    An interoceptive predictive coding model of conscious presence

    We describe a theoretical model of the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying conscious presence and its disturbances. The model is based on interoceptive prediction error and is informed by predictive models of agency, general models of hierarchical predictive coding and dopaminergic signaling in cortex, the role of the anterior insular cortex (AIC) in interoception and emotion, and cognitive neuroscience evidence from studies of virtual reality and of psychiatric disorders of presence, specifically depersonalization/derealization disorder. The model associates presence with successful suppression by top-down predictions of informative interoceptive signals evoked by autonomic control signals and, indirectly, by visceral responses to afferent sensory signals. The model connects presence to agency by allowing that predicted interoceptive signals will depend on whether afferent sensory signals are determined, by a parallel predictive-coding mechanism, to be self-generated or externally caused. Anatomically, we identify the AIC as the likely locus of key neural comparator mechanisms. Our model integrates a broad range of previously disparate evidence, makes predictions for conjoint manipulations of agency and presence, offers a new view of emotion as interoceptive inference, and represents a step toward a mechanistic account of a fundamental phenomenological property of consciousness

    Influence of Music on Anxiety Induced by Fear of Heights in Virtual Reality

    Music is a potent mood regulator that can induce relaxation and reduce anxiety in different situations. While several studies demonstrate that certain types of music have a subjective anxiolytic effect, the reported results from physiological responses are less conclusive. Virtual reality allows us to study diverse scenarios of real life under strict experimental control while preserving high ecological validity. We aimed to study the modulating effect of music on the anxiety responses triggered by an immersive virtual reality scenario designed to induce fear of heights. Subjects experienced a virtual scenario depicting an exterior elevator platform ascending and descending the total height of its 350 meters tall supporting structure. Participants were allocated to either a group that experienced the elevator ride with background music or without, in a between-groups design. Furthermore, each group included participants with different degrees of fear of heights, ranging from low to high fear. Recordings of heart rate, galvanic skin response, body balance, and head movements were obtained during the experiments. Subjective anxiety was measured by means of three questionnaires. The scenario produced significant changes in subjective and physiological measures, confirming its efficacy as a stressor. A significant increase in state anxiety was found between pre and post-assessment in the silence group, but not in the music group, indicating that post-stress recovery was faster in the musical group. Results suggest that music can ameliorate the subjective anxiety produced by fear of heights

    Reduction of physiological stress by urban green space in a multisensory virtual experiment

    Although stress is an increasing global health problem in cities, urban green spaces can provide health benefits. There is, however, a lack of understanding of the link between physiological mechanisms and qualities of urban green spaces. Here, we compare the effects of visual stimuli (360 degree virtual photos of an urban environment, forest, and park) to the effects of congruent olfactory stimuli (nature and city odours) and auditory stimuli (bird songs and noise) on physiological stress recovery. Participants (N = 154) were pseudo-randomised into participating in one of the three environments and subsequently exposed to stress (operationalised by skin conductance levels). The park and forest, but not the urban area, provided significant stress reduction. High pleasantness ratings of the environment were linked to low physiological stress responses for olfactory and to some extent for auditory, but not for visual stimuli. This result indicates that olfactory stimuli may be better at facilitating stress reduction than visual stimuli. Currently, urban planners prioritise visual stimuli when planning open green spaces, but urban planners should also consider multisensory qualities

    Optimizing Performance through Stress and Induction Levels in Virtual Reality Using Autonomic Responses

    Virtual reality (VR) is now a consumer technology, but individuals' experience with systems or different applications varies enormously. This means that most consumer applications need to consider how to train naive users in the application's operation. We examine three different ways of imparting on-boarding instructions to users: first-person audio guidance, second-person non-player character (NPC) diegetic guidance or written instruction. Our primary hypothesis is that the second-person condition will induce a higher stress level on the user, given the perceived presence of a supervising NPC. Our secondary hypothesis is that there is a correlation between stress and performance, meaning that participants with elevated stress levels within a certain margin will complete their tasks faster and more successfully. By extension, participants whose stress levels are either above or below this optimal margin will under-perform on the same tasks. The tasks in question are an interaction test (IT), designed to test participants' abilities to pick up and manipulate virtual objects, and a mental rotation test (MRT), designed to place them under cognitive load. During these tasks we measure the users' level of stress from their bio signals via a mobile wearable device that tracks their heart rate (HR), galvanic skin response (GSR) and body temperature in real-time. Statistical significance was not found in the stress or performance levels between the instruction conditions, but the secondary hypothesis was supported and a correlation was found between stress and performance levels across the conditions in both HR and GSR

    Callous-Unemotional Traits and Fearlessness: A Cardiovascular Psychophysiological Perspective in Two Adolescent Samples using Virtual Reality

    There has been a longstanding debate about the link between callous-unemotional traits and fearlessness. However, biological evidence for a relationship in adolescents is lacking. Using two adolescent samples, we measured emotional reactivity, and cardiac measures of sympathetic (pre-ejection period) and parasympathetic (respiratory sinus arrhythmia) reactivity during 3D TV and virtual reality fear induction. Study 1 included 62 community adolescents from a stratified sample. Study 2 included 60 adolescents from Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties schools. Results were consistent across both studies. Adolescents with high callous-unemotional traits showed coactivation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Consistent with these results, youths with callous-unemotional traits self-reported that they felt more in control after the fear induction. Thus, in both samples, youth with callous-unemotional traits displayed a physiological and emotional profile suggesting they maintained control during fear induction. Therefore, it is proposed here that a shift in thinking of youth with callous-unemotional traits as fearless to youth with callous-unemotional traits are better able to manage fearful situations, may be more appropriate

    The games industry is beginning to embark on an ambitious journey into the world of biometric gaming in search of more exciting and immersive gaming experiences. Whether or not biometric game technologies hold the key to unlock the “ultimate gaming experience” hinges not only on technological advancements alone but also on the game industry’s understanding of physiological responses to stimuli of different kinds, and its ability to interpret physiological data in terms of indicative meaning. With reference to horror genre games and music in particular, this article reviews some of the scientific literature relating to specific physiological responses induced by “fearful” or “unpleasant” musical stimuli, and considers some of the challenges facing the games industry in its quest for the ultimate “plugged-in” experience

    Intranasal oxytocin increases heart-rate variability in men at clinical high risk for psychosis: a proof-of-concept study

    Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction (i.e., increased sympathetic and/or decreased parasympathetic activity) has been proposed to contribute to psychosis vulnerability. Yet, we still lack directed therapeutic strategies that improve ANS regulation in psychosis or at-risk states. The oxytocin system constitutes a potential therapeutic target, given its role in ANS regulation. However, whether intranasal oxytocin ameliorates autonomic regulation during emerging psychosis is currently unknown. We pooled together two datasets, one of 30 men at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P), and another of 17 healthy men, who had participated in two double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomised, crossover MRI studies with similar protocols. All participants self-administered 40 IU of intranasal oxytocin or placebo using a nasal spray. We recorded pulse plethysmography during a period of 8 min at about 1 h post dosing and estimated heart rate (HR) and high-frequency HR variability (HF-HRV), an index of cardio-parasympathetic activity. CHR-P and healthy men did not differ at resting HR or HF-HRV under placebo. We found a significant condition × treatment effect for HF-HRV, showing that intranasal oxytocin, compared with placebo, increased HF-HRV in CHR-P but not in healthy men. The main effects of treatment and condition were not significant. In this proof-of-concept study, we show that intranasal oxytocin increases cardio-parasympathetic activity in CHR-P men, highlighting its therapeutic potential to improve autonomic regulation in this clinical group. Our findings support the need for further research on the preventive and therapeutic potential of intranasal oxytocin during emerging psychosis, where we lack effective treatments

    Psychophysiology in the digital age

    The research I performed for my thesis revolved around the question how affect-physiology dynamics can be best measured in daily life. In my thesis I focused on three aspects of this question: 1) Do wearable wristband devices have sufficient validity to capture ANS activity? 2) To what extent is the laboratory design suitable to measure affect-ANS dynamics? 3) Are the affect-ANS dynamics subject to individual differences, both in the laboratory and in daily life? In chapter 2, I validated a shortened version of the Sing-a-Song Stress (SSST) test, the SSSTshort. The purpose of this test is to create social-evaluative stress in participants through a simple and brief design that does not require the involvement of multiple confederates. The results indicated that the SSSTshort was effective in inducing ANS and affective reactivity. This makes the SSSTshort a cost-effective alternative to the well-known Trier-Social-Stress task (TSST), which can be easily incorporated into large-scale studies to expand the range of stress types that can be studied in laboratory designs. In chapter 3, I validated a new wrist worn technology for measuring electrodermal activity (EDA). As expected, the overall EDA levels measured on the wrist were lower than those measured on the palm, likely due to the lower density of sweat glands on the wrist. The analysis demonstrated that the frequency measure of non-specific skin conductance response (ns.SCR) was superior to the commonly used measure of skin conductance level (SCL) for both the palm and wrist. The wrist-based ns.SCR measure was sensitive to the experimental manipulations and showed similar correspondence to the pre-ejection period (PEP) as palm-based ns.SCR. Moreover, wrist-based ns.SCR demonstrated similar predictive validity for affective state as PEP. However, the predictive validity of both wrist-based ns.SCR and PEP was lower compared to palm-based ns.SCR. These findings suggest that wrist-based ns.SCR EDA parameter has a promising future for use in psychophysiological research. In Chapter 4 of my thesis, I conducted the first study to directly compare the relationship between affect and ANS activity in a laboratory setting to that in daily life. To elicit stress in the laboratory, four different stress paradigms were employed, while stressful events in daily life were left to chance. In both settings, a valence and arousal scale was constructed from a nine-item affect questionnaire, and ANS activity was collected using the same devices. Data was collected from a single population, and the affect-ANS dynamics were analyzed using the same methodology for both laboratory and daily life settings. The results showed a remarkable similarity between the laboratory and daily life affect-ANS relationships. In Chapter 5 of my thesis, I investigated the influence of individual differences in physical activity and aerobic fitness on ANS and affective stress reactivity. Previous research has yielded inconsistent results due to heterogeneity issues in the population studied, stressor type, and the way fitness was measured. My study made a unique contribution to this field by measuring physical activity in three ways: 1) as objective aerobic fitness, 2) leisure time exercise behavior, and 3) total moderate-to-vigorous exercise (including both exercise and all other regular physical activity behaviors). In addition, we measured the physiological and affective stress response in both a laboratory and daily life setting. The total amount of physical activity showed more relationships with stress reactivity compared to exercise behavior alone, suggesting that future research should include a total physical activity variable. Our results did not support the cross-stressor adaptation hypotheses, suggesting that if exercise has a stress-reducing effect, it is unlikely to be mediated by altered ANS regulation due to repeated exposure to physical stress
