An exploration of the language within Ofsted reports and their influence on primary school performance in mathematics: a mixed methods critical discourse analysis
This thesis contributes to the understanding of the language of Ofsted reports, their similarity to one another and associations between different terms used within ‘areas for improvement’ sections and subsequent outcomes for pupils. The research responds to concerns from serving headteachers that Ofsted reports are overly similar, do not capture the unique story of their school, and are unhelpful for improvement. In seeking to answer ‘how similar are
Ofsted reports’ the study uses two tools, a plagiarism detection software (Turnitin) and a discourse analysis tool (NVivo) to identify trends within and across a large corpus of reports.
The approach is based on critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 2009; Fairclough, 1989) but shaped in the form of practitioner enquiry seeking power in the form of impact on pupils and practitioners, rather than a more traditional, sociological application of the method.
The research found that in 2017, primary school section 5 Ofsted reports had more than half of their content exactly duplicated within other primary school inspection reports published that same year. Discourse analysis showed the quality assurance process overrode variables such as inspector designation, gender, or team size, leading to three distinct patterns of duplication: block duplication, self-referencing, and template writing. The most unique part of a report was found to be the ‘area for improvement’ section, which was tracked to externally verified outcomes for pupils using terms linked to ‘mathematics’. Those
required to improve mathematics in their areas for improvement improved progress and attainment in mathematics significantly more than national rates. These findings indicate that there was a positive correlation between the inspection reporting process and a beneficial impact on pupil outcomes in mathematics, and that the significant similarity of one report to another had no bearing on the usefulness of the report for school improvement purposes

Bayesian networks for disease diagnosis: What are they, who has used them and how?
A Bayesian network (BN) is a probabilistic graph based on Bayes' theorem,
used to show dependencies or cause-and-effect relationships between variables.
They are widely applied in diagnostic processes since they allow the
incorporation of medical knowledge to the model while expressing uncertainty in
terms of probability. This systematic review presents the state of the art in
the applications of BNs in medicine in general and in the diagnosis and
prognosis of diseases in particular. Indexed articles from the last 40 years
were included. The studies generally used the typical measures of diagnostic
and prognostic accuracy: sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and the
area under the ROC curve. Overall, we found that disease diagnosis and
prognosis based on BNs can be successfully used to model complex medical

Qluster: An easy-to-implement generic workflow for robust clustering of health data
The exploration of heath data by clustering algorithms allows to better describe the populations of interest by seeking the sub-profiles that compose it. This therefore reinforces medical knowledge, whether it is about a disease or a targeted population in real life. Nevertheless, contrary to the so-called conventional biostatistical methods where numerous guidelines exist, the standardization of data science approaches in clinical research remains a little discussed subject. This results in a significant variability in the execution of data science projects, whether in terms of algorithms used, reliability and credibility of the designed approach. Taking the path of parsimonious and judicious choice of both algorithms and implementations at each stage, this article proposes Qluster, a practical workflow for performing clustering tasks. Indeed, this workflow makes a compromise between (1) genericity of applications (e.g. usable on small or big data, on continuous, categorical or mixed variables, on database of high-dimensionality or not), (2) ease of implementation (need for few packages, few algorithms, few parameters, ...), and (3) robustness (e.g. use of proven algorithms and robust packages, evaluation of the stability of clusters, management of noise and multicollinearity). This workflow can be easily automated and/or routinely applied on a wide range of clustering projects. It can be useful both for data scientists with little experience in the field to make data clustering easier and more robust, and for more experienced data scientists who are looking for a straightforward and reliable solution to routinely perform preliminary data mining. A synthesis of the literature on data clustering as well as the scientific rationale supporting the proposed workflow is also provided. Finally, a detailed application of the workflow on a concrete use case is provided, along with a practical discussion for data scientists. Agriculture continues to be the primary source of income for most rural people in the developing economy. Drones are actually unmanned aerial vehicles that are used for imaging, soil and crop surveillance, and a variety of other purposes in agricultural sectors. Drone technology is now becoming an emerging technology for large-scale applications in agriculture. Architecture Smells vs. Concurrency Bugs: an Exploratory Study and Negative Results
Technical debt occurs in many different forms across software artifacts. One
such form is connected to software architectures where debt emerges in the form
of structural anti-patterns across architecture elements, namely, architecture
smells. As defined in the literature, ``Architecture smells are recurrent
architectural decisions that negatively impact internal system quality", thus
increasing technical debt. In this paper, we aim at exploring whether there
exist manifestations of architectural technical debt beyond decreased code or
architectural quality, namely, whether there is a relation between architecture
smells (which primarily reflect structural characteristics) and the occurrence
of concurrency bugs (which primarily manifest at runtime). We study 125
releases of 5 large data-intensive software systems to reveal that (1) several
architecture smells may in fact indicate the presence of concurrency problems
likely to manifest at runtime but (2) smells are not correlated with
concurrency in general -- rather, for specific concurrency bugs they must be
combined with an accompanying articulation of specific project characteristics
such as project distribution. As an example, a cyclic dependency could be
present in the code, but the specific execution-flow could be never executed at
runtime
Deep Transfer Learning Applications in Intrusion Detection Systems: A Comprehensive Review
Globally, the external Internet is increasingly being connected to the
contemporary industrial control system. As a result, there is an immediate need
to protect the network from several threats. The key infrastructure of
industrial activity may be protected from harm by using an intrusion detection
system (IDS), a preventive measure mechanism, to recognize new kinds of
dangerous threats and hostile activities. The most recent artificial
intelligence (AI) techniques used to create IDS in many kinds of industrial
control networks are examined in this study, with a particular emphasis on
IDS-based deep transfer learning (DTL). This latter can be seen as a type of
information fusion that merge, and/or adapt knowledge from multiple domains to
enhance the performance of the target task, particularly when the labeled data
in the target domain is scarce. Publications issued after 2015 were taken into
account. These selected publications were divided into three categories:
DTL-only and IDS-only are involved in the introduction and background, and
DTL-based IDS papers are involved in the core papers of this review.
Researchers will be able to have a better grasp of the current state of DTL
approaches used in IDS in many different types of networks by reading this
review paper. Other useful information, such as the datasets used, the sort of
DTL employed, the pre-trained network, IDS techniques, the evaluation metrics
including accuracy/F-score and false alarm rate (FAR), and the improvement
gained, were also covered. The algorithms, and methods used in several studies,
or illustrate deeply and clearly the principle in any DTL-based IDS subcategory
are presented to the reader
Estudo da remodelagem reversa miocárdica através da análise proteómica do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
Valve replacement remains as the standard therapeutic option for aortic
stenosis patients, aiming at abolishing pressure overload and triggering
myocardial reverse remodeling. However, despite the instant hemodynamic
benefit, not all patients show complete regression of myocardial hypertrophy,
being at higher risk for adverse outcomes, such as heart failure. The current
comprehension of the biological mechanisms underlying an incomplete reverse
remodeling is far from complete. Furthermore, definitive prognostic tools and
ancillary therapies to improve the outcome of the patients undergoing valve
replacement are missing. To help abridge these gaps, a combined myocardial
(phospho)proteomics and pericardial fluid proteomics approach was followed,
taking advantage of human biopsies and pericardial fluid collected during
surgery and whose origin anticipated a wealth of molecular information
contained therein.
From over 1800 and 750 proteins identified, respectively, in the myocardium
and in the pericardial fluid of aortic stenosis patients, a total of 90 dysregulated
proteins were detected. Gene annotation and pathway enrichment analyses,
together with discriminant analysis, are compatible with a scenario of increased
pro-hypertrophic gene expression and protein synthesis, defective ubiquitinproteasome system activity, proclivity to cell death (potentially fed by
complement activity and other extrinsic factors, such as death receptor
activators), acute-phase response, immune system activation and fibrosis.
Specific validation of some targets through immunoblot techniques and
correlation with clinical data pointed to complement C3 β chain, Muscle Ring
Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and the dual-specificity Tyr-phosphorylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) as potential markers of an incomplete
response. In addition, kinase prediction from phosphoproteome data suggests
that the modulation of casein kinase 2, the family of IκB kinases, glycogen
synthase kinase 3 and DYRK1A may help improve the outcome of patients
undergoing valve replacement. Particularly, functional studies with DYRK1A+/-
cardiomyocytes show that this kinase may be an important target to treat
cardiac dysfunction, provided that mutant cells presented a different response
to stretch and reduced ability to develop force (active tension).
This study opens many avenues in post-aortic valve replacement reverse
remodeling research. In the future, gain-of-function and/or loss-of-function
studies with isolated cardiomyocytes or with animal models of aortic bandingdebanding will help disclose the efficacy of targeting the surrogate therapeutic
targets. Besides, clinical studies in larger cohorts will bring definitive proof of
complement C3, MuRF1 and DYRK1A prognostic value.A substituição da válvula aórtica continua a ser a opção terapêutica de
referência para doentes com estenose aórtica e visa a eliminação da
sobrecarga de pressão, desencadeando a remodelagem reversa miocárdica.
Contudo, apesar do benefício hemodinâmico imediato, nem todos os pacientes
apresentam regressão completa da hipertrofia do miocárdio, ficando com maior
risco de eventos adversos, como a insuficiência cardíaca. Atualmente, os
mecanismos biológicos subjacentes a uma remodelagem reversa incompleta
ainda não são claros. Além disso, não dispomos de ferramentas de
prognóstico definitivos nem de terapias auxiliares para melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para substituição da válvula. Para ajudar a resolver
estas lacunas, uma abordagem combinada de (fosfo)proteómica e proteómica
para a caracterização, respetivamente, do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
foi seguida, tomando partido de biópsias e líquidos pericárdicos recolhidos em
ambiente cirúrgico.
Das mais de 1800 e 750 proteínas identificadas, respetivamente, no miocárdio
e no líquido pericárdico dos pacientes com estenose aórtica, um total de 90
proteínas desreguladas foram detetadas. As análises de anotação de genes,
de enriquecimento de vias celulares e discriminativa corroboram um cenário de
aumento da expressão de genes pro-hipertróficos e de síntese proteica, um
sistema ubiquitina-proteassoma ineficiente, uma tendência para morte celular
(potencialmente acelerada pela atividade do complemento e por outros fatores
extrínsecos que ativam death receptors), com ativação da resposta de fase
aguda e do sistema imune, assim como da fibrose.
A validação de alguns alvos específicos através de immunoblot e correlação
com dados clínicos apontou para a cadeia β do complemento C3, a Muscle
Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) e a dual-specificity Tyr-phosphoylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) como potenciais marcadores de uma resposta
incompleta. Por outro lado, a predição de cinases a partir do fosfoproteoma,
sugere que a modulação da caseína cinase 2, a família de cinases do IκB, a
glicogénio sintase cinase 3 e da DYRK1A pode ajudar a melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para intervenção. Em particular, a avaliação funcional
de cardiomiócitos DYRK1A+/- mostraram que esta cinase pode ser um alvo
importante para tratar a disfunção cardíaca, uma vez que os miócitos mutantes
responderam de forma diferente ao estiramento e mostraram uma menor
capacidade para desenvolver força (tensão ativa).
Este estudo levanta várias hipóteses na investigação da remodelagem reversa.
No futuro, estudos de ganho e/ou perda de função realizados em
cardiomiócitos isolados ou em modelos animais de banding-debanding da
aorta ajudarão a testar a eficácia de modular os potenciais alvos terapêuticos
encontrados. Além disso, estudos clínicos em coortes de maior dimensão
trarão conclusões definitivas quanto ao valor de prognóstico do complemento

Wildlife trade in Latin America: people, economy and conservation
Wildlife trade is among the main threats to biodiversity conservation and may pose a risk to human health because of the spread of zoonotic diseases. To avoid social, economic and environmental consequences of illegal trade, it is crucial to understand the factors influencing the wildlife market and the effectiveness of policies already in place. I aim to unveil the biological and socioeconomic factors driving wildlife trade, the health risks imposed by the activity, and the effectiveness of certified captive-breeding as a strategy to curb the illegal market in Latin America through a multidisciplinary approach. I assess socioeconomic correlates of the emerging international trade in wild cat species from Latin America using a dataset of >1,000 seized cats, showing that high levels of corruption and Chinese private investment and low income per capita were related to higher numbers of jaguar seizures. I assess the effectiveness of primate captive-breeding programmes as an intervention to curb wildlife trafficking. Illegal sources held >70% of the primate market share. Legal primates are more expensive, and the production is not sufficiently high to fulfil the demand. I assess the scale of the illegal trade and ownership of venomous snakes in Brazil. Venomous snake taxa responsible for higher numbers of snakebites were those most often kept as pets. I uncover how online wildlife pet traders and consumers responded to campaigns associating the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of 20,000 posts on Facebook groups, only 0.44% mentioned COVID-19 and several stimulated the trade in wild species during lockdown. Despite the existence of international and national wildlife trade regulations, I conclude that illegal wildlife trade is still an issue that needs further addressing in Latin America. I identify knowledge gaps and candidate interventions to amend the current loopholes to reduce wildlife trafficking. My aspiration with this thesis is to provide useful information that can inform better strategies to tackle illegal wildlife trade in Latin America
