    Forwarding in energy-constrained wireless information centric networks

    Information Centric Networks (ICNs) have been considered one of the most promising candidates to overcome the disadvantages of host-centric architectures when applied to IoT networks, having the potential to address the challenges of a smart city. One of the foundations of a smart city is its sensory capacity, which is obtained through devices associated with the IoT concept. The more sensors spread out, the greater the ability to sense the city. However, such a scale demands high energy requirements and an effective improvement in the energy management is unavoidable. To improve the energy management, we are proposing an efficient forwarding scheme in energy-constrained wireless ICNs. To achieve this goal, we consider the type of devices, their internal energy and the network context, among other parameters. The proposed forwarding strategy extends and adapts concepts of ICNs, by means of packet domain analysis, neighbourhood evaluation and node sleeping and waking strategies. The proposed solution takes advantage of the neighbourhood to be aware of the moments to listen and forward packets in order to consistently address mobility, improving the quality of content delivery. The evaluation is performed by simulation with real datasets of urban mobility, one from the lagoon of “Ria de Aveiro” and the other from a vehicular network in the city of Porto.     Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment

    In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors, but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and what remains to be addressed in the future

    Estudo do IPFS como protocolo de distribuição de conteúdos em redes veiculares

    Over the last few years, vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) have been the focus of great progress due to the interest in autonomous vehicles and in distributing content not only between vehicles, but also to the Cloud. Performing a download/upload to/from a vehicle typically requires the existence of a cellular connection, but the costs associated with mobile data transfers in hundreds or thousands of vehicles quickly become prohibitive. A VANET allows the costs to be several orders of magnitude lower - while keeping the same large volumes of data - because it is strongly based in the communication between vehicles (nodes of the network) and the infrastructure. The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a protocol for storing and distributing content, where information is addressed by its content, instead of its location. It was created in 2014 and it seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files, comparable to a BitTorrent swarm exchanging Git objects. It has been tested and deployed in wired networks, but never in an environment where nodes have intermittent connectivity, such as a VANET. This work focuses on understanding IPFS, how/if it can be applied to the vehicular network context, and comparing it with other content distribution protocols. In this dissertation, IPFS has been tested in a small and controlled network to understand its working applicability to VANETs. Issues such as neighbor discoverability times and poor hashing performance have been addressed. To compare IPFS with other protocols (such as Veniam’s proprietary solution or BitTorrent) in a relevant way and in a large scale, an emulation platform was created. The tests in this emulator were performed in different times of the day, with a variable number of files and file sizes. Emulated results show that IPFS is on par with Veniam’s custom V2V protocol built specifically for V2V, and greatly outperforms BitTorrent regarding neighbor discoverability and data transfers. An analysis of IPFS’ performance in a real scenario was also conducted, using a subset of STCP’s vehicular network in Oporto, with the support of Veniam. Results from these tests show that IPFS can be used as a content dissemination protocol, showing it is up to the challenge provided by a constantly changing network topology, and achieving throughputs up to 2.8 MB/s, values similar or in some cases even better than Veniam’s proprietary solution.Nos últimos anos, as redes veiculares (VANETs) têm sido o foco de grandes avanços devido ao interesse em veículos autónomos e em distribuir conteúdos, não só entre veículos mas também para a "nuvem" (Cloud). Tipicamente, fazer um download/upload de/para um veículo exige a utilização de uma ligação celular (SIM), mas os custos associados a fazer transferências com dados móveis em centenas ou milhares de veículos rapidamente se tornam proibitivos. Uma VANET permite que estes custos sejam consideravelmente inferiores - mantendo o mesmo volume de dados - pois é fortemente baseada na comunicação entre veículos (nós da rede) e a infraestrutura. O InterPlanetary File System (IPFS - "sistema de ficheiros interplanetário") é um protocolo de armazenamento e distribuição de conteúdos, onde a informação é endereçada pelo conteúdo, em vez da sua localização. Foi criado em 2014 e tem como objetivo ligar todos os dispositivos de computação num só sistema de ficheiros, comparável a um swarm BitTorrent a trocar objetos Git. Já foi testado e usado em redes com fios, mas nunca num ambiente onde os nós têm conetividade intermitente, tal como numa VANET. Este trabalho tem como foco perceber o IPFS, como/se pode ser aplicado ao contexto de rede veicular e compará-lo a outros protocolos de distribuição de conteúdos. Numa primeira fase o IPFS foi testado numa pequena rede controlada, de forma a perceber a sua aplicabilidade às VANETs, e resolver os seus primeiros problemas como os tempos elevados de descoberta de vizinhos e o fraco desempenho de hashing. De modo a poder comparar o IPFS com outros protocolos (tais como a solução proprietária da Veniam ou o BitTorrent) de forma relevante e em grande escala, foi criada uma plataforma de emulação. Os testes neste emulador foram efetuados usando registos de mobilidade e conetividade veicular de alturas diferentes de um dia, com um número variável de ficheiros e tamanhos de ficheiros. Os resultados destes testes mostram que o IPFS está a par do protocolo V2V da Veniam (desenvolvido especificamente para V2V e VANETs), e que o IPFS é significativamente melhor que o BitTorrent no que toca ao tempo de descoberta de vizinhos e transferência de informação. Uma análise do desempenho do IPFS em cenário real também foi efetuada, usando um pequeno conjunto de nós da rede veicular da STCP no Porto, com o apoio da Veniam. Os resultados destes testes demonstram que o IPFS pode ser usado como protocolo de disseminação de conteúdos numa VANET, mostrando-se adequado a uma topologia constantemente sob alteração, e alcançando débitos até 2.8 MB/s, valores parecidos ou nalguns casos superiores aos do protocolo proprietário da Veniam.Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemátic

    Efficient Traffic Management in Urban Environments

    [ES] En la actualidad, uno de los principales desafíos a los que se enfrentan las grandes áreas metropolitanas es la congestión provocada por el tráfico, la cual se ha convertido en un problema importante al que se enfrentan las autoridades de cada ciudad. Para abordar este problema es necesario implementar una solución eficiente para controlar el tráfico que genere beneficios para los ciudadanos, como reducir los tiempos de viaje de los vehículos y, en consecuencia, el consumo de combustible, el ruido, y la contaminación ambiental. De hecho, al analizar adecuadamente la demanda de tráfico, es posible predecir las condiciones futuras del tráfico, y utilizar esa información para la optimización de las rutas tomadas por los vehículos. Este enfoque puede ser especialmente efectivo si se aplica en el contexto de los vehículos autónomos, que tienen un comportamiento más predecible, lo cual permite a los administradores de la ciudad mitigar los efectos de la congestión, como es la contaminación, al mejorar el flujo de tráfico de manera totalmente centralizada. La validación de este enfoque generalmente requiere el uso de simulaciones que deberían ser lo más realistas posible. Sin embargo, lograr altos grados de realismo puede ser complejo cuando los patrones de tráfico reales, definidos a través de una matriz de Origen/Destino (O-D) para los vehículos en una ciudad, son desconocidos, como ocurre la mayoría de las veces. Por lo tanto, la primera contribución de esta tesis es desarrollar una heurística iterativa para mejorar el modelado de la congestión de tráfico; a partir de las mediciones de bucle de inducción reales hechas por el Ayuntamiento de Valencia (España), pudimos generar una matriz O-D para la simulación de tráfico que se asemeja a la distribución de tráfico real. Si fuera posible caracterizar el estado del tráfico prediciendo las condiciones futuras del tráfico para optimizar la ruta de los vehículos automatizados, y si se pudieran tomar estas medidas para mitigar de manera preventiva los efectos de la congestión con sus problemas relacionados, se podría mejorar el flujo de tráfico en general. Por lo tanto, la segunda contribución de esta tesis es desarrollar una Ecuación de Predicción de Tráfico para caracterizar el comportamiento en las diferentes calles de la ciudad en términos de tiempo de viaje con respecto al volumen de tráfico, y aplicar una regresión logística a esos datos para predecir las condiciones futuras del tráfico. La tercera y última contribución de esta tesis apunta directamente al nuevo paradigma de gestión de tráfico previsto, tratándose de un servidor de rutas capaz de manejar todo el tráfico en una ciudad, y equilibrar los flujos de tráfico teniendo en cuenta las condiciones de congestión del tráfico presentes y futuras. Por lo tanto, realizamos un estudio de simulación con datos reales de congestión de tráfico en la ciudad de Valencia (España), para demostrar cómo se puede mejorar el flujo de tráfico en un día típico mediante la solución propuesta. Los resultados experimentales muestran que nuestra solución, combinada con una actualización frecuente de las condiciones del tráfico en el servidor de rutas, es capaz de lograr mejoras sustanciales en términos de velocidad promedio y tiempo de trayecto, ambos indicadores de un menor grado de congestión y de una mejor fluidez del tráfico.[CA] En l'actualitat, un dels principals desafiaments als quals s'enfronten les grans àrees metropolitanes és la congestió provocada pel trànsit, que s'ha convertit en un problema important al qual s'enfronten les autoritats de cada ciutat. Per a abordar aquest problema és necessari implementar una solució eficient per a controlar el trànsit que genere beneficis per als ciutadans, com reduir els temps de viatge dels vehicles i, en conseqüència, el consum de combustible, el soroll, i la contaminació ambiental. De fet, en analitzar adequadament la demanda de trànsit, és possible predir les condicions futures del trànsit, i utilitzar aqueixa informació per a l'optimització de les rutes preses pels vehicles. Aquest enfocament pot ser especialment efectiu si s'aplica en el context dels vehicles autònoms, que tenen un comportament més predictible, i això permet als administradors de la ciutat mitigar els efectes de la congestió, com és la contaminació, en millorar el flux de trànsit de manera totalment centralitzada. La validació d'aquest enfocament generalment requereix l'ús de simulacions que haurien de ser el més realistes possible. No obstant això, aconseguir alts graus de realisme pot ser complex quan els patrons de trànsit reals, definits a través d'una matriu d'Origen/Destinació (O-D) per als vehicles en una ciutat, són desconeguts, com ocorre la majoria de les vegades. Per tant, la primera contribució d'aquesta tesi és desenvolupar una heurística iterativa per a millorar el modelatge de la congestió de trànsit; a partir dels mesuraments de bucle d'inducció reals fetes per l'Ajuntament de València (Espanya), vam poder generar una matriu O-D per a la simulació de trànsit que s'assembla a la distribució de trànsit real. Si fóra possible caracteritzar l'estat del trànsit predient les condicions futures del trànsit per a optimitzar la ruta dels vehicles automatitzats, i si es pogueren prendre aquestes mesures per a mitigar de manera preventiva els efectes de la congestió amb els seus problemes relacionats, es podria millorar el flux de trànsit en general. Per tant, la segona contribució d'aquesta tesi és desenvolupar una Equació de Predicció de Trànsit per a caracteritzar el comportament en els diferents carrers de la ciutat en termes de temps de viatge respecte al volum de trànsit, i aplicar una regressió logística a aqueixes dades per a predir les condicions futures del trànsit. La tercera i última contribució d'aquesta tesi apunta directament al nou paradigma de gestió de trànsit previst. Es tracta d'un servidor de rutes capaç de manejar tot el trànsit en una ciutat, i equilibrar els fluxos de trànsit tenint en compte les condicions de congestió del trànsit presents i futures. Per tant, realitzem un estudi de simulació amb dades reals de congestió de trànsit a la ciutat de València (Espanya), per a demostrar com es pot millorar el flux de trànsit en un dia típic mitjançant la solució proposada. Els resultats experimentals mostren que la nostra solució, combinada amb una actualització freqüent de les condicions del trànsit en el servidor de rutes, és capaç d'aconseguir millores substancials en termes de velocitat faig una mitjana i de temps de trajecte, tots dos indicadors d'un grau menor de congestió i d'una fluïdesa millor del trànsit.[EN] Currently, one of the main challenges that large metropolitan areas have to face is traffic congestion, which has become an important problem faced by city authorities. To address this problem, it becomes necessary to implement an efficient solution to control traffic that generates benefits for citizens, such as reducing vehicle journey times and, consequently, use of fuel, noise and environmental pollution. In fact, by properly analyzing traffic demand, it becomes possible to predict future traffic conditions, and to use that information for the optimization of the routes taken by vehicles. Such an approach becomes especially effective if applied in the context of autonomous vehicles, which have a more predictable behavior, thus enabling city management entities to mitigate the effects of traffic congestion and pollution by improving the traffic flow in a city in a fully centralized manner. Validating this approach typically requires the use of simulations, which should be as realistic as possible. However, achieving high degrees of realism can be complex when the actual traffic patterns, defined through an Origin/Destination (O-D) matrix for the vehicles in a city, are unknown, as occurs most of the times. Thus, the first contribution of this thesis is to develop an iterative heuristic for improving traffic congestion modeling; starting from real induction loop measurements made available by the City Hall of Valencia, Spain, we were able to generate an O-D matrix for traffic simulation that resembles the real traffic distribution. If it were possible to characterize the state of traffic by predicting future traffic conditions for optimizing the route of automated vehicles, and if these measures could be taken to preventively mitigate the effects of congestion with its related problems, the overall traffic flow could be improved. Thereby, the second contribution of this thesis was to develop a Traffic Prediction Equation to characterize the different streets of a city in terms of travel time with respect to the vehicle load, and applying logistic regression to those data to predict future traffic conditions. The third and last contribution of this thesis towards our envisioned traffic management paradigm was a route server capable of handling all the traffic in a city, and balancing traffic flows by accounting for present and future traffic congestion conditions. Thus, we perform a simulation study using real data of traffic congestion in the city of Valencia, Spain, to demonstrate how the traffic flow in a typical day can be improved using our proposed solution.     A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios

    Transmissão oportunística de informação em redes veiculares

    Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesThe development in telecommunications and particularly in wireless communications has been one of the most striking features of the contemporary world. The globalization only has been possible thanks to the evolution of communication technologies which increasingly have allowed to satisfy the constant people's needs of being "always connected" whatever the environment where they are. Concerning the evolution of technologies, vehicular networks have been one of the areas of great interest. This interest has been manifested both in research and in the development of the automotive industry that has produced innovative vehicles which are more and more equipped with new technologies. It is expected that communication in vehicular networks enable not only the communication between vehicles, but also a more comfortable and safe driving, making the user's experience of this type of networks richer and stimulating. The specific characteristics of vehicular networks, namely the high mobility, unpredictable routes, dynamic topology and the consequent and constant loss of connectivity, have been a challenge that has motivated studies to find solutions to these limitations. The work carried out for this dissertation is in the area of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) and it is based on the Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). With this project, identified as "Opportunistic Transmission of Information in Vehicular Networks", we aim to study the communication and transmission of information in these networks which do not allow communication without delays and disruptions. For this purpose it is studied the performance of DTN mechanisms in these networks. In this work it is used the implementation IBR-DTN to test DTN in VANETs. This implementation showed, in previous works, to be the one that presents the best performance comparing it with other existing implementations. The study involved, in an initial phase, reading and analyzing the implementation code so that it was possible to add instructions that allowed to observe the behavior of the implementation in the several tests carried out, as well as the correction of the bugs in the implementation. In the first phase, in laboratory, with fixed nodes and in a controlled environment, several scenarios were created to simulate the possible situations a node can meet: direct transfer with and without delay, indirect transfer (multi-hop) and indirect transfer with delay which corresponds to the store and transport of the bundles (set of information) until the next node. From the analysis of the collected information and observing the corresponding graphs, it was possible to observe that the implementation was working properly in the vehicles equipment for communication. Still in laboratory it was built an heterogeneous network with several devices (servers, NetRiders, Single Board Computers (SBCs), tablet, Raspberry Pi e Macbook) to show the integration of the IBR-DTN implementation and its extension in different equipments. During this test several files were sent among these devices, which were correctly received in the nodes previously defined as destination nodes. After testing and checking that everything was working properly in the laboratory, the same implementation was transferred to a testbed with 25 vehicles and 3 fixed infrastructures in Leixões harbor. In this testbed several DTN routing protocols were tested in order to check which of them showed better performance in the delivery rate of the bundles and of the collected information (the log files were also delivered via DTN) from the On-Board Units (OBUs) to the server, located in the Internet. The routing protocol with static routes to the Road Side Units (RSUs) proved a better efficiency compared to the other protocols. This was due to the the fact that this network is well covered with RSUs, and there is no relation between the historic of contacts and the probability that the vehicles will meet again in the future.O desenvolvimento na área das telecomunicações e, mais particularmente, nas comunicações sem-fios tem sido um dos traços mais marcantes do mundo actual. A globalização só tem sido possível graças à evolução dos meios de comunicação que cada vez mais permitem satisfazer a constante necessidade das pessoas estarem sempre ligadas, qualquer que seja o ambiente em que se encontrem. As redes veiculares têm sido uma das áreas de elevado interesse na evolução das tecnologias. Esse interesse tem-se manifestado tanto ao nível da investigação como ao nível do desenvolvimento da indústria automóvel que tem produzido veículos cada vez mais equipados com novas tecnologias. Prevê-se que a comunicação em redes veiculares permitam não só a comunicação entre os veículos, mas também uma condução mais confortável e segura, tornando a experiência dos utilizadores deste tipo de redes mais rica e estimulante. As características específicas das redes veiculares, nomeadamente a elevada mobilidade, rotas imprevisíveis, topologia dinâmica e a consequente e constante perda de conectividade, tornam-se um desafio que tem motivado estudos no sentido de se encontrarem soluções para essas limitações. O trabalho desenvolvido para esta dissertação insere-se na área das Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs) e baseia-se nas Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). Com este projecto, identificado como "Transmissão Oportunística de Informação em Redes Veiculares", pretende-se estudar a comunicação e envio de informação nas redes que permitem uma comunicação com atrasos e disrupções. Para o efeito é estudado o desempenho de mecanismos de DTN nestas redes. Neste trabalho é utilizada a implementação IBR-DTN para testar DTN nas redes veiculares. Esta implementação mostrou, em trabalhos anteriores, ser aquela que apresenta melhor desempenho face a outras que existem. O estudo envolveu, numa fase inicial, a leitura e analise de código da implementação para que fosse possível adicionar instruções que permitissem observar o comportamento da implementação nos diversos testes realizados, bem como a correcção de erros da implementação. Na primeira fase, em laboratório, com nos fixos e num ambiente controlado, foram realizados vários cenários que mostram as situações possíveis que um nó pode encontrar: transferência direta com e sem atraso, transferência indirecta (multi-hop) e transferência indirecta com atraso que corresponde ao armazenamento e transporte dos bundles (conjunto de informação) até ao próximo nó. A partir da analise da informação recolhida e observação dos gráficos obtidos foi possível verificar o correcto funcionamento da implementação nos equipamentos de comunicação entre veículos. Ainda em laboratório foi construída uma rede heterogénea com diversos dispositivos (servidores, NetRiders, Single Board Computers (SBCs), tablet, Raspberry Pi e Macbook) com o objectivo de mostrar a integração da implementação IBR-DTN e as suas extensões em diferentes equipamentos. Neste teste foram enviados ficheiros entre estes dispositivos, os quais foram recebidos correctamente nos nos definidos como destino. Depois de testar e certificar que tudo funcionava em laboratório, a mesma implementação foi transferida para uma testbed com 25 veículos e 3 infraestruturas fixas, no porto de Leixões. Nesta testbed foram testados diversos protocolos de encaminhamento DTN de forma a verificar qual apresentava melhor desempenho na taxa de entrega dos bundles e da informação recolhida (os ficheiros de log foram também entregues através de DTN) das On-Board Units (OBUs) para o servidor, localizado na Internet. O protocolo com rotas estáticas para as Road Side Units (RSUs) demonstrou uma melhor eficiência em relação aos restantes devido ao facto de esta rede estar bem coberta e de não existir uma relação entre o histórico de contactos e a probabilidade de os veículos se encontrarem novamente

    Wireless communication, sensing, and REM: A security perspective

    The diverse requirements of next-generation communication systems necessitate awareness, flexibility, and intelligence as essential building blocks of future wireless networks. The awareness can be obtained from the radio signals in the environment using wireless sensing and radio environment mapping (REM) methods. This is, however, accompanied by threats such as eavesdropping, manipulation, and disruption posed by malicious attackers. To this end, this work analyzes the wireless sensing and radio environment awareness mechanisms, highlighting their vulnerabilities and provides solutions for mitigating them. As an example, the different threats to REM and its consequences in a vehicular communication scenario are described. Furthermore, the use of REM for securing communications is discussed and future directions regarding sensing/REM security are highlighted
