rate. We rst analyze the mutual interference power across subcarriers used by di erent transmitters. Next, to understand the impact of FBMC beyond the physical layer, we devise a distributed and adaptive medium access control protocol that coordinates data packet tra c among the di erent nodes in the network in a best e ort manner. Using extensive simulations, we show that FBMC consistently achieves an order-of-magnitude performance improvement over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in several aspects, including packet transmission delays, channel access delays, and e ective data transmission rate available to each node in static indoor settings as well as in vehicular networks

    Distributed navigation of multi-robot systems for sensing coverage

    A team of coordinating mobile robots equipped with operation specific sensors can perform different coverage tasks. If the required number of robots in the team is very large then a centralized control system becomes a complex strategy. There are also some areas where centralized communication turns into an issue. So, a team of mobile robots for coverage tasks should have the ability of decentralized or distributed decision making. This thesis investigates decentralized control of mobile robots specifically for coverage problems. A decentralized control strategy is ideally based on local information and it can offer flexibility in case there is an increment or decrement in the number of mobile robots. We perform a broad survey of the existing literature for coverage control problems. There are different approaches associated with decentralized control strategy for coverage control problems. We perform a comparative review of these approaches and use the approach based on simple local coordination rules. These locally computed nearest neighbour rules are used to develop decentralized control algorithms for coverage control problems. We investigate this extensively used nearest neighbour rule-based approach for developing coverage control algorithms. In this approach, a mobile robot gives an equal importance to every neighbour robot coming under its communication range. We develop our control approach by making some of the mobile robots playing a more influential role than other members of the team. We develop the control algorithm based on nearest neighbour rules with weighted average functions. The approach based on this control strategy becomes efficient in terms of achieving a consensus on control inputs, say heading angle, velocity, etc. The decentralized control of mobile robots can also exhibit a cyclic behaviour under some physical constraints like a quantized orientation of the mobile robot. We further investigate the cyclic behaviour appearing due to the quantized control of mobile robots under some conditions. Our nearest neighbour rule-based approach offers a biased strategy in case of cyclic behaviour appearing in the team of mobile robots. We consider a clustering technique inside the team of mobile robots. Our decentralized control strategy calculates the similarity measure among the neighbours of a mobile robot. The team of mobile robots with the similarity measure based approach becomes efficient in achieving a fast consensus like on heading angle or velocity. We perform a rigorous mathematical analysis of our developed approach. We also develop a condition based on relaxed criteria for achieving consensus on velocity or heading angle of the mobile robots.
