    The concept of consideration sets makes brand choice a two-step process. House-holds first construct a consideration set which not necessarily includes all available brands and conditional on this set they make a final choice. In this paper we put forward a parametric econometric model for this two-step process, where we take into account that consideration sets usually are not observed. It turns out that our model is an artificial neural network, where the consideration set corresponds with the hidden layer. We discuss representation, parameter estimation and inference.We illustrate our model for the choice between six detergent brands and show that the model improves upon a one-step multinomial logit model, in terms of fit and out-of-sample forecasting.brand choice;consideration set;artificial neural network

To do this, based on 2597 toothpaste purchases of a panel sample of 404 households, choice models are built and their performances are compared on the 861 purchases of a test sample of 135 households. Results show that ANN's predictions are better while MNP is useful in providing marketing insight

    Modeling brand choice using boosted and stacked neural networks

    The brand choice problem in marketing has recently been addressed with methods from computational intelligence such as neural networks. Another class of methods from computational intelligence, the so-called ensemble methods such as boosting and stacking have never been applied to the brand choice problem, as far as we know. Ensemble methods generate a number of models for the same problem using any base method and combine the outcomes of these different models. It is well known that in many cases the predictive performance of ensemble methods significantly exceeds the predictive performance of the their base methods. In this report we use boosting and stacking of neural networks and apply this to a scanner dataset that is a benchmark dataset in the marketing literature. Using these methods, we find a significant improvement in predictive performance on this dataset.

    MODELING FRESH TOMATO MARKETING MARGINS: ECONOMETRICS AND NEURAL NETWORKS

    This study compares two methods of estimating a reduced form model of fresh tomato marketing margins: an econometric and an artificial neural network (ANN) approach. Model performance is evaluated by comparing out-of-sample forecasts for the period of January 1992 to December 1994. Parameter estimates using the econometric model fail to reject a dynamic, imperfectly competitive, uncertain relative price spread margin specification, but misspecification tests reject both linearity and log-linearity. This nonlinearity suggests that an inherently nonlinear method, such as a neural network, may be of some value. The neural network is able to forecast with approximately half the mean square error of the econometric model, but both are equally adept at predicting turning points in the time series.Marketing,

    A new and efficient intelligent collaboration scheme for fashion design

    Technology-mediated collaboration process has been extensively studied for over a decade. Most applications with collaboration concepts reported in the literature focus on enhancing efficiency and effectiveness of the decision-making processes in objective and well-structured workflows. However, relatively few previous studies have investigated the applications of collaboration schemes to problems with subjective and unstructured nature. In this paper, we explore a new intelligent collaboration scheme for fashion design which, by nature, relies heavily on human judgment and creativity. Techniques such as multicriteria decision making, fuzzy logic, and artificial neural network (ANN) models are employed. Industrial data sets are used for the analysis. Our experimental results suggest that the proposed scheme exhibits significant improvement over the traditional method in terms of the time–cost effectiveness, and a company interview with design professionals has confirmed its effectiveness and significance
