Gating sensory noise in a spiking subtractive LSTM
Spiking neural networks are being investigated both as biologically plausible models of neural computation and also as a potentially more efficient type of neural network. Recurrent neural networks in the form of networks of gating memory cells have been central in state-of-the-art solutions in problem domains that involve sequence recognition or generation. Here, we design an analog Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) cell where its neurons can be substituted with efficient spiking neurons, where we use subtractive gating (following the subLSTM in [1]) instead of multiplicative gating. Subtractive gating allows for a less sensitive gating mechanism, critical when using spiking neurons. By using fast adapting spiking neurons with a smoothed Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU)-like effective activation function, we show that then an accurate conversion from an analog subLSTM to a continuous-time spiking subLSTM is possible. This architecture results in memory networks that compute very efficiently, with low average firing rates comparable to those in biological neurons, while operating in continuous time
Tunable Neuromimetic Integrated System for Emulating Cortical Neuron Models
Nowadays, many software solutions are currently available for simulating neuron models. Less conventional than software-based systems, hardware-based solutions generally combine digital and analog forms of computation. In previous work, we designed several neuromimetic chips, including the Galway chip that we used for this paper. These silicon neurons are based on the Hodgkin–Huxley formalism and they are optimized for reproducing a large variety of neuron behaviors thanks to tunable parameters. Due to process variation and device mismatch in analog chips, we use a full-custom fitting method in voltage-clamp mode to tune our neuromimetic integrated circuits. By comparing them with experimental electrophysiological data of these cells, we show that the circuits can reproduce the main firing features of cortical cell types. In this paper, we present the experimental measurements of our system which mimic the four most prominent biological cells: fast spiking, regular spiking, intrinsically bursting, and low-threshold spiking neurons into analog neuromimetic integrated circuit dedicated to cortical neuron simulations. This hardware and software platform will allow to improve the hybrid technique, also called “dynamic-clamp,” that consists of connecting artificial and biological neurons to study the function of neuronal circuits
Memory and information processing in neuromorphic systems
A striking difference between brain-inspired neuromorphic processors and
current von Neumann processors architectures is the way in which memory and
processing is organized. As Information and Communication Technologies continue
to address the need for increased computational power through the increase of
cores within a digital processor, neuromorphic engineers and scientists can
complement this need by building processor architectures where memory is
distributed with the processing. In this paper we present a survey of
brain-inspired processor architectures that support models of cortical networks
and deep neural networks. These architectures range from serial clocked
implementations of multi-neuron systems to massively parallel asynchronous ones
and from purely digital systems to mixed analog/digital systems which implement
more biological-like models of neurons and synapses together with a suite of
adaptation and learning mechanisms analogous to the ones found in biological
nervous systems. We describe the advantages of the different approaches being
pursued and present the challenges that need to be addressed for building
artificial neural processing systems that can display the richness of behaviors

Adaptive motor control and learning in a spiking neural network realised on a mixed-signal neuromorphic processor
Neuromorphic computing is a new paradigm for design of both the computing
hardware and algorithms inspired by biological neural networks. The event-based
nature and the inherent parallelism make neuromorphic computing a promising
paradigm for building efficient neural network based architectures for control
of fast and agile robots. In this paper, we present a spiking neural network
architecture that uses sensory feedback to control rotational velocity of a
robotic vehicle. When the velocity reaches the target value, the mapping from
the target velocity of the vehicle to the correct motor command, both
represented in the spiking neural network on the neuromorphic device, is
autonomously stored on the device using on-chip plastic synaptic weights. We
validate the controller using a wheel motor of a miniature mobile vehicle and
inertia measurement unit as the sensory feedback and demonstrate online
learning of a simple 'inverse model' in a two-layer spiking neural network on
the neuromorphic chip. The prototype neuromorphic device that features 256
spiking neurons allows us to realise a simple proof of concept architecture for
the purely neuromorphic motor control and learning. The architecture can be

Optimizing the energy consumption of spiking neural networks for neuromorphic applications
In the last few years, spiking neural networks have been demonstrated to
perform on par with regular convolutional neural networks. Several works have
proposed methods to convert a pre-trained CNN to a Spiking CNN without a
significant sacrifice of performance. We demonstrate first that
quantization-aware training of CNNs leads to better accuracy in SNNs. One of
the benefits of converting CNNs to spiking CNNs is to leverage the sparse
computation of SNNs and consequently perform equivalent computation at a lower
energy consumption. Here we propose an efficient optimization strategy to train
spiking networks at lower energy consumption, while maintaining similar
accuracy levels. We demonstrate results on the MNIST-DVS and CIFAR-10 datasets
Principles of Neuromorphic Photonics
In an age overrun with information, the ability to process reams of data has
become crucial. The demand for data will continue to grow as smart gadgets
multiply and become increasingly integrated into our daily lives.
Next-generation industries in artificial intelligence services and
high-performance computing are so far supported by microelectronic platforms.
These data-intensive enterprises rely on continual improvements in hardware.
Their prospects are running up against a stark reality: conventional
one-size-fits-all solutions offered by digital electronics can no longer
satisfy this need, as Moore's law (exponential hardware scaling),
interconnection density, and the von Neumann architecture reach their limits.
With its superior speed and reconfigurability, analog photonics can provide
some relief to these problems; however, complex applications of analog
photonics have remained largely unexplored due to the absence of a robust
photonic integration industry. Recently, the landscape for
commercially-manufacturable photonic chips has been changing rapidly and now
promises to achieve economies of scale previously enjoyed solely by
microelectronics.
The scientific community has set out to build bridges between the domains of
photonic device physics and neural networks, giving rise to the field of
\emph{neuromorphic photonics}. This article reviews the recent progress in
integrated neuromorphic photonics. We provide an overview of neuromorphic
computing, discuss the associated technology (microelectronic and photonic)
platforms and compare their metric performance. We discuss photonic neural
network approaches and challenges for integrated neuromorphic photonic
processors while providing an in-depth description of photonic neurons and a
candidate interconnection architecture. We conclude with a future outlook of

Unsupervised Heart-rate Estimation in Wearables With Liquid States and A Probabilistic Readout
Heart-rate estimation is a fundamental feature of modern wearable devices. In
this paper we propose a machine intelligent approach for heart-rate estimation
from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected using wearable devices. The novelty
of our approach lies in (1) encoding spatio-temporal properties of ECG signals
directly into spike train and using this to excite recurrently connected
spiking neurons in a Liquid State Machine computation model; (2) a novel
learning algorithm; and (3) an intelligently designed unsupervised readout
based on Fuzzy c-Means clustering of spike responses from a subset of neurons
(Liquid states), selected using particle swarm optimization. Our approach
differs from existing works by learning directly from ECG signals (allowing
personalization), without requiring costly data annotations. Additionally, our
approach can be easily implemented on state-of-the-art spiking-based
neuromorphic systems, offering high accuracy, yet significantly low energy
footprint, leading to an extended battery life of wearable devices. We
validated our approach with CARLsim, a GPU accelerated spiking neural network
simulator modeling Izhikevich spiking neurons with Spike Timing Dependent
Plasticity (STDP) and homeostatic scaling. A range of subjects are considered
from in-house clinical trials and public ECG databases. Results show high
accuracy and low energy footprint in heart-rate estimation across subjects with
and without cardiac irregularities, signifying the strong potential of this

Storage of phase-coded patterns via STDP in fully-connected and sparse network: a study of the network capacity
We study the storage and retrieval of phase-coded patterns as stable
dynamical attractors in recurrent neural networks, for both an analog and a
integrate-and-fire spiking model. The synaptic strength is determined by a
learning rule based on spike-time-dependent plasticity, with an asymmetric time
window depending on the relative timing between pre- and post-synaptic
activity. We store multiple patterns and study the network capacity.
For the analog model, we find that the network capacity scales linearly with
the network size, and that both capacity and the oscillation frequency of the
retrieval state depend on the asymmetry of the learning time window. In
addition to fully-connected networks, we study sparse networks, where each
neuron is connected only to a small number z << N of other neurons. Connections
can be short range, between neighboring neurons placed on a regular lattice, or
long range, between randomly chosen pairs of neurons. We find that a small
fraction of long range connections is able to amplify the capacity of the
network. This imply that a small-world-network topology is optimal, as a
compromise between the cost of long range connections and the capacity
increase.
Also in the spiking integrate and fire model the crucial result of storing
and retrieval of multiple phase-coded patterns is observed. The capacity of the
