Synchronising C/C++ and POWER
Shared memory concurrency relies on synchronisation primitives: compare-and-swap, load-reserve/store-conditional (aka LL/SC), language-level mutexes, and so on. In a sequentially consistent setting, or even in the TSO setting of x86 and Sparc, these have well-understood semantics. But in the very relaxed settings of IBM®, POWER®, ARM, or C/C++, it remains surprisingly unclear exactly what the programmer can depend on.
This paper studies relaxed-memory synchronisation. On the hardware side, we give a clear semantic characterisation of the load-reserve/store-conditional primitives as provided by POWER multiprocessors, for the first time since they were introduced 20 years ago; we cover their interaction with relaxed loads, stores, barriers, and dependencies. Our model, while not officially sanctioned by the vendor, is validated by extensive testing, comparing actual implementation behaviour against an oracle generated from the model, and by detailed discussion with IBM staff. We believe the ARM semantics to be similar.
On the software side, we prove sound a proposed compilation scheme of the C/C++ synchronisation constructs to POWER, including C/C++ spinlock mutexes, fences, and read-modify-write operations, together with the simpler atomic operations for which soundness is already known from our previous work; this is a first step in verifying concurrent algorithms that use load-reserve/store-conditional with respect to a realistic semantics. We also build confidence in the C/C++ model in its own terms, fixing some omissions and contributing to the C standards committee adoption of the C++11 concurrency model

An Integrated Program Representation for Loop Optimizations
Inspite of all the advances, automatic parallelization has not entered the general purpose compiling environment for several reasons.
There have been two distinct schools of thought in parallelization domain namely, affine and non-affine which have remained incompatible with each other over the years. Thus, a good practical compiler will have to be able to analyze and parallelize any type of code - affine or non-affine or a mix of both.
To be able to achieve the best performance, compilers will have to derive the order of transformations best suitable for a given program on a given system. This problem, known as "Phase Ordering", is a very crucial impedance for practical compilers, more so for parallelizing compilers. The ideal compiler should be able to consider various orders of transformations and reason about the performance benefits of the same.
In order to achieve such a compiler, in this paper, we propose a unified program representation which has the following characteristics:
a) Modular in nature.
b) Ability to represent both ane and non-ane transformations.
c) Ability to use detailed static run-time estimators directly on the representation
OSS architecture for mixed-criticality systems – a dual view from a software and system engineering perspective
Computer-based automation in industrial appliances led to a growing number of
logically dependent, but physically separated embedded control units per
appliance. Many of those components are safety-critical systems, and require
adherence to safety standards, which is inconsonant with the relentless demand
for features in those appliances. Features lead to a growing amount of control
units per appliance, and to a increasing complexity of the overall software
stack, being unfavourable for safety certifications. Modern CPUs provide means
to revise traditional separation of concerns design primitives: the consolidation
of systems, which yields new engineering challenges that concern the entire
software and system stack.
Multi-core CPUs favour economic consolidation of formerly separated
systems with one efficient single hardware unit. Nonetheless, the system
architecture must provide means to guarantee the freedom from interference
between domains of different criticality. System consolidation demands for
architectural and engineering strategies to fulfil requirements (e.g., real-time
or certifiability criteria) in safety-critical environments.
In parallel, there is an ongoing trend to substitute ordinary proprietary base
platform software components by mature OSS variants for economic and
engineering reasons. There are fundamental differences of processual properties
in development processes of OSS and proprietary software. OSS in
safety-critical systems requires development process assessment techniques to
build an evidence-based fundament for certification efforts that is based upon
empirical software engineering methods.
In this thesis, I will approach from both sides: the software and system
engineering perspective. In the first part of this thesis, I focus on the
assessment of OSS components: I develop software engineering techniques
that allow to quantify characteristics of distributed OSS development
processes. I show that ex-post analyses of software development processes can
be used to serve as a foundation for certification efforts, as it is required
for safety-critical systems.
In the second part of this thesis, I present a system architecture based on
OSS components that allows for consolidation of mixed-criticality systems
on a single platform. Therefore, I exploit virtualisation extensions of modern
CPUs to strictly isolate domains of different criticality. The proposed
architecture shall eradicate any remaining hypervisor activity in order to
preserve real-time capabilities of the hardware by design, while
guaranteeing strict isolation across domains.Computergestützte Automatisierung industrieller Systeme führt zu einer
wachsenden Anzahl an logisch abhängigen, aber physisch voneinander getrennten
Steuergeräten pro System. Viele der Einzelgeräte sind sicherheitskritische
Systeme, welche die Einhaltung von Sicherheitsstandards erfordern, was durch
die unermüdliche Nachfrage an Funktionalitäten erschwert wird. Diese führt zu
einer wachsenden Gesamtzahl an Steuergeräten, einhergehend mit wachsender
Komplexität des gesamten Softwarekorpus, wodurch Zertifizierungsvorhaben
erschwert werden. Moderne Prozessoren stellen Mittel zur Verfügung, welche es
ermöglichen, das traditionelle >Trennung von Belangen< Designprinzip zu
erneuern: die Systemkonsolidierung. Sie stellt neue ingenieurstechnische
Herausforderungen, die den gesamten Software und Systemstapel betreffen.
Mehrkernprozessoren begünstigen die ökonomische und effiziente Konsolidierung
vormals getrennter Systemen zu einer effizienten Hardwareeinheit. Geeignete
Systemarchitekturen müssen jedoch die Rückwirkungsfreiheit zwischen Domänen
unterschiedlicher Kritikalität sicherstellen. Die Konsolidierung erfordert
architektonische, als auch ingenieurstechnische Strategien um die Anforderungen
(etwa Echtzeit- oder Zertifizierbarkeitskriterien) in sicherheitskritischen
Umgebungen erfüllen zu können.
Zunehmend werden herkömmliche proprietär entwickelte Basisplattformkomponenten
aus ökonomischen und technischen Gründen vermehrt durch ausgereifte OSS
Alternativen ersetzt. Jedoch hindern fundamentale Unterschiede bei prozessualen
Eigenschaften des Entwicklungsprozesses bei OSS den Einsatz in
sicherheitskritischen Systemen. Dieser erfordert Techniken, welche es erlauben
die Entwicklungsprozesse zu bewerten um ein evidenzbasiertes Fundament für
Zertifizierungsvorhaben basierend auf empirischen Methoden des Software
Engineerings zur Verfügung zu stellen.
In dieser Arbeit nähere ich mich von beiden Seiten: der Softwaretechnik, und
der Systemarchitektur. Im ersten Teil befasse ich mich mit der Beurteilung von
OSS Komponenten: Ich entwickle Softwareanalysetechniken, welche es
ermöglichen, prozessuale Charakteristika von verteilten OSS
Entwicklungsvorhaben zu quantifizieren. Ich zeige, dass rückschauende Analysen
des Entwicklungsprozess als Grundlage für Softwarezertifizierungsvorhaben
genutzt werden können.
Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit widme ich mich der Systemarchitektur. Ich stelle
eine OSS-basierte Systemarchitektur vor, welche die Konsolidierung von
Systemen gemischter Kritikalität auf einer alleinstehenden Plattform
ermöglicht. Dazu nutze ich Virtualisierungserweiterungen moderner Prozessoren
aus, um die Hardware in strikt voneinander isolierten Rechendomänen unterschiedlicher
Kritikalität unterteilen zu können. Die vorgeschlagene Architektur soll jegliche
Betriebsstörungen des Hypervisors beseitigen, um die Echtzeitfähigkeiten der
Hardware bauartbedingt aufrecht zu erhalten, während strikte Isolierung
zwischen Domänen stets sicher gestellt ist
Operating System Support for Redundant Multithreading
Failing hardware is a fact and trends in microprocessor design indicate that the fraction of hardware suffering from permanent and transient faults will continue to increase in future chip generations. Researchers proposed various solutions to this issue with different downsides: Specialized hardware components make hardware more expensive in production and consume additional energy at runtime. Fault-tolerant algorithms and libraries enforce specific programming models on the developer. Compiler-based fault tolerance requires the source code for all applications to be available for recompilation. In this thesis I present ASTEROID, an operating system architecture that integrates applications with different reliability needs.
ASTEROID is built on top of the L4/Fiasco.OC microkernel and extends the system with Romain, an operating system service that transparently replicates user applications. Romain supports single- and multi-threaded applications without requiring access to the application's source code. Romain replicates applications and their resources completely and thereby does not rely on hardware extensions, such as ECC-protected memory. In my thesis I describe how to efficiently implement replication as a form of redundant multithreading in software. I develop mechanisms to manage replica resources and to make multi-threaded programs behave deterministically for replication.
I furthermore present an approach to handle applications that use shared-memory channels with other programs. My evaluation shows that Romain provides 100% error detection and more than 99.6% error correction for single-bit flips in memory and general-purpose registers. At the same time, Romain's execution time overhead is below 14% for single-threaded applications running in triple-modular redundant mode. The last part of my thesis acknowledges that software-implemented fault tolerance methods often rely on the correct functioning of a certain set of hardware and software components, the Reliable Computing Base (RCB).
I introduce the concept of the RCB and discuss what constitutes the RCB of the ASTEROID system and other fault tolerance mechanisms. Thereafter I show three case studies that evaluate approaches to protecting RCB components and thereby aim to achieve a software stack that is fully protected against hardware errors
Functional programming abstractions for weakly consistent systems
In recent years, there has been a wide-spread adoption of both multicore and cloud computing. Traditionally, concurrent programmers have relied on the underlying system providing strong memory consistency, where there is a semblance of concurrent tasks operating over a shared global address space. However, providing scalable strong consistency guarantees as the scale of the system grows is an increasingly difficult endeavor. In a multicore setting, the increasing complexity and the lack of scalability of hardware mechanisms such as cache coherence deters scalable strong consistency. In geo-distributed compute clouds, the availability concerns in the presence of partial failures prohibit strong consistency. Hence, modern multicore and cloud computing platforms eschew strong consistency in favor of weakly consistent memory, where each task\u27s memory view is incomparable with the other tasks. As a result, programmers on these platforms must tackle the full complexity of concurrent programming for an asynchronous distributed system. ^ This dissertation argues that functional programming language abstractions can simplify scalable concurrent programming for weakly consistent systems. Functional programming espouses mutation-free programming, and rare mutations when present are explicit in their types. By controlling and explicitly reasoning about shared state mutations, functional abstractions simplify concurrent programming. Building upon this intuition, this dissertation presents three major contributions, each focused on addressing a particular challenge associated with weakly consistent loosely coupled systems. First, it describes A NERIS, a concurrent functional programming language and runtime for the Intel Single-chip Cloud Computer, and shows how to provide an efficient cache coherent virtual address space on top of a non cache coherent multicore architecture. Next, it describes RxCML, a distributed extension of MULTIMLTON and shows that, with the help of speculative execution, synchronous communication can be utilized as an efficient abstraction for programming asynchronous distributed systems. Finally, it presents QUELEA, a programming system for eventually consistent distributed stores, and shows that the choice of correct consistency level for replicated data type operations and transactions can be automated with the help of high-level declarative contracts
