    Network Abstractions for Simplifying Mobile Application Development

    Context-aware computing is characterized by the ability of a software system to continuously adapt its behavior to a changing environment over which it has little or no control. This style of interaction is imperative in ad hoc mobile networks that consist of numerous mobile hosts coordinating with each other opportunistically via transient wireless interconnections. In this paper, we provide a formal abstract characterization of a host’s context that extends to encompass a neighborhood within the ad hoc network. We provide an application in an ad hoc network a specification mechanism for defining such contexts that allows individual applications to tailor their operating contexts to their personalized needs. We describe a context maintenance protocol that provides this context abstraction in ad hoc networks through continuous evaluation of the context. This relieves the application developer of the obligation of explicitly managing mobility and its implications on behavior. The software engineering gains resulting from the use of this abstraction are measured through its expressiveness and simplicity of use. We also characterize the performance of this protocol in real ad hoc networks through simulation experiments. Finally, we describe an initial implementation of the abstraction and provide real world application examples demonstrating its use

    Secure Sharing of Tuple Spaces in Ad Hoc Settings

    AbstractSecurity is emerging as a growing concern throughout the distributed computing community. Typical solutions entail specialized infrastructure support for authentication, encryption and access control. Mobile applications executing over ad hoc wireless networks present designers with a rather distinct set of security requirements. A totally open setting and limited resources call for lightweight and highly decentralized security solutions. In this paper we propose an approach that relies on extending an existing coordination middleware for mobility (Lime). The need to continue to offer a very simple model of coordination that assures rapid software development led to limiting extensions solely to password protected tuple spaces and per tuple access control. Password distribution and security are relegated to the application realm. Host level security is ensured by the middleware design and relies on standard support provided by the Java system. Secure interactions among agents across hosts are accomplished by careful exploitation of the interceptor pattern and the use of standard encryption. The paper explains the design strategy used to add security support in Lime and its implications for the development of mobile applications over ad hoc networks

    An Improvement in Stability of MANET using Flow Admission Control Algorithm

    An ad hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile hosts forming a temporary network without the aid of any centralized administration or standard support services. However flows transported across mobile ad hoc wireless networks suffer from route breakups caused by nodal mobility. In a network that aims to support critical interactive real-time data transactions, to provide for the uninterrupted execution of a transaction, or for the rapid transport of a high value file, it is essential to identify stable routes across which such transactions are transported. Noting that route failures can induce long re-routing delays that may be highly interruptive for many applications and message/stream transactions, it is beneficial to configure the routing scheme to send a flow across a route whose lifetime is longer, with sufficiently high probability, than the estimated duration of the activity that it is selected to carry. We evaluate the ability of a mobile ad hoc wireless network to distribute flows across routes which is sufficiently stable for successful transmission. As a special case, for certain applications only transactions that are completed without being prematurely interrupted may convey data to their intended users that is of acceptable utility. We describe the mathematical calculation of a network’s stable throughput measure, as well as its stable throughput capacity. We proposed the stable throughput and flow admission control routing algorithm (SFAR) to provide for the timely and stable transport of flow transactions across mobile ad hoc wireless network systems

    Spatial Multipath Location Aided Routing

    Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are infrastructure-free networks of mobile nodes that communicate with each other wirelessly. There are several routing schemes that have been proposed and several of these have been already extensively simulated or implemented as well. The primary applications of such networks have been in disaster relief operations, military use, conferencing and environment sensing. There are several ad hoc routing algorithms at present that utilize position information (usually in two dimensional terms) to make routing decisions at each node. Our goal is to utilize three-dimensional (3D) position information to provide more reliable as well as efficient routing for certain applications. We thus describe extensions to various location aware routing algorithms to work in 3D. We propose a new hierarchical, zone-based 3D routing algorithm, based on GRID by Liao, Tseng and Sheu. Our new algorithm called Hyper-GRID is a hybrid algorithm that uses multipath routing (alternate path caching) in 3D. We propose replacing LAR with Multipath LAR (MLAR) in GRID. We have implemented MLAR and are validating MLAR through simulation using ns-2 and studying its efficiency, scalability and other properties. We use a random waypoint mobility model and compare our MLAR approach versus LAR, AODV and AOMDV in both 2D and 3D for a range of traffic and mobility scenarios. Our simulation results demonstrate the performance benefits of MLAR over LAR and AODV in most mobility situations. AOMDV delivers more packets than MLAR consistently, but does so at the cost of more frequent flooding of control packets and thus higher bandwidth usage than MLAR

    Mobile ad hoc networks for intelligent systems

    Advances in wireless technology and portable computing along with demands for high user mobility have provided a major promotion toward the development of ad hoc networks. Mobile ad hoc networks feature dynamic topology, self-organization, limited bandwidth and battery power of a node. They do not rely on specialized routers for path discovery and traffic routing. Research on ad hoc networks has been extensively investigated in the past few years and related work has focused on many of the layers of the communications architecture. This research intends to investigate applications of MANET for intelligent systems, including intelligent transportation system (ITS), sensor network and mobile intelligent robot network, and propose some approaches to topology management, link layer multiple access and routing algorithms. Their performance is evaluated by theoretical analysis and off-the-shelf simulation tools. Most current research on ad hoc networks assumes the availability of IEEE 802.11. However, the RTS/CTS protocol of 802.11 still leads to packet collision which in turn decreases the network throughput and lifetime. For sensor networks, sensors are mostly battery operated. Hence, resolving packet collision may improve network lifetime by saving valuable power. Using space and network diversity combination, this work proposes a new packet separation approach to packet collision caused by masked nodes. Inter-vehicle communication is a key component of ITS and it is also called vehicular ad hoc network. VANET has many features different from regular MANETs in terms of mobility, network size and connectivity. Given rapid topology changes and network partitioning, this work studies how to organize the numerous vehicular nodes and establish message paths between any pair of vehicular nodes if they are not apart too far away. In urban areas, the inter-vehicle communication has different requirements and constraints than highway environments. The proposed position-based routing strategy for VANETs utilizes the traffic pattern in city environments. Packets are forwarded based on traffic lights timing sequence and the moving direction of relaying vehicles. A multicast protocol is also introduced to visualize the real time road traffic with customized scale. Only vehicles related to a source node\u27s planned trajectory will reply the query packet. The visualized real time traffic information therefore helps the driver make better decision in route planning when traffic congestion happens. Nowadays robots become more and more powerful and intelligent. They can take part in operations in a cooperative manner which makes distributed control necessary. Ad hoc robot communication network is still fresh field for researchers working on networking technology.     Swarm intelligence and its applications to wireless ad hoc and sensor networks.

    Swarm intelligence, as inspired by natural biological swarms, has numerous powerful properties for distributed problem solving in complex real world applications such as optimisation and control. Swarm intelligence properties can be found in natural systems such as ants, bees and birds, whereby the collective behaviour of unsophisticated agents interact locally with their environment to explore collective problem solving without centralised control. Recent advances in wireless communication and digital electronics have instigated important changes in distributed computing. Pervasive computing environments have emerged, such as large scale communication networks and wireless ad hoc and sensor networks that are extremely dynamic and unreliable. The network management and control must be based on distributed principles where centralised approaches may not be suitable for exploiting the enormous potential of these environments. In this thesis, we focus on applying swarm intelligence to the wireless ad hoc and sensor networks optimisation and control problems. Firstly, an analysis of the recently proposed particle swarm optimisation, which is based on the swarm intelligence techniques, is presented. Previous stability analysis of the particle swarm optimisation was restricted to the assumption that all of the parameters are non random since the theoretical analysis with the random parameters is difficult. We analyse the stability of the particle dynamics without these restrictive assumptions using Lyapunov stability and passive systems concepts. The particle swarm optimisation is then used to solve the sink node placement problem in sensor networks. Secondly, swarm intelligence based routing methods for mobile ad hoc networks are investigated. Two protocols have been proposed based on the foraging behaviour of biological ants and implemented in the NS2 network simulator. The first protocol allows each node in the network to choose the next node for packets to be forwarded on the basis of mobility influenced routing table. Since mobility is one of the most important factors for route changes in mobile ad hoc networks, the mobility of the neighbour node using HELLO packets is predicted and then translated into a pheromone decay as found in natural biological systems. The second protocol uses the same mechanism as the first, but instead of mobility the neighbour node remaining energy level and its drain rate are used. The thesis clearly shows that swarm intelligence methods have a very useful role to play in the management and control iv problems associated with wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. This thesis has given a number of example applications and has demonstrated its usefulness in improving performance over other existing methods

    A Fuzzy Based Distributed Algorithm for Maintaining Connected Network Topology in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks Considering Freeway Mobility Model

    Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) present real-time embedded system that is being used in a wide variety of applications where traditional networking infrastructure is practically infeasible. The highly dynamic character of a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) poses significant challenges on network communications. Previous work on MANET has resulted in numerous routing protocols aiming to maintain network connectivity among the active nodes. This paper presents a fuzzy-based distributed algorithm to maintain connected MANET considering freeway mobility model. According to the algorithm, each node will control itself in a way that it can maintain its connectivity with other nodes. In this approach each node is enabled with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. Through GPS each and every node is getting its position and velocity. After getting the information all the nodes in a network transmit their position and velocity information periodically. Obtaining information from all other nodes, each node will decide its own velocity to maintain connectivity. Moreover, faults to a particular node have also been considered in this algorithm. Results obtained through simulation studies show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm

    Reducing energy consumption in mobile ad-hoc sensor networks

    PhD ThesisRecent rapid development of wireless communication technologies and portable mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones and wireless sensors bring the best out of mobile computing, particularly Mobile Ad-hoc Sensor Networks (MASNETs). MASNETs are types of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) that are designed to consider energy in mind because they have severe resource constraints due to their lack of processing power, limited memory, and bandwidth as in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Hence, they have the characteristics, requirements, and limitations of both MANETs and WSNs. There are many potential applications of MASNETs such as a real-time target tracking and an ocean temperature monitoring. In these applications, mobility is the fundamental characteristic of the sensor nodes, and it poses many challenges to the routing algorithm. One of the greatest challenge is to provide a routing algorithm that is capable of dynamically changing its topology in the mobile environment with minimal consumption of energy. In MASNETs, the main reason of the topology change is because of the movement of mobile sensor nodes and not the node failure due to energy depletion. Since these sensor nodes are limited in power supply and have low radio frequency coverage, they easily lose their connection with neighbours, and face diffi culties in updating their routing tables. The switching process from one coverage area to another consumes more energy. This network must be able to adaptively alter the routing paths to minimize the effects of variable wireless link quality, topological changes, and transmission power levels on energy consumption of the network. Hence, nodes prefer to use as little transmission power as necessary and transmit control packets as infrequently as possible in energy constrained MASNETs. Therefore, in this thesis we propose a new dynamic energy-aware routing algorithm based on the trans- mission power control (TPC). This method effectively decreases the average percentage of packet loss and reduces the average total energy consumption which indirectly pro- long the network lifetime of MASNETs. To validate the proposed protocol, we ran the simulation on the Avrora simulator and varied speed, density, and route update interval of mobile nodes.     ENERGY CONSERVATION FOR WIRELESS AD HOC ROUTING

    Self-configuring wireless ad hoc networks have attracted considerable attention in the last few years due to their valuable civil and military applications. One aspect of such networks that has been studied insufficiently is the energy efficiency. Energy efficiency is crucial to prolong the network lifetime and thus make the network more survivable.Nodes in wireless ad hoc networks are most likely to be driven by battery and hence operate on an extremely frugal energy budget. Conventional ad hoc routing protocols are focused on handling the mobility instead of energy efficiency. Energy efficient routing strategies proposed in literature either do not take advantage of sleep modes to conserve energy more efficiently, or incur much overhead in terms of control message and computing complexity to schedule sleep modes and thus are not scalable.In this dissertation, a novel strategy is proposed to manage the sleep of the nodes in the network so that energy can be conserved and network connectivity can be kept. The novelty of the strategy is its extreme simplicity. The idea is derived from the results of the percolation theory, typically called gossiping. Gossiping is a convenient and effective approach and has been successfully applied to several areas of the networking. In the proposed work, we will developa sleep management protocol from gossiping for both static and mobile wireless ad hoc networks. Then the protocol will be extended to the asynchronous network, where nodes manage their own states independently. Analysis and simulations will be conducted to show thecorrectness, effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed work. The comparison between analytical and simulation results will justify them for each other. We will investigate the most important performance aspects concerning the proposed strategy, including the effect ofparameter tuning and the impacts of routing protocols. Furthermore, multiple extensions will be developed to improve the performance and make the proposed strategy apply to different network scenarios

    Beaconing Approaches in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: A Survey

    A Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a type of wireless ad hoc network that facilitates ubiquitous connectivity between vehicles in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Beaconing approaches is an important research challenge in high mobility vehicular networks with enabling safety applications. In this article, we perform a survey and a comparative study of state-of-the-art adaptive beaconing approaches in VANET, that explores the main advantages and drawbacks behind their design. The survey part of the paper presents a review of existing adaptive beaconing approaches such as adaptive beacon transmission power, beacon rate adaptation, contention window size adjustment and Hybrid adaptation beaconing techniques. The comparative study of the paper compares the representatives of adaptive beaconing approaches in terms of their objective of study, summary of their study, the utilized simulator and the type of vehicular scenario.
