    Parallel video decoding in the emerging HEVC standard

    In this paper we propose and evaluate a parallelization strategy for the emerging HEVC video coding standard. The proposed strategy is based on entropy slices which allows exploiting parallelism in the entropy decoding stage while maintaining high coding efficiency. Our approach requires to encode videos with one entropy slice per LCU row in order to decode multiple LCU rows in a wavefront parallel manner. Evaluations performed on a PC with 12 Intel Xeon cores running at 3.3 GHz show that it is possible to achieve real-time performance for 1920×1080p50 (53.1 fps) and 2560×1600 (29.5fps) video resolutions with speedups of 5.2× and 6.3× compared to sequential execution, respectively

    Complexity management of H.264/AVC video compression.

    The H. 264/AVC video coding standard offers significantly improved compression efficiency and flexibility compared to previous standards. However, the high computational complexity of H. 264/AVC is a problem for codecs running on low-power hand held devices and general purpose computers. This thesis presents new techniques to reduce, control and manage the computational complexity of an H. 264/AVC codec. A new complexity reduction algorithm for H. 264/AVC is developed. This algorithm predicts "skipped" macroblocks prior to motion estimation by estimating a Lagrange ratedistortion cost function. Complexity savings are achieved by not processing the macroblocks that are predicted as "skipped". The Lagrange multiplier is adaptively modelled as a function of the quantisation parameter and video sequence statistics. Simulation results show that this algorithm achieves significant complexity savings with a negligible loss in rate-distortion performance. The complexity reduction algorithm is further developed to achieve complexity-scalable control of the encoding process. The Lagrangian cost estimation is extended to incorporate computational complexity. A target level of complexity is maintained by using a feedback algorithm to update the Lagrange multiplier associated with complexity. Results indicate that scalable complexity control of the encoding process can be achieved whilst maintaining near optimal complexity-rate-distortion performance. A complexity management framework is proposed for maximising the perceptual quality of coded video in a real-time processing-power constrained environment. A real-time frame-level control algorithm and a per-frame complexity control algorithm are combined in order to manage the encoding process such that a high frame rate is maintained without significantly losing frame quality. Subjective evaluations show that the managed complexity approach results in higher perceptual quality compared to a reference encoder that drops frames in computationally constrained situations. These novel algorithms are likely to be useful in implementing real-time H. 264/AVC standard encoders in computationally constrained environments such as low-power mobile devices and general purpose computers

The increasing popularity of video capture and playback on portable devices requires that the energy of the video processing be kept to a minimum. This work implements several architecture optimizations that reduce the system power of a high-definition video decoder. In order to decode high resolutions at low voltages and low frequencies, we employ techniques such as pipelining, unit parallelism, multiple cores, and multiple voltage/frequency domains. For example, a 3-core decoder can reduce the required clock frequency by 2.91 x, which enables a power reduction of 61% relative to a full-voltage single-core decoder. To reduce the total memory system power, several caching techniques are demonstrated that can dramatically reduce the off-chip memory bandwidth and power at the cost of increased chip area. A 123 kB data-forwarding cache can reduce the read bandwidth from external memory by 53%, which leads to 44% power savings in the memory reads. To demonstrate these low-power ideas, a H.264/AVC Baseline Level 3.2 decoder ASIC was fabricated in 65 nm CMOS and verified. It operates down to 0.7 V and has a measured power down to 1.8 mW when decoding a high definition 720p video at 30 frames per second, which is over an order of magnitude lower than previously published results.by Daniel Frederic Finchelstein.Ph.D

    A methodology for hardware-software codesign

The integration of special purpose hardware into applications running in software is difficult for a number of reasons. Some of the difficulty is due to the difference between the models used to program hardware and software, but great effort is also required to coordinate the simultaneous execution of the application running on the microprocessor with the accelerated kernel(s) running in hardware. To further compound the problem, current design methodologies for embedded applications require an early determination of the design partitioning which allows hardware and software to be developed simultaneously, each adhering to a rigid interface contract. This approach is problematic because often a good hardware-software decomposition is not known until deep into the design process. Fixed interfaces and the burden of reimplementation prevent the migration of functionality motivated by repartitioning. This thesis presents a two-part solution to the integration of special purpose hardware into applications running in software. The first part addresses the problem of generating infrastructure for hardware-accelerated applications. We present a methodology in which the application is represented as a dataflow graph and the computation at each node is specified for execution either in software or as specialized hardware using the programmer's language of choice. An interface compiler as been implemented which takes as input the FIFO edges of the graph and generates code to connect all the different parts of the program, including those which communicate across the hardware/software boundary. This methodology, which we demonstrate on an FPGA platform, enables programmers to effectively exploit hardware acceleration without ever leaving the application space. The second part of this thesis presents an implementation of the Bluespec Codesign Language (BCL) to address the difficulty of experimenting with hardware/software partitioning alternatives. Based on guarded atomic actions, BCL can be used to specify both hardware and low-level software. Based on Bluespec SystemVerilog (BSV) for which a hardware compiler by Bluespec Inc. is commercially available, BCL has been augmented with extensions to support more efficient software generation. In BCL, the programmer specifies the entire design, including the partitioning, allowing the compiler to synthesize efficient software and hardware, along with transactors for communication between the partitions. The benefit of using a single language to express the entire design is that a programmer can easily experiment with many different hardware/software decompositions without needing to re-write the application code.     Network-on-Chip Based H.264 Video Decoder on a Field Programmable Gate Array

    This thesis develops the first fully network-on-chip (NoC) based h.264 video decoder implemented in real hardware on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). This thesis starts with an overview of the h.264 video coding standard and an introduction to the NoC communication paradigm. Following this, a series of processing elements (PEs) are developed which implement the component algorithms making up the h.264 video decoder. These PEs, described primarily in VHDL with some Verilog and C, are then mapped to an NoC which is generated using the CONNECT NoC generation tool. To demonstrate the scalability of the proposed NoC based design, a second NoC based video decoder is implemented on a smaller FPGA using the same PEs on a more compact NoC topology. The performance of both decoders, as well as their component PEs, is evaluated on real hardware. An analysis of the performance results is conducted and recommendations for future work are made based on the results of this analysis. Aside from the development of the proposed decoder, a major contribution of this thesis is the release of all source materials for this design as open source hardware and software. The release of these materials will allow other researchers to more easily replicate this work, as well as create derivative works in the areas of NoC based designs for FPGA, video coding and decoding, and related areas
