    Design Change Model for Effective Scheduling Change Propagation Paths

    Changes in requirements may result in the increasing of product development project cost and lead time, therefore, it is important to understand how requirement changes propagate in the design of complex product systems and be able to select best options to guide design. Currently, a most approach for design change is lack of take the multi-disciplinary coupling relationships and the number of parameters into account integrally. A new design change model is presented to systematically analyze and search change propagation paths. Firstly, a PDS-Behavior-Structure-based design change model is established to describe requirement changes causing the design change propagation in behavior and structure domains. Secondly, a multi-disciplinary oriented behavior matrix is utilized to support change propagation analysis of complex product systems, and the interaction relationships of the matrix elements are used to obtain an initial set of change paths. Finally, a rough set-based propagation space reducing tool is developed to assist in narrowing change propagation paths by computing the importance of the design change parameters. The proposed new design change model and its associated tools have been demonstrated by the scheduling change propagation paths of high speed train’s bogie to show its feasibility and effectiveness. This model is not only supportive to response quickly to diversified market requirements, but also helpful to satisfy customer requirements and reduce product development lead time. The proposed new design change model can be applied in a wide range of engineering systems design with improved efficiency

This work makes possible to propose a typology to adapt the product offer model to services

    An ontology-based approach for integrating engineering workflows for industrial assembly automation systems

    Modern manufacturing organisations face a number of external challenges as the customer-base is more varied, more knowledgeable, and has a broader range of requirements. This has given rise to paradigms such as mass customisation and product personalisation. Internally, businesses must manage multidisciplinary teams that must work together to achieve a common goal despite spanning multiple domains, organisations, and due to improved communication technologies, countries. The motivation for this research is to therefore understand firstly how the multiplicity of stakeholders come together to realise the ever increasing and ever more complex number of product variants that manufacturing systems must now realise. The lack of integration of engineering tools and methods is identified to be one of the barriers to smooth engineering workflows and thus one of the key challenges faced in the current dynamic market. To address this problem, this research builds upon previous works that propose domain ontologies for representing knowledge in a way that is both machine and human readable, facilitating interoperability between engineering software. In addition to this, the research develops a novel Skill model that brings the domain ontologies into a practical, implementable framework that complements existing industrial workflows. The focus of this thesis is the domain of industrial assembly automation systems due to the role this stage of manufacturing plays in realising product variety. Therefore, the proposed ontological models and framework are applied to product assembly scenarios. The key contributions of this work are the consolidation of domain ontologies with a Skill model within the context of assembly systems engineering, development of a broader framework for the ontologies to sit within that complements existing workflows. In addition, the research demonstrates how the framework can be applied to connect assembly process planning activities with machine control logic to identify and rectify inconsistencies as new products are introduced. In summary, the thesis identifies the shortcomings of existing ontological models within the context of manufacturing, develops new models to address those shortcoming, and develops new, useful ways for ontological models to be used to address industrial problems by integrating them with virtual engineering tools

    Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production

    Global pandemics, devastating wars and natural disasters with increasing frequency and impact are disrupting previously carefully balanced manufacturing networks. All industrial companies are required to examine their operations and adjust accordingly. The increasing cost of resources require enterprises to re-design their value creation processes to be more sustainable, to optimize the supplier network to become more resilient and to accelerate digitizing of operations to enhance operational effectiveness. This year's WGAB research seminar is themed around Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production and seeks to contribute solutions to the current challenges. The scientific discourse aims to advance the sustainable and data-based organization of value creation processes. Exemplary efforts for the sustainable production of 3D printed footwear and the circular supply chain of energy production will be discussed. With advances in sensory data collection in cyber-physical production systems (CPPS), there are new opportunities for sensing the status of manufacturing systems, which enable advanced data analytics to contribute to a sustainable production. Intelligent processes enable sustainable value creation and bi-directional knowledge exchange between humans and machines. With people at the centre of the CPPS, production systems shall be both adaptive and personalized for every worker. People need to be involved in the technological and organizational changes. Simulating the migration from a linear economy to a circular economy supports the trend of regionalized production networks. Digital assistance systems are tested to back up resilient manufacturing.     An object-oriented modelling method for evolving the hybrid vehicle design space in a systems engineering environment

    A combination of environmental awareness, consumer demands and pressure from legislators has led automotive manufacturers to seek for more environmentally friendly alternatives while still meeting the quality, performance and price demands of their customers. This has led to many complex powertrain designs being developed in order to produce vehicles with reduced carbon emissions. In particular, within the last decade most of the major automotive manufactures have either developed or announced plans to develop one or more hybrid vehicle models. This means that to be competitive and o er the best HEV solutions to customers, manufacturers have to assess a multitude of complex design choices in the most e cient way possible. Even though the automotive industry is adept at dealing with the many complexities of modern vehicle development; the magnitude of design choices, the cross coupling of multiple domains, the evolving technologies and the relative lack of experience with respect to conventional vehicle development compounds the complexities within the HEV design space. In order to meet the needs of e cient and exible HEV powertrain modelling within this design space, a parallel is drawn with the development of complex software systems. This parallel is both from a programmatic viewpoint where object-oriented techniques can be used for physical model development with new equation oriented modelling environments, and from a systems methodology perspective where the development approach encourages incremental development in order to minimize risk. This Thesis proposes a modelling method that makes use of these new tools to apply OOM principles to the design and development of HEV powertrain models. Furthermore, it is argued that together with an appropriate systems engineering approach within which the model development activities will occur, the proposed method can provide a more exible and manageable manner of exploring the HEV design space.The exibility of the modelling method is shown by means of two separate case studies, where a hierarchical library of extendable and replaceable models is developed in order to model the di erent powertrains. Ultimately the proposed method leads to an intuitive manner of developing a complex system model through abstraction and incremental development of the abstracted subsystems. Having said this, the correct management of such an e ort within the automotive industry is key for ensuring the reusability of models through enforced procedures for structuring, maintaining, controlling, documenting and protecting the model development. Further, in order to integrate the new methodology into the existing systems and practices it is imperative to develop an e cient means of sharing information between all stakeholders involved.     Formal Digital Description of Production Equipment Modules for supporting System Design and Deployment

    The requirements for production systems are moving towards higher flexibility, adaptability and reactivity. Increasing volatility in global and local economies, shorter product life cycles and the ever-increasing number of product variants arising from product customization have led to a demand for production systems which can respond more rapidly to these changing requirements. Therefore, whenever a new product, or product variant, enters production, the production system designer must be able to create an easily-reconfigurable production system which not only meets the User Requirements (UR) but is quick and cost-efficient to set up. Modern production systems must be able to integrate new product variants with minimum effort. In the event of a product changeover or an unforeseen incident, such as the mechanical failure of a production resource, it must be possible to reconfigure the production system smoothly and seamlessly by adding, removing or altering the resources. Ideally, auto-configuration should obviate the need to manually re-programme the system once it has been reconfigured.The cornerstone of any solution to the above-mentioned challenges is the concept of being able to create formalised, comprehensive descriptions of all production resources. Providing universally-recognised digital representations of all the multifarious resources used in a production system would enable a standardised exchange of information between the different actors involved in building a new production system. Such freely available and machine-readable information could also be utilised by the wide variety of software tools that come into play during the different life cycle phases of a production system, thus considerably extending its useful life. These digital descriptions would also offer a multi-faceted foundation for the reconfiguration of production systems. The production paradigms presented here would support state-of-the-art production systems, such as Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMSs), Holonic Manufacturing Systems (HMSs) and Evolvable Production Systems (EPSs).The methodological framework for this research is Design Research Methodology (DRM) supported with Systems Engineering, Action Research, and case-based research. The first two were used to develop the concept and data models for the resource descriptions, through a process of iterative development. The case-based research was used for verification, through the modelling and analysis of two separate production systems used in this research. The concept, on which this thesis is based, is itself based on the triplicity of production system design, i.e. Product, Process and Resource. The processes, are implemented through the capabilities of the resources, which are thus directly linked to the product requirements. The driving force behind this new approach to production system design is its strong emphasis on making production systems that can be reconfigured easily. Successful system reconfiguration can only be achieved, however, if all the required production resources can be quickly and easily compared to all the available production resources in one unified, and universally accepted form. These descriptions must not only be able to capture all of a production system’s capabilities, but must also include information about its interfaces, kinematics, technical properties and its control and communication abilities.The answer to this lies in the Emplacement Concept, which is described and developed in this thesis. The Emplacement Concept proposes the creation of a multi-layered Generic Model containing information about production resources in three different layers. These are the Abstract Module Description (AMD), the Module Description (MD), and the Module Instance Description (MID). Each of these layers has unique characteristics which can be utilised in the different phases of designing, commissioning and reconfiguring a production system. The AMD is the most abstract (general) descriptive layer and can be used for initial system design iterations. It ensures that the proposed resources for the production system are exchangeable and interchangeable, and thus guides the selection of production resources and the implementation (or reconfiguration) of a production system. The MD is the next level down, and provides a more detailed description of the type of production resource, providing ’finer granularity’ for the descriptions. The MID provides the finest level of granularity and contains invaluable information about the individual instances of a particular production resource. This research involves two practical implementations of the Generic Model. These are used to model and digitally represent all the production resources used in the two use-case environments. All the modules in the production systems (25 in all) were modelled and described with the data models developed here. In fact, we were able to freeze the data models after the first case study, as they didn’t need any major changes in order to model the production resources of the second use-case environment. This demonstrates the general applicability of the proposed approach for modelling modular production resources.The advantages of being able to describe production resources in a unified digital form are many and varied. For example, production systems which are described in this way are much more agile. They can react faster to changes in demand and can be reconfigured easily and quickly. The resource descriptions also improve the sustainability of production systems because they provide detailed information about the exact capabilities and characteristics of all the available resources. This means that production system designers are better placed to utilise ready-made modules, (design by re-use). Being able to use readily available production modules means that the Time to Market and Time to Volume are improved, as new production systems can be built or reconfigured using tested and fully operational modules, which can easily be integrated into an already operational production system. Finally, the resource descriptions are an essential source of information for auto-configuration tools, allowing automated, or semi-automated production system design. However, harvesting the full benefits of all these outcomes requires that the tools used to create new production systems can understand and utilise the modular descriptions proposed by this concept. This, in turn, presupposes that the all the formalised descriptions of the production modules provided here will be made publicly available, and will form the basis for an ever-expanding library of such descriptions

    A Model-Based Systems Engineering Methodology to Support Early Phase Australian Off-the-Shelf Naval Ship Acquisitions

    A significant capability modernisation program and a wide-ranging review of Defence has meant that Australian naval ship acquisitions are now being undertaken with both increasing pace and increasing oversight. This comes at a time when naval ship acquisition has also swung away from the top-down approach of designing a ship to meet unique Australian requirements, to the strong preference to use off-the-shelf (OTS) ship designs from overseas. This situation creates a need for new approaches to support stakeholders with naval ship concept definition and acquisition methodologies (which include methods, tools, techniques, and processes) that can develop robust, defensible business cases for milestone decisions by government. This thesis addresses this important need through the construction of a structured Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology that combines ship design aspects with technical and trade-off analyses to enable evidence-based decision making by Defence and government on the preferred technical solution to a capability need. The research utilised the Constructive Research Approach to produce an artefact, the Middle-out Early-phase Above-the-line Naval Ship (MEANS) MBSE methodology. The methodology is focused on the Risk Mitigation and Requirements Setting Phase (early conceptual design) in the Australian Defence capability lifecycle as this is the key stage in determining the outcome of an acquisition project. Specifically, the MEANS MBSE methodology supports requirements definition through a concept and requirements exploration approach. This approach facilitates the definition of traceable, defensible requirements based on top-down requirements analysis and design space exploration, combined with a bottom-up market survey of the existing naval ship design space. Furthermore, the MEANS MBSE methodology uses multi-criteria decision making to provide robust evaluation of candidate OTS naval ship design options to select the preferred solution and identify design weaknesses, or relative deficiencies in each design. The MEANS MBSE methodology encourages design to take place in the modelling environment (as opposed to simply recording the design) and supports iterative “what-if” solution option analysis to evaluate proposed design changes. The research produced a validated, exemplar MBSE methodology, and a body of work on early-stage ship design approaches that together have much to offer Australian Defence for future ship acquisitions. Specifically, it extended the use of MBSE to establish, manage and guide early stage design and analysis activities, whilst simultaneously maintaining traceability to Defence strategic guidance and capability needs. This extension allows capability development stakeholders to demonstrate the links between strategy, design activities, and requirements definition, thereby making ‘contestability’ and Systems Engineering rigour inherent in the specification of the required naval ship. The novelty of the research arises from the novel synthesis of several proven system design and analysis methods into a bespoke MBSE methodology that provides unique functionality and assistance to ship acquisition stakeholders.
