    An incremental approach to the solution of global trajectory optimization problems

    This paper presents an incremental approach to the solution of multiple gravity assist trajectories (MGA) with deep space maneuvers. The whole problem is decomposed in sub-problems that are solved incrementally. The solution of each sub-problem leads to a progressive reduction of the search space. Unlike other similar methods, the search for solutions of each sub-problem is performed through a stochastic approach. The resulting set of disconnected boxes is transformed into a connected collection of boxes through an affine transformation. For MGA problems, the incremental approach increases both the efficiency and reliability of the optimization process. Two relevant examples will illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    On testing global optimization algorithms for space trajectory design

    In this paper we discuss the procedures to test a global search algorithm applied to a space trajectory design problem. Then, we present some performance indexes that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of global optimization algorithms. The performance indexes are then compared highlighting the actual significance of each one of them. A number of global optimization algorithms are tested on four typical space trajectory design problems. From the results of the proposed testing procedure we infer for each pair algorithm-problem the relation between the heuristics implemented in the solution algorithm and the main characteristics of the problem under investigation. From this analysis we derive a novel interpretation of some evolutionary heuristics, based on dynamical system theory and we significantly improve the performance of one of the tested algorithms

    Analysis of some global optimization algorithms for space trajectory design

    In this paper, we analyze the performance of some global search algorithms on a number of space trajectory design problems. A rigorous testing procedure is introduced to measure the ability of an algorithm to identify the set of Ā²-optimal solutions. From the analysis of the test results, a novel algorithm is derived. The development of the novel algorithm starts from the redefinition of some evolutionary heuristics in the form of a discrete dynamical system. The convergence properties of this discrete dynamical system are used to derive a hybrid evolutionary algorithm that displays very good performance on the particular class of problems presented in this paper

    In this chapter we present a hybridization of a stochastic based search approach for multi-objective optimization with a deterministic domain decomposition of the solution space. Prior to the presentation of the algorithm we introduce a general formulation of the optimization problem that is suitable to describe both single and multi-objective problems. The stochastic approach, based on behaviorism, combinedwith the decomposition of the solutions pace was tested on a set of standard multi-objective optimization problems and on a simple but representative case of space trajectory design

    A hybrid multiagent approach for global trajectory optimization

    In this paper we consider a global optimization method for space trajectory design problems. The method, which actually aims at finding not only the global minimizer but a whole set of low-lying local minimizers(corresponding to a set of different design options), is based on a domain decomposition technique where each subdomain is evaluated through a procedure based on the evolution of a population of agents. The method is applied to two space trajectory design problems and compared with existing deterministic and stochastic global optimization methods
