    Authoring Support for Mobile Interaction with the Real World.

    Mobile phones have been established as devices for the interaction with objects from the everyday world, such as posters, advertisements or points of interest. However, the usage of physical mobile applications is often still restricted by fixed content and behavior, whose authoring usually requires a considerable coding effort. This paper presents an approach to an authoring tool that separates the creative process of authoring content and behavior for mobile applications from its technical deployment. The tool supports non-technical users in the creation of content and behavior for the mobile guiding application MOPS that associates its content with points of interest in the real world through Physical Mobile Interaction

    Classifying public display systems: an input/output channel perspective

    Public display screens are relatively recent additions to our world, and while they may be as simple as a large screen with minimal input/output features, more recent developments have introduced much richer interaction possibilities supporting a variety of interaction styles. In this paper we propose a framework for classifying public display systems with a view to better understanding how they differ in terms of their interaction channels and how future installations are likely to evolve. This framework is explored through 15 existing public display systems which use mobile phones for interaction in the display space

    The role of places and spaces in lifelog retrieval

    Finding relevant interesting items when searching or browsing within a large multi-modal personal lifelog archive is a significant challenge. The use of contextual cues to filter the collection and aid in the determination of relevant content is often suggested as means to address such challenges. This work presents an exploration of the various locations, garnered through context logging, several participants engaged in during personal information access over a 15 month period. We investigate the implications of the varying data accessed across multiple locations for context-based retrieval from such collections. Our analysis highlights that a large number of spaces and places may be used for information access, but high volume of content is accessed in few

    Exploring the Design of Pay-Per-Use Objects in the Construction Domain

    Equipment used in the construction domain is often hired in order to reduce cost and maintenance overhead. The cost of hire is dependent on the time period involved and does not take into account the actual use equipment has received. This paper presents our initial investigation into how physical objects augmented with sensing and communication technologies can measure use in order to enable new pay-per-use payment models for equipment hire. We also explore user interaction with pay-per-use objects via mobile devices. The user interactions that take place within our prototype scenario range from simple information access to transactions involving multiple users. This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a prototype pay-per-use system motivated by a real world equipment hire scenario. We also provide insights into the various challenges introduced by supporting a pay-per-use model, including data storage and data security in addition to user interaction issues

    Our daily life is pervaded by digital information and devices, not least the common mobile phone. However, a seamless connection between our physical world, such as a movie trailer on a screen in the main rail station and its digital counterparts, such as an online ticket service, remains difficult. In this paper, we present contextual bookmarks that enable users to capture information of interest with a mobile camera phone. Depending on the user’s context, the snapshot is mapped to a digital service such as ordering tickets for a movie theater close by or a link to the upcoming movie’s Web page

    Examining the utility of affective response in search of personal lifelogs

    Personal lifelog archives contain digital records captured from an individual’s daily life, for example emails, documents edited, webpages downloaded and photographs taken. While capturing this information is becoming increasingly easy, subsequently locating interesting items from within these archives is a significant challenge. One potential source of information to identify items of importance to an individual is their affective state during the capture of the information. The strength of an individual’s affective response to their current situation can often be gauged from their physiological response. For this study we explored the utility of the following biometric features to indicate significant items: galvanic skin response (GSR), heart rate (HR) and skin temperature (ST). Significant or important events tend to raise an individual’s arousal level, causing a measurable biometric response. We examined the utility of using biometric response to identify significant items and for re-ranking traditional information retrieval (IR) result sets. Results obtained indicate that skin temperature is most useful for extracting interesting items from personal archives containing passively captured images, computer activity and SMS messages

    Automated Map Reading: Image Based Localisation in 2-D Maps Using Binary Semantic Descriptors

    We describe a novel approach to image based localisation in urban environments using semantic matching between images and a 2-D map. It contrasts with the vast majority of existing approaches which use image to image database matching. We use highly compact binary descriptors to represent semantic features at locations, significantly increasing scalability compared with existing methods and having the potential for greater invariance to variable imaging conditions. The approach is also more akin to human map reading, making it more suited to human-system interaction. The binary descriptors indicate the presence or not of semantic features relating to buildings and road junctions in discrete viewing directions. We use CNN classifiers to detect the features in images and match descriptor estimates with a database of location tagged descriptors derived from the 2-D map. In isolation, the descriptors are not sufficiently discriminative, but when concatenated sequentially along a route, their combination becomes highly distinctive and allows localisation even when using non-perfect classifiers. Performance is further improved by taking into account left or right turns over a route. Experimental results obtained using Google StreetView and OpenStreetMap data show that the approach has considerable potential, achieving localisation accuracy of around 85% using routes corresponding to approximately 200 meters.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems 201
