    On the equivalent ZIP parameter extraction of desktop computer cases and LCD monitors connected in parallel

    Constant-impedance, constant-current and constant-power ZIP models of electrical loads arecommonly used in smart grid and residential load applications. Some of residential loads are ofnonlinear nature such as LCD monitors and computers. In this study, first, equivalent ZIP modelformulas of parallel-connected electrical loads are derived. Then, the ZIP models of an LCDmonitor, a computer case and the computer case and the monitor connected in parallel have beenobtained using experimental data and least-squares curve fitting method. Finally, the equivalentZIP model formulas are tested with the experimental data. It has been found that for the rectifiernonlinear loads with different ZIP parameters, the formulas do not give acceptable errors.Therefore, for rectifier nonlinear loads, the measurement-based approach for load modeling mustbe performed

    Effect of electrical vehicles on residential distribution systems

    This thesis focuses on the present state of electrical vehicles (EVs) in the market and the effects that these vehicles could have on residential distribution systems. The current EVs available on the market and the current level of market penetration were investigated. Advantages and disadvantages of EVs from a consumer and governmental perspective were identified. The efficiencies of the whole energy delivery process of electrical vehicles and gasoline vehicles were estimated. Efficiency estimation was used to estimate the impact of EVs on the consumption of fossil fuels and emission of greenhouse gases. Measurement of an EV battery charging cycle and modeling of a residential power system with EV battery charger loads was performed. A computer model was programmed in Matlab to perform harmonic analysis using data from a real residential system. Using this computer model a worst case study was performed, and the level of EV penetration in the system required to cause excessive harmonic distortion was obtained

The mini quadrotor UAV is intended to use in several areas such as camera-based air-surveillance, traffic control, environmental measurements, etc. The paper focuses upon the embedded microcomputer-based implementation of the mini UAV, describes the elements of the implementation, the tools realized for mathematical model building, as well as obtains a brief outline of the control design

    This work presents a novel representation of energy and signal transformation in a measurement system, which is essentially a transducer conversion logic or language (TCL). Using two-port and three-port transducers as basic building blocks, it can be utilized to model any measurement system. It has the key features of object-orientation and consists of only text with very simple syntax. The TCL can be easily handled and processed by computers. This paper has demonstrated its use in description, classification, and computer-aided analysis and design of measuring instruments with some preliminary test results. It will find wide applications in modeling, analysis, design, and education in measurement, control, and information processing

    Wave techniques for noise modeling and measurement

    The noise wave approach is applied to analysis, modeling, and measurement applications. Methods are presented for the calculation of component and network noise wave correlation matrices. Embedding calculations, relations to two-port figures-of-merit, and transformations to traditional representations are discussed. Simple expressions are derived for MESFET and HEMT noise wave parameters based on a linear equivalent circuit. A noise wave measurement technique is presented and experimentally compared with the conventional method

    GREEND: An Energy Consumption Dataset of Households in Italy and Austria

    Home energy management systems can be used to monitor and optimize consumption and local production from renewable energy. To assess solutions before their deployment, researchers and designers of those systems demand for energy consumption datasets. In this paper, we present the GREEND dataset, containing detailed power usage information obtained through a measurement campaign in households in Austria and Italy. We provide a description of consumption scenarios and discuss design choices for the sensing infrastructure. Finally, we benchmark the dataset with state-of-the-art techniques in load disaggregation, occupancy detection and appliance usage mining

    Computing server power modeling in a data center: survey,taxonomy and performance evaluation

    Data centers are large scale, energy-hungry infrastructure serving the increasing computational demands as the world is becoming more connected in smart cities. The emergence of advanced technologies such as cloud-based services, internet of things (IoT) and big data analytics has augmented the growth of global data centers, leading to high energy consumption. This upsurge in energy consumption of the data centers not only incurs the issue of surging high cost (operational and maintenance) but also has an adverse effect on the environment. Dynamic power management in a data center environment requires the cognizance of the correlation between the system and hardware level performance counters and the power consumption. Power consumption modeling exhibits this correlation and is crucial in designing energy-efficient optimization strategies based on resource utilization. Several works in power modeling are proposed and used in the literature. However, these power models have been evaluated using different benchmarking applications, power measurement techniques and error calculation formula on different machines. In this work, we present a taxonomy and evaluation of 24 software-based power models using a unified environment, benchmarking applications, power measurement technique and error formula, with the aim of achieving an objective comparison. We use different servers architectures to assess the impact of heterogeneity on the models' comparison. The performance analysis of these models is elaborated in the paper

    A Holistic Investigation on Terahertz Propagation and Channel Modeling Toward Vertical Heterogeneous Networks

    User-centric and low latency communications can be enabled not only by small cells but also through ubiquitous connectivity. Recently, the vertical heterogeneous network (V-HetNet) architecture is proposed to backhaul/fronthaul a large number of small cells. Like an orchestra, the V-HetNet is a polyphony of different communication ensembles, including geostationary orbit (GEO), and low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites (e.g., CubeSats), and networked flying platforms (NFPs) along with terrestrial communication links. In this study, we propose the Terahertz (THz) communications to enable the elements of V-HetNets to function in harmony. As THz links offer a large bandwidth, leading to ultra-high data rates, it is suitable for backhauling and fronthauling small cells. Furthermore, THz communications can support numerous applications from inter-satellite links to in-vivo nanonetworks. However, to savor this harmony, we need accurate channel models. In this paper, the insights obtained through our measurement campaigns are highlighted, to reveal the true potential of THz communications in V-HetNets.Comment: It has been accepted for the publication in IEEE Communications Magazin
