    Agent-based strategic planner for the production of samll lots of complex products: theoretical and practical perspectives

    This paper presents a strategic planner that assists the decision-makers to take strategic decisions on short term to respond faster and efficiently to unexpected events in the ramp-up production of complex and highly customized products, namely in situations of peak of demand, late change requests and immature technology. This tool combines the flexibility of multi-agent systems with the optimization capability of mathematical optimization solvers.     A multi-agent system tool for strategic planning in small-lot production environments

    The scale of output respectively sales matters in strategic and operations planning because it controls the degression of fixed costs, of learning curve effects (degression of average or perunit variable costs) or purchasing power that influences prime costs. But what is “small”? There is no clear quantitative definition of “small”, except that the minimum is 1. In the usecases of the ARUM project, airframers and producers of galley appliances, want to sell as much as possible of the same, just limited by the size of the markets for aircrafts and related appliances as well as the interplay of competitive forces [1]. The most sold aircrafts are the Airbus A320 family with an average output of about 180 units per year (6486 in total) [2] and the Boeing 737 family with 230 units per year (8350 in total) [3]. And Iacobuccy HF (IHF) in the long average produced about 1000 galley appliances per year. Compared to car industry that is very small. Compared to the size of the aviation market it is very reasonable. IHF is world marked leader for airworthy coffee makers, On the other side, in the purchasing market also the size of the bill of materials of the product matters. In the cases of the A320 and the B737 that are about 4 million parts per unit, a very big scale, while the galley appliances consist of some hundred parts – a small scale. The differences translate into variations of the leeway of pricing, of market shares and of the profitability. For the purpose of this paper and with regard to the use-case respectively the demonstration scenario it will be sufficient to have a look at the impact of small lots in the sales markets in aviation industry.In this article, the authors present the results that were developed with the partial support of ARUM (Adaptive pRodUction Management, http://arum-project.eu/) project.     Post-Foreclosure Community Stabilization Strategies: Case Studies and Early Lessons 2008

    In the midst of all the foreclosures sweeping the country, and the turmoil on Wall Street, nonprofit housing organizations are quietly going about the work of stabilizing communities hard hit by the crisis. Most have had frontline responsibility for counseling families threatened with foreclosure. With their assistance tens of thousands of families have restructured their budgets, negotiated with servicers to modify their loans, and saved their homes. Other families, too far along in the foreclosure process to stop it from happening, have received help transitioning to new housing arrangements.While the work with distressed homeowners must continue, nonprofits are feeling increased pressure to deal with the growing foreclosed housing stock. These units are causing incalculable harm to neighborhoods, and any hope of housing recovery must ensure that these units are swiftly put back into productive use or demolished. This collection of 14 case studies outlines strategies that nonprofit organizations across the country are using to begin the process of repairing damaged communities.The stakes are enormous. Vacant housing invites vandalism, and becomes a hub for gangs and crime. Virtually all case study subjects reported that, within weeks of housing becoming vacant, thieves break into the units and strip them of their valuable copper plumbing and wiring, heedless of any destruction they leave in their wake. In Phoenix a half-finished, abandoned subdivision was used as an informal "Home Depot" as other homeowners broke in and helped themselves to fixtures and appliances. In Cleveland, vandals remove not just the copper but the aluminum siding from vacant houses. In photos these houses have a desolate, post-disaster look, like the aftermath of a hurricane. When units get demolished the vacant lots soon sprout grass and trash, adding to the community's forlorn appearance.Vacant, deteriorated units place a downward pressure on housing values that puts nearby neighbors in a bind. In order to sell their units they will have to reduce the price, as no one will pay top dollar to live in a blighted neighborhood. Yet their ability to refinance into a more affordable mortgage may be compromised by the drop in property values; in some cases this leads to additional foreclosures and the downward cycle continues.Intervening in these troubled neighborhoods is challenging. In some markets housing prices are still falling, making it hard to determine the value of the units. Bank asset managers and servicers often lack detailed knowledge of the markets, or even of the units they have in their own inventory. This leads them to overvalue their properties and hold out for more than they are worth, delaying the process of acquiring and renovating them for resale to new homebuyers. Finally, the complex ownership structure of mortgages which were rolled into collateralized debt obligations and other investment vehicles makes it very difficult to establish who owns properties and who has authority to negotiate their sale.0

    A symbiotic human–machine learning approach for production ramp-up

    Constantly shorter product lifecycles and the high number of product variants necessitate frequent production system reconfigurations and changeovers. Shortening ramp-up and changeover times is essential to achieve the agility required to respond to these challenges. This work investigates a symbiotic human–machine environment, which combines a formal framework for capturing structured ramp-up experiences from expert production engineers with a reinforcement learning method to formulate effective ramp-up policies. Such learned policies have been shown to reduce unnecessary iterations in human decision-making processes by suggesting the most appropriate actions for different ramp-up states. One of the key challenges for machine learning based methods, particularly for episodic problems with complex state-spaces, such as ramp-up, is the exploration strategy that can maximize the information gain while minimizing the number of exploration steps required to find good policies. This paper proposes an exploration strategy for reinforcement learning, guided by a human expert. The proposed approach combines human intelligence with machine’s capability for processing data quickly, accurately, and reliably. The efficiency of the proposed human exploration guided machine learning strategy is assessed by comparing it with three machine-based exploration strategies. To test and compare the four strategies, a ramp-up emulator was built, based on system experimentation and user experience. The results of the experiments show that human-guided exploration can achieve close to optimal behavior, with far less data than what is needed for traditional machine-based strategies

    A collaborative framework in outbound logistics for the us automakers

    The competitive landscape of the U.S. automotive market has transformed from the traditional Big Three players to too many viable players. In 2008-2009, the harsh market conditions, excess production capacity, capital asset redundancies, and many inefficient strategies submerged as the roadblocks for the US automakers to stay competitive and profitable in the North American market. In this new competitive era, cross-company collaboration in product development, standardizing and communizing supply base, sharing flexible manufacturing platforms, using common inbound and out bound logistics service providers and warehousing etc. can play vital roles for the US automakers to reduce overall cost and return to profitability. Through the horizontal collaboration in the outbound logistics operations, these companies can create close-knit business partnership and act faster than the foreign rivals in delivering finished vehicles at the optimum cost. The optimization of outbound logistics operations through consolidation and collaboration among OEMs has tremendous potential to contribute to the profitability by lowering the cost of transportation, in-house inventory, transportation time, and facility costs. The collaboration in the intra- and inter-OEM outbound logistics operations is a critical area that the US automakers need to pay attention and prioritize in their cost reduction initiatives. This research presents an integrated collaboration framework for the outbound logistics operations of the US automakers. In our framework, we propose three potential levels for the US automakers to form outbound logistics collaboration: operational, tactical, and strategic. Our research proposition is to improve the performance of outbound logistics systems of automotive OEMs by means of horizontal collaboration between plants and competing OEMs. The proposed research thus relates to the literature on logistics system design and management and horizontal collaboration in supply chain management. The collaboration framework is demonstrated through a real world case study in US automotive industry. The contribution of this research is the introduction of a framework for intra- and inter-OEM collaboration and the development of novel logistics network design and flow models integrated with inventory models, lost sales, and expedited shipment. Besides the contribution to the academic literature, the proposed collaborative distribution system is a new concept in the automotive industry. Hence, this novel research work will also benefit to the practitioners.     Engineering of next generation cyber-physical automation system architectures

    Cyber-Physical-Systems (CPS) enable flexible and reconfigurable realization of automation system architectures, utilizing distributed control architectures with non-hierarchical modules linked together through different communication systems. Several control system architectures have been developed and validated in the past years by research groups. However, there is still a lack of implementation in industry. The intention of this work is to provide a summary of current alternative control system architectures that could be applied in industrial automation domain as well as a review of their commonalities. The aim is to point out the differences between the traditional centralized and hierarchical architectures to discussed ones, which rely on decentralized decision-making and control. Challenges and impacts that industries and engineers face in the process of adopting decentralized control architectures are discussed, analysing the obstacles for industrial acceptance and the new necessary interdisciplinary engineering skills.
