A Sequent Calculus for a Semi-Associative Law
We introduce a sequent calculus with a simple restriction of Lambek\u27s product rules that precisely captures the classical Tamari order, i.e., the partial order on fully-bracketed words (equivalently, binary trees) induced by a semi-associative law (equivalently, tree rotation). We establish a focusing property for this sequent calculus (a strengthening of cut-elimination), which yields the following coherence theorem: every valid entailment in the Tamari order has exactly one focused derivation. One combinatorial application of this coherence theorem is a new proof of the Tutte-Chapoton formula for the number of intervals in the Tamari lattice Y_n. Elsewhere, we have also used the sequent calculus and the coherence theorem to build a surprising bijection between intervals of the Tamari order and a natural fragment of lambda calculus, consisting of the beta-normal planar lambda terms with no closed proper subterms
q-deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory: Classification, categorification and refinement
We characterise the quantum group gauge symmetries underlying q-deformations
of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory by studying their relationships with the
matrix models that appear in Chern-Simons theory and six-dimensional N=2 gauge
theories, together with their refinements and supersymmetric extensions. We
develop uniqueness results for quantum deformations and refinements of gauge
theories in two dimensions, and describe several potential analytic and
geometric realisations of them. We reconstruct standard q-deformed Yang-Mills
amplitudes via gluing rules in the representation category of the quantum group
associated to the gauge group, whose numerical invariants are the usual
characters in the Grothendieck group of the category. We apply this formalism
to compute refinements of q-deformed amplitudes in terms of generalised
characters, and relate them to refined Chern-Simons matrix models and
generalized unitary matrix integrals in the quantum beta-ensemble which compute
refined topological string amplitudes. We also describe applications of our
results to gauge theories in five and seven dimensions, and to the dual
superconformal field theories in four dimensions which descend from the N=(2,0)
six-dimensional superconformal theory.Comment: 71 pages; v2: references added; final version to be published in

Lifting Gomory Cuts With Bounded Variables
Recently, Balas and Qualizza introduced a new cut for mixed 0,1 programs, called lopsided cut. Here we present a family of cuts that comprises the Gomory mixed integer cut at one extreme and the lopsided cut at the other. We show that every inequality in this family is extreme for the appropriate infinite relaxation. We also show that these inequalities are split cuts. Finally we provide computational results
Tensor products and regularity properties of Cuntz semigroups
The Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra is an important invariant in the
structure and classification theory of C*-algebras. It captures more
information than K-theory but is often more delicate to handle. We
systematically study the lattice and category theoretic aspects of Cuntz
semigroups.
Given a C*-algebra , its (concrete) Cuntz semigroup is an object
in the category of (abstract) Cuntz semigroups, as introduced by Coward,
Elliott and Ivanescu. To clarify the distinction between concrete and abstract
Cuntz semigroups, we will call the latter -semigroups.
We establish the existence of tensor products in the category and study
the basic properties of this construction. We show that is a symmetric,
monoidal category and relate with for
certain classes of C*-algebras.
As a main tool for our approach we introduce the category of
pre-completed Cuntz semigroups. We show that is a full, reflective
subcategory of . One can then easily deduce properties of from
respective properties of , e.g. the existence of tensor products and
inductive limits. The advantage is that constructions in are much easier
since the objects are purely algebraic.
We also develop a theory of -semirings and their semimodules. The Cuntz
semigroup of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra has a natural product giving
it the structure of a -semiring. We give explicit characterizations of
-semimodules over such -semirings. For instance, we show that a
-semigroup tensorially absorbs the -semiring of the Jiang-Su
algebra if and only if is almost unperforated and almost divisible, thus
establishing a semigroup version of the Toms-Winter conjecture.Comment: 195 pages; revised version; several proofs streamlined; some results
