Understanding the Application and Benefits of Learning-based Methods in Nuclear Science and Engineering
Known as the fourth industrial revolution, digitization is an ongoing trend in all fields, in which various industries are integrating information technologies to support and improve their businesses. Nuclear technology industries have also increased their interest in data-driven methods by leveraging the potential of pattern recognition to identify anomalies and to take actions more rapidly, in areas such as health and monitoring, radiation detection, and optimization. By acknowledging the practicality and popularity of these methods, it is imperative to understand the benefits and barriers of implementing such methodologies to create better research plans and identify project risks and opportunities. This dissertation discusses different technologies and their integration and challenges within the nuclear industry. It is recognized that concepts of complexity and emergent behavior, as well as the importance of such properties as a distinctive aspect of nuclear and radiological engineering problems in which holistic approaches are crucial to innovation. Overall, the development and application of learning-based methods can be promising in the nuclear industry and many related tasks as long as expert knowledge is considered in the desired application to ensure a robust application of such methods. Cross-discipline studies and the creation of benchmarks are highly suggested for future practices
Nuclear Power
At the onset of the 21st century, we are searching for reliable and sustainable energy sources that have a potential to support growing economies developing at accelerated growth rates, technology advances improving quality of life and becoming available to larger and larger populations. The quest for robust sustainable energy supplies meeting the above constraints leads us to the nuclear power technology. Today's nuclear reactors are safe and highly efficient energy systems that offer electricity and a multitude of co-generation energy products ranging from potable water to heat for industrial applications. Catastrophic earthquake and tsunami events in Japan resulted in the nuclear accident that forced us to rethink our approach to nuclear safety, requirements and facilitated growing interests in designs, which can withstand natural disasters and avoid catastrophic consequences. This book is one in a series of books on nuclear power published by InTech. It consists of ten chapters on system simulations and operational aspects. Our book does not aim at a complete coverage or a broad range. Instead, the included chapters shine light at existing challenges, solutions and approaches. Authors hope to share ideas and findings so that new ideas and directions can potentially be developed focusing on operational characteristics of nuclear power plants. The consistent thread throughout all chapters is the "system-thinking" approach synthesizing provided information and ideas. The book targets everyone with interests in system simulations and nuclear power operational aspects as its potential readership groups - students, researchers and practitioners

Modeling Nuclear Reactor Core Dynamics with Recurrent Neural Networks
A recurrent multilayer perceptron (RMLP) model is designed and developed for simulation of core neutronic phenomena in a nuclear power plant, which constitute a non-linear, complex dynamic system characterized by a large number of state variables. Training and testing data are generated by REMARK, a first principles neutronic core model [16]. A modified backpropagation learning algorithm with an adaptive steepness factor is employed to speed up the training of the RMLP. The test results presented exhibit the capability of the recurrent neural network model to capture the complex dynamics of the system, yielding accurate predictions of the system response. The performance of the network is also demonstrated for interpolation, extrapolation, fault tolerance due to incomplete data, and for operation in the presence of noise. Keywords: Nuclear reactor core dynamics; recurrent neural networks 1 This work is supported by Maryland Industrial Partnerships and S3 Technologies under grants no. ..
