Time Distortion Anonymization for the Publication of Mobility Data with High Utility
An increasing amount of mobility data is being collected every day by
different means, such as mobile applications or crowd-sensing campaigns. This
data is sometimes published after the application of simple anonymization
techniques (e.g., putting an identifier instead of the users' names), which
might lead to severe threats to the privacy of the participating users.
Literature contains more sophisticated anonymization techniques, often based on
adding noise to the spatial data. However, these techniques either compromise
the privacy if the added noise is too little or the utility of the data if the
added noise is too strong. We investigate in this paper an alternative
solution, which builds on time distortion instead of spatial distortion.
Specifically, our contribution lies in (1) the introduction of the concept of
time distortion to anonymize mobility datasets (2) Promesse, a protection
mechanism implementing this concept (3) a practical study of Promesse compared
to two representative spatial distortion mechanisms, namely Wait For Me, which
enforces k-anonymity, and Geo-Indistinguishability, which enforces differential
privacy. We evaluate our mechanism practically using three real-life datasets.
Our results show that time distortion reduces the number of points of interest
that can be retrieved by an adversary to under 3 %, while the introduced
spatial error is almost null and the distortion introduced on the results of

An analytical framework to nowcast well-being using mobile phone data
An intriguing open question is whether measurements made on Big Data
recording human activities can yield us high-fidelity proxies of socio-economic
development and well-being. Can we monitor and predict the socio-economic
development of a territory just by observing the behavior of its inhabitants
through the lens of Big Data? In this paper, we design a data-driven analytical
framework that uses mobility measures and social measures extracted from mobile
phone data to estimate indicators for socio-economic development and
well-being. We discover that the diversity of mobility, defined in terms of
entropy of the individual users' trajectories, exhibits (i) significant
correlation with two different socio-economic indicators and (ii) the highest
importance in predictive models built to predict the socio-economic indicators.
Our analytical framework opens an interesting perspective to study human
behavior through the lens of Big Data by means of new statistical indicators
that quantify and possibly "nowcast" the well-being and the socio-economic
development of a territory

Location-based services (LBS) are services that position your mobile phone to provide some context-based service for you. Some of these services – called ‘location tracking’ applications - need frequent updates of the current position to decide whether a service should be initiated. Thus, internet-based systems will continuously collect and process the location in relationship to a personal context of an identified customer. This paper will present the concept of location as part of a person’s identity. I will conceptualize location in information systems and relate it to concepts like privacy, geographical information systems and surveillance. The talk will present how the knowledge of a person's private life and identity can be enhanced with data mining technologies on location profiles and movement patterns. Towards Privacy-Preserving Semantic Mobility Analysis
By analyzing data reflecting human mobility, one can derive patterns and knowledge that are tightly linked to the underlying geography and therefore cannot be applied to another territory or even compared with patterns obtained for another territory. Another problem of mobility analysis is compromising personal privacy, since person identities can be determined based on the regularly visited geographical locations.We here propose an idea for novel approach based on transformation of the spatial component of movement data from the geographic space to an abstract semantic space, inspired by the concept of cartographic chorems. We demonstrate that many visual analytics procedures developed for geographic movement data can be adapted for privacy-preserving mobility analysis based on semantic spaces
Virtual Location-Based Services: Merging the Physical and Virtual World
Location-based services gained much popularity through providing users with
helpful information with respect to their current location. The search and
recommendation of nearby locations or places, and the navigation to a specific
location are some of the most prominent location-based services. As a recent
trend, virtual location-based services consider webpages or sites associated
with a location as 'virtual locations' that online users can visit in spite of
not being physically present at the location. The presence of links between
virtual locations and the corresponding physical locations (e.g., geo-location
information of a restaurant linked to its website), allows for novel types of
services and applications which constitute virtual location-based services
(VLBS). The quality and potential benefits of such services largely depends on
the existence of websites referring to physical locations. In this paper, we
investigate the usefulness of linking virtual and physical locations. For this,
we analyze the presence and distribution of virtual locations, i.e., websites
referring to places, for two Irish cities. Using simulated tracks based on a
user movement model, we investigate how mobile users move through the Web as
virtual space. Our results show that virtual locations are omnipresent in urban
areas, and that the situation that a user is close to even several such
locations at any time is rather the normal case instead of the exception
