    Delay-dependent stability of linear multi-step methods for linear neutral systems

    summary:In this paper, we are concerned with numerical methods for linear neutral systems with multiple delays. For delay-dependently stable neutral systems, we ask what conditions must be imposed on linear multi-step methods in order that the numerical solutions display stability property analogous to that displayed by the exact solutions. Combining with Lagrange interpolation, linear multi-step methods can be applied to the neutral systems. Utilizing the argument principle, a sufficient condition is derived for linear multi-step methods with preserving delay-dependent stability. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the main results

    Spectrum analysis of LTI continuous-time systems with constant delays: A literature overview of some recent results

    In recent decades, increasingly intensive research attention has been given to dynamical systems containing delays and those affected by the after-effect phenomenon. Such research covers a wide range of human activities and the solutions of related engineering problems often require interdisciplinary cooperation. The knowledge of the spectrum of these so-called time-delay systems (TDSs) is very crucial for the analysis of their dynamical properties, especially stability, periodicity, and dumping effect. A great volume of mathematical methods and techniques to analyze the spectrum of the TDSs have been developed and further applied in the most recent times. Although a broad family of nonlinear, stochastic, sampled-data, time-variant or time-varying-delay systems has been considered, the study of the most fundamental continuous linear time-invariant (LTI) TDSs with fixed delays is still the dominant research direction with ever-increasing new results and novel applications. This paper is primarily aimed at a (systematic) literature overview of recent (mostly published between 2013 to 2017) advances regarding the spectrum analysis of the LTI-TDSs. Specifically, a total of 137 collected articles-which are most closely related to the research area-are eventually reviewed.     p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda correlations studied via femtoscopy in pp reactions at root s=7 TeV

    We report on the first femtoscopic measurement of baryon pairs, such as p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda, measured by ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV. This study demonstrates the feasibility of such measurements in pp collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The femtoscopy method is employed to constrain the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions, which are still rather poorly understood. A new method to evaluate the influence of residual correlations induced by the decays of resonances and experimental impurities is hereby presented. The p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda correlation functions were fitted simultaneously with the help of a new tool developed specifically for the femtoscopy analysis in small colliding systems: Correlation Analysis Tool using the Schrodinger equation (CATS). Within the assumption that in pp collisions the three particle pairs originate from a common source, its radius is found to be equal to r(0) = 1.125 +/- 0.018 (stat)(-0.035)(+0.058) (syst) fm. The sensitivity of the measured p-Lambda correlation is tested against different scattering parameters, which are defined by the interaction among the two particles, but the statistics is not sufficient yet to discriminate among different models. The measurement of the Lambda-Lambda correlation function constrains the phase space spanned by the effective range and scattering length of the strong interaction. Discrepancies between the measured scattering parameters and the resulting correlation functions at LHC and RHIC energies are discussed in the context of various models.Peer reviewe

    Investigation of possible causes for human-performance degradation during microgravity flight

    The results of the first year of a three year study of the effects of microgravity on human performance are given. Test results show support for the hypothesis that the effects of microgravity can be studied indirectly on Earth by measuring performance in an altered gravitational field. The hypothesis was that an altered gravitational field could disrupt performance on previously automated behaviors if gravity was a critical part of the stimulus complex controlling those behaviors. In addition, it was proposed that performance on secondary cognitive tasks would also degrade, especially if the subject was provided feedback about degradation on the previously automated task. In the initial experimental test of these hypotheses, there was little statistical support. However, when subjects were categorized as high or low in automated behavior, results for the former group supported the hypotheses. The predicted interaction between body orientation and level of workload in their joint effect on performance in the secondary cognitive task was significant for the group high in automatized behavior and receiving feedback, but no such interventions were found for the group high in automatized behavior but not receiving feedback, or the group low in automatized behavior
