Design of an Anthropomorphic, Compliant, and Lightweight Dual Arm for Aerial Manipulation
This paper presents an anthropomorphic, compliant and lightweight dual arm manipulator designed and developed for aerial manipulation applications with multi-rotor platforms. Each arm provides four degrees of freedom in a human-like kinematic configuration for end effector positioning: shoulder pitch, roll and yaw, and elbow pitch. The dual arm, weighting 1.3 kg in total, employs smart servo actuators and a customized and carefully designed aluminum frame structure manufactured by laser cut. The proposed
design reduces the manufacturing cost as no computer numerical control machined part is used. Mechanical joint compliance is provided in all the joints, introducing a compact spring-lever transmission mechanism between the servo shaft and the links, integrating a potentiometer for measuring the deflection of the joints.
The servo actuators are partially or fully isolated against impacts and overloads thanks to the ange bearings attached to the frame structure that support the rotation of the links and the deflection of the joints. This simple mechanism increases the robustness of the arms and safety in the physical interactions between the aerial
robot and the environment. The developed manipulator has been validated through different experiments in fixed base test-bench and in outdoor flight tests.UniĂłn Europea H2020-ICT-2014- 644271Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad DPI2015-71524-RMinisterio de EconomĂa y Competitividad DPI2017-89790-
Folding Assembly by Means of Dual-Arm Robotic Manipulation
In this paper, we consider folding assembly as an assembly primitive suitable
for dual-arm robotic assembly, that can be integrated in a higher level
assembly strategy. The system composed by two pieces in contact is modelled as
an articulated object, connected by a prismatic-revolute joint. Different
grasping scenarios were considered in order to model the system, and a simple
controller based on feedback linearisation is proposed, using force torque
measurements to compute the contact point kinematics. The folding assembly
controller has been experimentally tested with two sample parts, in order to
showcase folding assembly as a viable assembly primitive.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for ICRA 201
Asymmetric Dual-Arm Task Execution using an Extended Relative Jacobian
Coordinated dual-arm manipulation tasks can be broadly characterized as
possessing absolute and relative motion components. Relative motion tasks, in
particular, are inherently redundant in the way they can be distributed between
end-effectors. In this work, we analyse cooperative manipulation in terms of
the asymmetric resolution of relative motion tasks. We discuss how existing
approaches enable the asymmetric execution of a relative motion task, and show
how an asymmetric relative motion space can be defined. We leverage this result
to propose an extended relative Jacobian to model the cooperative system, which
allows a user to set a concrete degree of asymmetry in the task execution. This
is achieved without the need for prescribing an absolute motion target.
Instead, the absolute motion remains available as a functional redundancy to
the system. We illustrate the properties of our proposed Jacobian through
numerical simulations of a novel differential Inverse Kinematics algorithm.Comment: Accepted for presentation at ISRR19. 16 Page
A Certified-Complete Bimanual Manipulation Planner
Planning motions for two robot arms to move an object collaboratively is a
difficult problem, mainly because of the closed-chain constraint, which arises
whenever two robot hands simultaneously grasp a single rigid object. In this
paper, we propose a manipulation planning algorithm to bring an object from an
initial stable placement (position and orientation of the object on the support
surface) towards a goal stable placement. The key specificity of our algorithm
is that it is certified-complete: for a given object and a given environment,
we provide a certificate that the algorithm will find a solution to any
bimanual manipulation query in that environment whenever one exists. Moreover,
the certificate is constructive: at run-time, it can be used to quickly find a
solution to a given query. The algorithm is tested in software and hardware on
a number of large pieces of furniture.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
On-line Joint Limit Avoidance for Torque Controlled Robots by Joint Space Parametrization
This paper proposes control laws ensuring the stabilization of a time-varying
desired joint trajectory, as well as joint limit avoidance, in the case of
fully-actuated manipulators. The key idea is to perform a parametrization of
the feasible joint space in terms of exogenous states. It follows that the
control of these states allows for joint limit avoidance. One of the main
outcomes of this paper is that position terms in control laws are replaced by
parametrized terms, where joint limits must be avoided. Stability and
convergence of time-varying reference trajectories obtained with the proposed
method are demonstrated to be in the sense of Lyapunov. The introduced control
laws are verified by carrying out experiments on two degrees-of-freedom of the
humanoid robot iCub.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to the 2016 IEEE-RAS International

Dexterous Manipulation Graphs
We propose the Dexterous Manipulation Graph as a tool to address in-hand
manipulation and reposition an object inside a robot's end-effector. This graph
is used to plan a sequence of manipulation primitives so to bring the object to
the desired end pose. This sequence of primitives is translated into motions of
the robot to move the object held by the end-effector. We use a dual arm robot
with parallel grippers to test our method on a real system and show successful
planning and execution of in-hand manipulation
Methods for autonomous wristband placement with a search-and-rescue aerial manipulator
A new robotic system for Search And Rescue (SAR) operations based on the automatic wristband placement on the victims’ arm, which may provide identification, beaconing and remote sensor readings for continuous health monitoring. This paper focuses on the development of the automatic target localization and the device placement using an unmanned aerial manipulator. The automatic wrist detection and localization system uses an RGB-D camera and a convolutional neural network based on the region faster method (Faster R-CNN). A lightweight parallel delta manipulator with a large workspace has been built, and a new design of a wristband in the form of a passive detachable gripper, is presented, which under contact, automatically attaches to the human, while disengages from the manipulator. A new trajectory planning method has been used to minimize the torques caused by the external forces during contact, which cause attitude perturbations. Experiments have been done to evaluate the machine learning method for detection and location, and for the assessment of the performance of the trajectory planning method. The results show how the VGG-16 neural network provides a detection accuracy of 67.99%. Moreover, simulation experiments have been done to show that the new trajectories minimize the perturbations to the aerial platform.Universidad de Málaga.
