    Synthetic Micro-Doppler Signatures of Non-Stationary Channels for the Design of Human Activity Recognition Systems

    The main aim of this dissertation is to generate synthetic micro-Doppler signatures and TV-MDSs to train the HACs. This is achieved by developing non-stationary fixed-tofixed (F2F) indoor channel models. Such models provide an in-depth understanding of the channel parameters that influence the micro-Doppler signatures and TV-MDSs. Hence, the proposed non-stationary channel models help to generate the micro-Doppler signatures and the TV-MDSs, which fit those of the collected measurement data. First, we start with a simple two-dimensional (2D) non-stationary F2F channel model with fixed and moving scatterers. Such a model assumes that the moving scatterers are moving in 2D geometry with simple time variant (TV) trajectories and they have the same height as the transmitter and the receiver antennas. The model of the Doppler shifts caused by the moving scatterers in 2D space is provided. The micro-Doppler signature of this model is explored by employing the spectrogram of which a closed-form expression is derived. Moreover, we demonstrate how the TV-MDSs can be computed from the spectrograms. The aforementioned model is extended to provide two three-dimensional (3D) nonstationary F2F channel models. Such models allow simulating the micro-Doppler signatures influenced by the 3D trajectories of human activities, such as walking and falling. Moreover, expressions of the trajectories of these human activities are also given. Approximate solutions of the spectrograms of these channels are provided by approximating the Doppler shifts caused by the human activities into linear piecewise functions of time. The impact of these activities on the micro-Doppler signatures and the TV-MDSs of the simulated channel models is explored. The work done in this dissertation is not limited to analyzing micro-Doppler signatures and the TV-MDSs of the simulated channel models, but also includes those of the measured channels. The channel-state-information (CSI) software tool installed on commercial-off-theshelf (COTS) devices is utilized to capture complex channel transfer function (CTF) data under the influence of human activities. To mitigate the TV phase distortions caused by the clock asynchronization between the transmitter and receiver stations, a back-to-back (B2B) connection is employed. Models of the measured CTF and its true phases are also shown. The true micro-Doppler signatures and TV-MDSs of the measured CTF are analyzed. The results showed that the CSI tool is reliable to validate the proposed channel models. This allows the micro-Doppler signatures and the TV-MDSs extracted from the data collected with this tool to be used to train the HACs.publishedVersio

    Mitigation of CSI Temporal Phase Rotation with B2B Calibration Method for Fine-Grained Motion Detection Analysis on Commodity Wi-Fi Devices

    Limitations of optical devices for motion sensing such as small coverage, sensitivity to obstacles, and privacy exposure result in the need for improvement. As motion sensing based on radio frequency signals is not constrained by the limitation above, channel state information (CSI) from Wi-Fi devices could be used to improve sensing performance under the above circumstances. Unfortunately, CSI phase cannot be practically obtained due to the temporal phase rotation generated from Wi-Fi chips. Therefore, it would be rather complicated to realize motion analysis, especially the direction of motion. To mitigate the issue, this paper proposes a CSI calibration method that employs a back-to-back channel between Wi-Fi transceivers for phase rotation removal while preserving the original CSI phase. Through experiment, calibrated CSI showed a high similarity to the channel without phase rotation measured using a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). Another experiment was conducted to observe Doppler frequency due to simple hand gestures using the Wavelet transform. A visual analysis revealed that the Doppler frequency of calibrated CSI could correctly capture the motion pattern. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first calibration method that maintains the original CSI and is applicable for in-depth motion analysis

    Contribution to the integration, performance improvement, and smart management of data and resources in the Internet of Things

    [SPA] Esta tesis doctoral se presenta bajo la modalidad de compendio de publicaciones.[ENG] This doctoral dissertation has been presented in the form of thesis by publication. The IoT has seen a tremendous growth in the last few years. Not only due to its potential to transform societies, but also as an enabling technology for many other technological advances. Unfortunately, the IoT is a relatively recent paradigm that lacks the maturity of other well-established (not so recent) revolutions like the internet itself or Wireless Sensor Networks; upon which the IoT is built. The presented Thesis contributes to this maturation process by researching on the underlying communication mechanisms that enable a truly ubiquitous and effective IoT. As a Thesis by compilation, 5 relevant articles are introduced and discussed. Each of such articles delve into different key aspects that, in their own way, help closing the gap between what the IoT is expected to bring and what the IoT actually brings. As thoroughly commented throughout the main text, the comprehensive approach taken in this Thesis ensures that multiple angles of the same plane --the communication plane-- are analyzed and studied. From the mathematical analysis of how electromagnetic waves propagate through complex environments to the utilization of recent Machine Learning techniques, this Thesis explore a wide range of scientific and researching tools that are shown to improve the final performance of the IoT. In the first three chapters of this document, the reader will be introduced to the current context and state-of-the-art of the IoT while, at the same time, the formal objectives of this Thesis are outlined and set into such a global context. In the next five chapters, the five corresponding articles are presented and commented. For each and every of these articles: a brief abstract, a methodology summary, a highlight on the results and contributions and final conclusions are also added.     Managing the Paradox of Growth in Brand Communities Through Social Media

    The commercial benefits of online brand communities are an important focus for marketers seeking deeper engagement with increasingly elusive consumers. Managing participation in these socially bound brand conversations challenges practitioners to balance authenticity towards the community against corporate goals. This is important as social media proliferation affords communities the capacity to reach a scale well beyond their offline equivalents and to operate independently of brands. While research has identified the important elements of engagement in brand communities, less is known about how strategies required to maximise relationships in these circumstances must change with growth. Using a case study approach, we examine how a rapidly growing firm and its community have managed the challenges of a maturing relationship. We find that, in time, the community becomes self-sustaining, and a new set of marketing management strategies is required to move engagement to the next level

Managing participation in these socially bound brand conversations challenges practitioners to balance authenticity towards the community against corporate goals. This is important as social media proliferation affords communities the capacity to reach a scale well beyond their offline equivalents and to operate independently of brands. While research has identified the important elements of engagement in brand communities, less is known about how strategies required to maximise relationships in these circumstances must change with growth. Using a case study approach, we examine how a rapidly growing firm and its community have managed the challenges of a maturing relationship. We find that, in time, the community becomes self-sustaining, and a new set of marketing management strategies is required to move engagement to the next level
