On the Energy Efficiency of LT Codes in Proactive Wireless Sensor Networks
This paper presents an in-depth analysis on the energy efficiency of Luby
Transform (LT) codes with Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation in a Wireless
Sensor Network (WSN) over Rayleigh fading channels with pathloss. We describe a
proactive system model according to a flexible duty-cycling mechanism utilized
in practical sensor apparatus. The present analysis is based on realistic
parameters including the effect of channel bandwidth used in the IEEE 802.15.4
standard, active mode duration and computation energy. A comprehensive
analysis, supported by some simulation studies on the probability mass function
of the LT code rate and coding gain, shows that among uncoded FSK and various
classical channel coding schemes, the optimized LT coded FSK is the most
energy-efficient scheme for distance d greater than the pre-determined
threshold level d_T , where the optimization is performed over coding and
modulation parameters. In addition, although the optimized uncoded FSK
outperforms coded schemes for d < d_T , the energy gap between LT coded and
uncoded FSK is negligible for d < d_T compared to the other coded schemes.
These results come from the flexibility of the LT code to adjust its rate to
suit instantaneous channel conditions, and suggest that LT codes are beneficial
in practical low-power WSNs with dynamic position sensor nodes.Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Space-Time Signal Design for Multilevel Polar Coding in Slow Fading Broadcast Channels
Slow fading broadcast channels can model a wide range of applications in
wireless networks. Due to delay requirements and the unavailability of the
channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), these channels for many
applications are non-ergodic. The appropriate measure for designing signals in
non-ergodic channels is the outage probability. In this paper, we provide a
method to optimize STBCs based on the outage probability at moderate SNRs.
Multilevel polar coded-modulation is a new class of coded-modulation techniques
that benefits from low complexity decoders and simple rate matching. In this
paper, we derive the outage optimality condition for multistage decoding and
propose a rule for determining component code rates. We also derive an upper
bound on the outage probability of STBCs for designing the
set-partitioning-based labelling. Finally, due to the optimality of the
outage-minimized STBCs for long codes, we introduce a novel method for the
joint optimization of short-to-moderate length polar codes and STBCs
Wireless industrial monitoring and control networks: the journey so far and the road ahead
While traditional wired communication technologies have played a crucial role in industrial monitoring and control networks over the past few decades, they are increasingly proving to be inadequate to meet the highly dynamic and stringent demands of today’s industrial applications, primarily due to the very rigid nature of wired infrastructures. Wireless technology, however, through its increased pervasiveness, has the potential to revolutionize the industry, not only by mitigating the problems faced by wired solutions, but also by introducing a completely new class of applications. While present day wireless technologies made some preliminary inroads in the monitoring domain, they still have severe limitations especially when real-time, reliable distributed control operations are concerned. This article provides the reader with an overview of existing wireless technologies commonly used in the monitoring and control industry. It highlights the pros and cons of each technology and assesses the degree to which each technology is able to meet the stringent demands of industrial monitoring and control networks. Additionally, it summarizes mechanisms proposed by academia, especially serving critical applications by addressing the real-time and reliability requirements of industrial process automation. The article also describes certain key research problems from the physical layer communication for sensor networks and the wireless networking perspective that have yet to be addressed to allow the successful use of wireless technologies in industrial monitoring and control networks
On Low-Resolution ADCs in Practical 5G Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems
Nowadays, millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO) systems is a favorable candidate for the fifth generation (5G) cellular
systems. However, a key challenge is the high power consumption imposed by its
numerous radio frequency (RF) chains, which may be mitigated by opting for
low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), whilst tolerating a
moderate performance loss. In this article, we discuss several important issues
based on the most recent research on mmWave massive MIMO systems relying on
low-resolution ADCs. We discuss the key transceiver design challenges including
channel estimation, signal detector, channel information feedback and transmit
precoding. Furthermore, we introduce a mixed-ADC architecture as an alternative
technique of improving the overall system performance. Finally, the associated
challenges and potential implementations of the practical 5G mmWave massive
MIMO system {with ADC quantizers} are discussed.Comment: to appear in IEEE Communications Magazin
Design and Performance Analysis of Non-Coherent Detection Systems with Massive Receiver Arrays
Harvesting the gain of a large number of antennas in a mmWave band has mainly
been relying on the costly operation of channel state information (CSI)
acquisition and cumbersome phase shifters. Recent works have started to
investigate the possibility to use receivers based on energy detection (ED),
where a single data stream is decoded based on the channel and noise energy.
The asymptotic features of the massive receiver array lead to a system where
the impact of the noise becomes predictable due to a noise hardening effect.
This in effect extends the communication range compared to the receiver with a
small number of antennas, as the latter is limited by the unpredictability of
the additive noise. When the channel has a large number of spatial degrees of
freedom, the system becomes robust to imperfect channel knowledge due to
channel hardening. We propose two detection methods based on the instantaneous
and average channel energy, respectively. Meanwhile, we design the detection
thresholds based on the asymptotic properties of the received energy.
Differently from existing works, we analyze the scaling law behavior of the
symbol-error-rate (SER). When the instantaneous channel energy is known, the
performance of ED approaches that of the coherent detection in high SNR
scenarios. When the receiver relies on the average channel energy, our
performance analysis is based on the exact SER, rather than an approximation.
It is shown that the logarithm of SER decreases linearly as a function of the
number of antennas. Additionally, a saturation appears at high SNR for PAM
constellations of order larger than two, due to the uncertainty on the channel
energy. Simulation results show that ED, with a much lower complexity, achieves
promising performance both in Rayleigh fading channels and in sparse channels
Decentralized Estimation over Orthogonal Multiple-access Fading Channels in Wireless Sensor Networks - Optimal and Suboptimal Estimators
Optimal and suboptimal decentralized estimators in wireless sensor networks
(WSNs) over orthogonal multiple-access fading channels are studied in this
paper. Considering multiple-bit quantization before digital transmission, we
develop maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) with both known and unknown
channel state information (CSI). When training symbols are available, we derive
a MLE that is a special case of the MLE with unknown CSI. It implicitly uses
the training symbols to estimate the channel coefficients and exploits the
estimated CSI in an optimal way. To reduce the computational complexity, we
propose suboptimal estimators. These estimators exploit both signal and data
level redundant information to improve the estimation performance. The proposed
MLEs reduce to traditional fusion based or diversity based estimators when
communications or observations are perfect. By introducing a general message
function, the proposed estimators can be applied when various analog or digital
transmission schemes are used. The simulations show that the estimators using
digital communications with multiple-bit quantization outperform the estimator
using analog-and-forwarding transmission in fading channels. When considering
the total bandwidth and energy constraints, the MLE using multiple-bit
quantization is superior to that using binary quantization at medium and high
observation signal-to-noise ratio levels
