    A sequence based genetic algorithm with local search for the travelling salesman problem

    The standard Genetic Algorithm often suffers from slow convergence for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this study, we present a sequence based genetic algorithm (SBGA) for the symmetric travelling salesman problem (TSP). In our proposed method, a set of sequences are extracted from the best individuals, which are used to guide the search of SBGA. Additionally, some procedures are applied to maintain the diversity by breaking the selected sequences into sub tours if the best individual of the population does not improve. SBGA is compared with the inver-over operator, a state-of-the-art algorithm for the TSP, on a set of benchmark TSPs. Experimental results show that the convergence speed of SBGA is very promising and much faster than that of the inver-over algorithm and that SBGA achieves a similar solution quality on all test TSPs

    Joint QoS multicast routing and channel assignment in multiradio multichannel wireless mesh networks using intelligent computational methods

It is proved to be a NP-hard problem. Previous work separates the multicast tree construction from the channel assignment. Therefore they bear severe drawback, that is, channel assignment cannot work well with the determined multicast tree. In this paper, we integrate them together and solve it by intelligent computational methods. First, we develop a unified framework which consists of the problem formulation, the solution representation, the fitness function, and the channel assignment algorithm. Then, we propose three separate algorithms based on three representative intelligent computational methods (i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and tabu search). These three algorithms aim to search minimum-interference multicast trees which also satisfy the end-to-end delay constraint and optimize the usage of the scarce radio network resource in wireless mesh networks. To achieve this goal, the optimization techniques based on state of the art genetic algorithm and the techniques to control the annealing process and the tabu search procedure are well developed separately. Simulation results show that the proposed three intelligent computational methods based multicast algorithms all achieve better performance in terms of both the total channel conflict and the tree cost than those comparative references.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1

    Industrial and Tramp Ship Routing Problems: Closing the Gap for Real-Scale Instances

    Recent studies in maritime logistics have introduced a general ship routing problem and a benchmark suite based on real shipping segments, considering pickups and deliveries, cargo selection, ship-dependent starting locations, travel times and costs, time windows, and incompatibility constraints, among other features. Together, these characteristics pose considerable challenges for exact and heuristic methods, and some cases with as few as 18 cargoes remain unsolved. To face this challenge, we propose an exact branch-and-price (B&P) algorithm and a hybrid metaheuristic. Our exact method generates elementary routes, but exploits decremental state-space relaxation to speed up column generation, heuristic strong branching, as well as advanced preprocessing and route enumeration techniques. Our metaheuristic is a sophisticated extension of the unified hybrid genetic search. It exploits a set-partitioning phase and uses problem-tailored variation operators to efficiently handle all the problem characteristics. As shown in our experimental analyses, the B&P optimally solves 239/240 existing instances within one hour. Scalability experiments on even larger problems demonstrate that it can optimally solve problems with around 60 ships and 200 cargoes (i.e., 400 pickup and delivery services) and find optimality gaps below 1.04% on the largest cases with up to 260 cargoes. The hybrid metaheuristic outperforms all previous heuristics and produces near-optimal solutions within minutes. These results are noteworthy, since these instances are comparable in size with the largest problems routinely solved by shipping companies

    Mobile transporter path planning

    The use of a genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the mobile transporter path planning problem is investigated. The mobile transporter is a traveling robotic vehicle proposed for the space station which must be able to reach any point of the structure autonomously. Elements of the genetic algorithm are explored in both a theoretical and experimental sense. Specifically, double crossover, greedy crossover, and tournament selection techniques are examined. Additionally, the use of local optimization techniques working in concert with the GA are also explored. Recent developments in genetic algorithm theory are shown to be particularly effective in a path planning problem domain, though problem areas can be cited which require more research

    Optimizing genetic algorithm strategies for evolving networks

    This paper explores the use of genetic algorithms for the design of networks, where the demands on the network fluctuate in time. For varying network constraints, we find the best network using the standard genetic algorithm operators such as inversion, mutation and crossover. We also examine how the choice of genetic algorithm operators affects the quality of the best network found. Such networks typically contain redundancy in servers, where several servers perform the same task and pleiotropy, where servers perform multiple tasks. We explore this trade-off between pleiotropy versus redundancy on the cost versus reliability as a measure of the quality of the network.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    A hybrid genetic algorithm and inver over approach for the travelling salesman problem

The first phase is based on a sequence based genetic algorithm (SBGA) with an embedded local search scheme. Within the SBGA, a memory is introduced to store good sequences (sub-tours) extracted from previous good solutions and the stored sequences are used to guide the generation of offspring via local search during the evolution of the population. Additionally, we also apply some techniques to adapt the key parameters based on whether the best individual of the population improves or not and maintain the diversity. After SBGA finishes, the hybrid approach enters the second phase, where the inver over (IO) operator, which is a state-of-the-art algorithm for the TSP, is used to further improve the solution quality of the population. Experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed hybrid approach in comparison with several relevant algorithms on a set of benchmark TSP instances.     A reduced-uncertainty hybrid evolutionary algorithm for solving dynamic shortest-path routing problem

    The need for effective packet transmission to deliver advanced performance in wireless networks creates the need to find shortest network paths efficiently and quickly. This paper addresses a Reduced Uncertainty Based Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm (RUBHEA) to solve Dynamic Shortest Path Routing Problem (DSPRP) effectively and rapidly. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are integrated as a hybrid algorithm to find the best solution within the search space of dynamically changing networks. Both GA and PSO share context of individuals to reduce uncertainty in RUBHEA. Various regions of search space are explored and learned by RUBHEA. By employing a modified priority encoding method, each individual in both GA and PSO are represented as a potential solution for DSPRP. A Complete statistical analysis has been performed to compare the performance of RUBHEA with various state-of-the-art algorithms. It shows that RUBHEA is considerably superior (reducing the failure rate by up to 50%) to similar approaches with increasing number of nodes encountered in the networks

    The Time-Dependent Orienteering Problem with Time Windows (TDOPTW) is a combinatorial optimization problem defined on graphs. Its real life applications are particularly associated with tourist trip planning in trans-port networks, where travel time between two points depends on the moment of travel start. In the paper an effective TDOPTW solution (evolutionary algorithm with local search operators) was presented and applied to gen-erate attractive tours in real public transport networks of Białystok and Athens. The method achieved very high-quality solutions in a short execution time
