On adaptive frequency hopping to combat coexistence interference between bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b with practical resource constraints
In contrast to traditional frequency hopping techniques, Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH) is a low cost and low power solution to avoid interference dynamically. While each AFH algorithm proposed previously is shown to be efficient, a detailed performance analysis of various AFH mechanisms under realistic resource constraints is yet to be done. In particular, based on our performance study on Bluetooth systems presented in this paper, we have found that the AFH mechanism adopted by IEEE 802.15 Task Group 2 (TG2) is very sensitive to memory and power limitations. We then propose a novel Interference Source Oriented Adaptive Frequency Hopping (ISOAFH) approach based on a cross-layer design, in which the baseband layer of Bluetooth considers not only the instantaneous channels condition but also the physical layer transmission characteristics of potential interference sources in determining the hop sequence. In our simulations using detailed MATLAB Simulink modeling, we find that our proposed method is much more robust in that it is insensitive to memory and energy constraints. Detailed examination of a packet collision model for Bluetooth Low Energy advertising mode
The aim of this paper is to investigate the amount of energy that is required to successfully transmit information inside the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising packets. There are applications that require more than one BLE node to simultaneously transmit data. The BLE protocol utilizes a specific communication method termed advertising mode to perform unidirectional broadcasts of data from the advertising devices. However, with an increased number of BLE devices advertising simultaneously, there will be inevitable packet collisions from the advertising devices. This results in a waste of energy, specifically in low-power applications where lower consumption is desirable to minimize the need for battery replacements. This paper examines a packet collision model for the BLE advertising mode with the results validated using experimental data. Our analysis shows that when the throughput of the BLE network starts to fall due to an increase in the number of packet collisions, the energy consumption of the BLE nodes increase exponentially with respect to the number of nodes
Modeling Hidden Nodes Collisions in Wireless Sensor Networks: Analysis Approach
This paper studied both types of collisions. In this paper, we show that advocated solutions for coping with hidden node collisions are unsuitable for sensor networks. We model both types of collisions and derive closed-form formula giving the probability of hidden and visible node collisions. To reduce these collisions, we propose two solutions. The first one based on tuning the carrier sense threshold saves a substantial amount of collisions by reducing the number of hidden nodes. The second one based on adjusting the contention window size is complementary to the first one. It reduces the probability of overlapping transmissions, which reduces both collisions due to hidden and visible nodes. We validate and evaluate the performance of these solutions through simulations
Technologies and solutions for location-based services in smart cities: past, present, and future
Location-based services (LBS) in smart cities have drastically altered the way cities operate, giving a new dimension to the life of citizens. LBS rely on location of a device, where proximity estimation remains at its core. The applications of LBS range from social networking and marketing to vehicle-toeverything communications. In many of these applications, there is an increasing need and trend to learn the physical distance between nearby devices. This paper elaborates upon the current needs of proximity estimation in LBS and compares them against the available Localization and Proximity (LP) finding technologies (LP technologies in short). These technologies are compared for their accuracies and performance based on various different parameters, including latency, energy consumption, security, complexity, and throughput. Hereafter, a classification of these technologies, based on various different smart city applications, is presented. Finally, we discuss some emerging LP technologies that enable proximity estimation in LBS and present some future research areas
Wearable Communications in 5G: Challenges and Enabling Technologies
As wearable devices become more ingrained in our daily lives, traditional
communication networks primarily designed for human being-oriented applications
are facing tremendous challenges. The upcoming 5G wireless system aims to
support unprecedented high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity. In
this article, we evaluate key challenges in wearable communications. A
cloud/edge communication architecture that integrates the cloud radio access
network, software defined network, device to device communications, and
cloud/edge technologies is presented. Computation offloading enabled by this
multi-layer communications architecture can offload computation-excessive and
latency-stringent applications to nearby devices through device to device
communications or to nearby edge nodes through cellular or other wireless
technologies. Critical issues faced by wearable communications such as short
battery life, limited computing capability, and stringent latency can be
greatly alleviated by this cloud/edge architecture. Together with the presented
architecture, current transmission and networking technologies, including
non-orthogonal multiple access, mobile edge computing, and energy harvesting,
can greatly enhance the performance of wearable communication in terms of
