China’s mobile communications market presents unique market challenges. With a high subscriber growth rate but polarized and stratified consumer adoption trends, an investigation into the current status of this market will improve our understanding on how adoption of mobile communications is evolving. In this descriptive paper we analyze key issues relating to market characteristics of mobile communications with an objective to better comprehend the dynamics of this largest mobile subscribers market. Using secondary data we identify mobile industry and end-user related trends to infer our conclusions for the industry.China;mobile communication;mobile subscribers market

M-commerce (mobile commerce) is growing increasingly popular, and China has a huge potential to develop m-commerce technology. This study focuses on users\u27 perspectives of m-commerce development in China. The development of m-commerce was measured by the extent of m-commerce businesses adopting business intelligence. A research framework was developed for users\u27 perceptions on m-commerce development, survey questionnaires were used to collect data, and ANOVA was used for data analysis

Connections And Connectivity And In China; Guanxi And The Explosion Of Instant Messaging - The Marriage Of Relational Diads, Group Membership, And Web Based Communications

This research explores the reasons behind the phenomenal growth in the use of instant messaging (IM) in China.  The paper proposes that one explanation might lie in the high collectivism, high context communication and the cultural practice of guanxi in China.  On the one hand, current cross cultural research related to China on mobile telephony seems to provide a strong basis for this contention.  On the other hand, the discussion within the literature examining IM within Chinese society appears to be much less robust. However, one could argue that IM provides a unique vehicle for communication within guanxiwang which deserves consideration, especially considering its huge popularity in China.  A cursory examination of initial evidence suggests that instant messaging provides the possibility of high context communication and efficient information gathering which facilitates relationship building and maintenance within the relational dyads as well as group characteristics of a guanxiwang.  One could argue that instant messaging is perfectly suited to the communication needs of these particularistic and personal hyper-social networks in China.

The Metamorphosis And Bifurcation Of Guanxi In Virtual Third Spaces: The Role Of BBS In Changing Social Relationships In China

This research is a the second installation of a planned series of articles exploring the dynamic interaction between the forces of modernization as represented by technology, specifically virtual forms of communication, and traditional culture in China. The focus of the research of this article is the phenomenon of the ubiquity and popularity of BBS (electronic bulletin board systems) in China, long considered “old school” and eclipsed by newer forms of virtual interaction in the West.  The research explores the possibility that BBS’s are developing into virtual third space in which we find traditional social constructs in China being challenged and modified in important ways. Specifically the research underlying this paper proposes to explore that hypothesis that an analysis of the interaction, operations and structure within these social spaces (BBS) might lead one to consider whether or not Guanxi, the relational glue which adheres Chinese society together, as well as other related cultural values and behaviors, are not being updated and modified in critical ways within these virtual third spaces.  Additionally, the research proposes that Guanxi may be bifurcating within the virtual societies of the BBS, where the shared collective experiences of “social networking”  of Guanxi has split from the “utilitarian reciprocal obligation” of “houmen” or guanxi practice.  The results of the research tentatively confirm this proposition and identifies how the unique structure of BBSs and rules of interaction create a new virtual third space, or public sphere, which, while maintaining some aspects of traditional Confucian social order and Guanxi, are leading to their metamorphosis within these virtual communities

    Cellular

Tracks the evolution of the international cellular industry from the late 1970s to the present. The development of the mobile-phone industry into what we know today required remarkable cooperation between companies, governments, and industrial sectors. Companies developing cellular infrastructure, cellular devices, cellular network services, and eventually software and mobile semiconductors had to cooperate, not simply compete, with each other. In this global history of the mobile-phone industry, Daniel D. Garcia-Swartz and Martin Campbell-Kelly examine its development in the United States, Europe, Japan, and several emerging economies, including China and India. They present the evolution of mobile phones from the perspective of vendors of telephone equipment and network operators, users whose lives have been transformed by mobile phones, and governments that have fostered specific mobile-phone standards. Cellular covers the technical aspects of the cellphone, as well as its social and political impact. Beginning with the 1980s, the authors trace the development of closed (proprietary) and open (available to all) cellular standards, the impact of network effects as cellular adoption increased, major technological changes affecting mobile phone hardware, and the role of national governments in shaping the industry. The authors also consider the changing roles that cellular phones have played in the everyday lives of people around the world and the implications 5G technology may have for the future. Finally, they offer statistics on how quickly the cellular industry grew in different regions of the world and how firms competed in those various markets

India and China: A Comparative Analysis of Mobile Phones in Agriculture

In 2010, China and India were named the first and second largest mobile phone markets in the world based on their number of subscribers. India and China have focused on extending their telecommunication services into rural areas for socio-economic benefits. Both countries liberalized and privatized the industry under different political regimes utilizing different strategies. The aim of this thesis is to examine the collaborative efforts of public and private agencies in India and the role they do in disseminating information to farmers through mobile phones when compared to the government agencies in China that have been created to share that information in order to determine which program is more effective. To answer this question, the thesis compares Indian and Chinese policies and programs enacted to encourage sales and use of mobile phones in the agricultural sector to increase efficiency and encourage growth. As free market principles and private for-profit corporations are generally more efficient than government agencies, this thesis hypothesizes that the policies and development initiatives taken by the Indian government are more successful in disseminating information than the government agency approach followed by China. In response to the above research question, the thesis reveals that while the mobile phone agricultural information service programs have been successful in their respective countries, the programs in India are more reliable and faster in disseminating information to farmers. This is determined because the number of subscribers in India's mobile phone agricultural information service programs grew 37.47% in 4 years, from 2008-2012, versus subscribers to China's agricultural information service programs that grew 21.1% from 2007-2010

The spatial structure of mobile communication networks

    Get PDF
There has been a recent surge of interest in the relationship between the spatial and topological structure of communication networks with the availability of large scale anonymous datasets on the communication and mobility patterns of individuals. These datasets, captured as a by-product of modern communications technology, provide a detailed view of the daily interpersonal interactions of millions of people. Mobile phone call logs in particular offer an unparalleled source of information given their personal portable nature and ubiquity in modern society. The use of mobile phones has become so common that these datasets are no longer merely communication logs but close approximations of the network of interpersonal relationships that forms society. The analysis of these proxy networks has the potential to uncover knowledge about society at a scale never previously possible. Networks, and social networks in particular, have been the subject of investigation for more than a century with a rich corpus of theory and methods now available to researchers. Computational approaches to the study of networks are more recent but there are now a wide variety of structural analysis methods that have been developed and applied across many different disciplines and subject areas. The study of interactions across space has developed in parallel with theory, methods, models and a variety of applications. Recent studies of these proxy networks have tended to use computational approaches for analysing community structure and modelling spatial interacitions without much regard for the theory upon which they were built. The underlying assumption has been that all phenomena that can be represented as networks can be analysed with the same methods. In this thesis we demonstrate that this is not the case and identify a number of problems and misinterpretations that can arise when inappropriate methods or network representations are employed. Through a detailed theoretical and empirical analysis we identify appropriate combinations of network representation, spatial scale, and analysis methods for studying the spatial structure of communication networks. Using these findings we demonstrate the potential of such analysis when the appropriate methodology is employed
