    Multidisciplinarity vs. Multivocality, the case of "Learning Analytics"

    Session : Reflections on learning analyticsInternational audienceIn this paper, we consider an analysis of the TeLearn archive, of the Grand Challenges from the STELLAR Network of Excellence, of two Alpine Rendez-Vous 2011 workshops and research conducted in the Productive Multivocality initiative in order to discuss the notions of multidisciplinarity, multivocality and interidisciplinarity. We use this discussion as a springboard for addressing the term "Learning Analytics" and its relation to "Educational Data Mining". Our goal is to launch a debate pertaining to what extent the different disciplines involved in the TEL community can be integrated on methodological and theoretical levels

    Analytics of time management strategies in online learning environments: a novel methodological approach

    The emergence of technology-supported education, e.g., blended and online, has changed the global higher education landscape. Importantly, the new learning modes involve more complex tasks and challenging ways of learning that require effective time management and strong self-regulation skills. In this regard, one of the most prevalent theoretical lenses to understand learning processes is Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). In reference to SRL models, time is a major resource in learning. The way learners schedule, plan, and enact tactics and strategies on their learning time could tremendously impact their academic achievement. However, the assessment of how learners make time-related decisions in learning is a daunting task, particularly given its latent nature and inherent autonomous learning capacity. One way to address this problem is to make use of unprecedented volumes of data collected by digital learning environments that are precisely timestamped records of actions that learners take while studying. This thesis presents a set of novel learning analytics methods for detecting and understanding time management strategies based on the analysis of digital trace data collected in online learning environments. First, the thesis proposes a new method to detect time management tactics and strategies using a combination of sequence mining and clustering techniques. The thesis also describes how time management tactics and strategies detected with this method are aligned with an SRL model that is used as a theoretical foundation of this thesis. Second, the thesis introduces a novel learning analytics method for the detection of time management tactics and strategies. This method uses a combination of process mining and clustering techniques followed by a complementary process mining technique that has a unique feature to bring insights into the temporal learning processes. This new method also has a strong potential to inform and enhance understanding of how learners make complex decisions about their learning. Third, the thesis investigates mutual connections between time management and learning strategies and their combined connections with academic performance using epistemic network analysis. This analysis provides empirical evidence that supports the proposition that time management is a critical characteristic of effective self-regulated learners. Fourth, the thesis proposes a novel method that integrates computational and visualization techniques to explore the frequency, connections, ordering, and the time of the execution of time management and learning tactics, which usually been done in isolation in the existing literature. Then, the thesis quantitatively and theoretically compare time management and learning strategies detected with this new method to explore the role of time management and learning strategies in learning as drawing on theories of educational psychology. Fifth, this new method was validated in a study that was conducted on the trace data of different learning modalities and interaction modes, where large cohorts are involved. This final study emphasizes the importance of multivocality approach in the study of time management and other relevant learning constructs. Finally, the thesis concludes with a discussion of practical implications, the significance of the results, and future research directions

    Improving Hybrid Brainstorming Outcomes with Scripting and Group Awareness Support

    Previous research has shown that hybrid brainstorming, which combines individual and group methods, generates more ideas than either approach alone. However, the quality of these ideas remains similar across different methods. This study, guided by the dual-pathway to creativity model, tested two computer-supported scaffolds – scripting and group awareness support – for enhancing idea quality in hybrid brainstorming. 94 higher education students,grouped into triads, were tasked with generating ideas in three conditions. The Control condition used standard hybrid brainstorming without extra support. In the Experimental 1 condition, students received scripting support during individual brainstorming, and students in the Experimental 2 condition were provided with group awareness support during the group phase in addition. While the quantity of ideas was similar across all conditions, the Experimental 2 condition produced ideas of higher quality, and the Experimental 1 condition also showed improved idea quality in the individual phase compared to the Control condition

    The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of our everyday lives – from the political to the economic to the social. Using a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this dynamic collection examines various discourses, modes and media in circulation during the early stages of the pandemic, and how these have impacted our daily lives in terms of the various meanings they express. Examples include how national and international news organisations communicate important information about the virus and the crisis, the public’s reactions to such communications, the resultant (counter-)discourses as manifested in social media posts and memes, as well as the impact social distancing policies and mobility restrictions have had on people’s communication and interaction practices. The book offers a synoptic view of how the pandemic was communicated, represented and (re-)contextualised across different spheres, and ultimately hopes to help account for the significant changes we are continuing to witness in our everyday lives as the pandemic unfolds. This volume will appeal primarily to scholars in the field of (multimodal) discourse analysis. It will also be of interest to researchers and graduate students in other fields whose work focuses on the use of multimodal artefacts for communication and meaning making

Conference (11a : 2018 : Barcelona, Catalunya),ICDHS is the acronym of the International Committee of De­sign History and Design Studies, an organisation that brings together scholars from Spain, Cuba, Turkey, Mexico, Finland, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal, the US, Tai­wan, Canada and the UK. Since 1999, when the Design and Art History departments of the University of Barcelona organised the first edition of the ICDHS, a conference has been held every two years at a different venue around the world. These conferences have had two dis­tinct aims: first, to present original research in the fields of Design History and Design Studies and, second, to include contributions in these fields from non-hegemonic countries, offering a speaking platform to many scientific communities that are already active or are forming and developing. For that reason, the structure of the conferences combines many paral­lel strands, including poster presentations and keynote speak­ers who lecture on the conferences’ main themes. The 2018 event is rather special. The Taipei 2016 conference was the 10th edition and a commemoration of the ten celebrations to date. Returning to Barcelona in 2018 marks the end of one stage and the beginning of a new one for the Committee. The numbering chosen—“10+1”—also means that Barcelona 2018 is both an end and a beginning in the ICDHS’s own history. The book brings together 137 papers delivered at the ICDHS 10th+1 Conference held in Barcelona on 29–31 October 2018. The papers are preceded by texts of the four keynote lectures and a written tribute from the ICDHS Board to its founder and figurehead, Anna Calvera (1954–2018).
