Film policy and the emergence of the cross-cultural: exploring crossover cinema in Flanders (Belgium)

    Get PDF
With several films taking on a cross-cultural character, a certain ‘crossover trend’ may be observed within the recent upswing of Flemish cinema (a subdivision of Belgian cinema). This trend is characterized by two major strands: first, migrant and diasporic filmmakers finally seem to be emerging, and second, several filmmakers tend to cross the globe to make their films, hereby minimizing links with Flemish indigenous culture. While paying special attention to the crucial role of film policy in this context, this contribution further investigates the crossover trend by focusing on Turquaze (2010, Kadir Balci) and Altiplano (2009, Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodworth)

    Does Globalization Affect Growth?

    Get PDF
The paper presents an index of globalization covering its three main dimensions: economic integration, social integration, and political integration. Using panel data for 123 countries in 1970-2000 the effects of the overall index of globalization as well as sub-indexes constructed to measure the single dimensions on economic growth are analyzed empirically. The results show that globalization promotes growth - but not to an extent necessary to reduce poverty on a large scale. The dimensions most robustly related with growth refer to actual economic flows and restrictions in developed countries. Although less robustly, information flows also promote growth whereas political integration has no effect.Globalization, Growth

Diplomacy of Iran towards Globalization: The Tension between Globalization and Islamization in Iran

The issue of globalization and its impacts on national and local cultures has gained ground recently in scientific research. Infiltration of global forces and foreign cultures into the territory of national and local cultures has leaded to the formation of the feeling of threat and danger among a great number of societies. This feeling of threat has caused some reaction among the native cultures in the world. As well as many other countries, Iran is concerned about the threats and the weakening of the Iranian cultural and religious values because the cultures and the values have entered its territory through globalization. In fact, this feeling has resulted in the tension between two forces inside the country, i.e., the Iranian Islamic-Religious Culture and Globalization. Each of these forces pursues more penetration in social and cultural arenas in Iran. Such tension is, in fact, between the two forces named “Islamization” and globalization. Mots-clĂ©s: Mondialisation; Islamisation; Invasion culturelle; L'Iran ' diplomati

The issue of digital piracy is a hot button among governments around the world. Piracy rates may significantly affect both internal and international trade of cultural goods. This paper aims to empirically assess the effect of digital piracy on bilateral trade in cultural goods. We focus on trade in music, films and media. Analysing an 11-year panel of 25 countries, we find that piracy does affect bilateral trade, but to varying extents.trade; trade; cultural goods; piracy; spatial filtering; network autocorrelation
