Gesualdo\u27s Late Madrigal Style: Renaissance or Baroque?
Carlo Gesualdo Prince of Venosaâs sixth and final book of Italian madrigals has puzzled scholars since its resurgence in the early twentieth century. Written during a transition between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Gesualdoâs late madrigals present a musical style that seems to deny any attempt at precise classification with a stylistic movement. So where does Gesualdoâs astonishing style fit within its historical context? And what about his music has drawn the attention of so many scholars? By analyzing representative madrigals of the Mannerist style, a stylistic movement of the Late Renaissance, and the emerging Baroque style, one can understand the general attributes of the musical context in which Gesualdo lived. After identifying the defining characteristics of Gesualdoâs late madrigals, a comparison of Gesualdoâs style and the styles of other madrigalists of his time reveals both the conventional and radical elements of his music. Through this method, one finds that Gesualdoâs compositional style is derivative of the Mannerist movement but pushes the limits of this movement to new extremes, creating a style that would not be heard again for nearly three centuries

In Defense of His Holiness: The Cellini Plaque
The plaque depicting Cellini was donated to Gettysburg College by Reverend Jeremiah Zimmerman, Class of 1873, who later became a lecturer at Syracuse University and a frequent benefactor of Gettysburg College. A highly educated alum, Reverend Zimmerman became a clergyman and traveled the world for over a decade to further his studies, ranging from Asian culture to ancient coinage.
The plaque itself measures 32â x 26.75â x 2.5â, is of considerable weight for a porcelain plate, and is painted in the 19th century academic style to offer a dramatic interpretation of Benvenuto Celliniâs actions during the 1527 Sack of Rome. Specifically, the scene captures a dramatized (or even perhaps imagined) moment of Cellini outside the Castel SantâAngelo, the site of a fortress used by the Holy See to defend against outside invaders. A COMPARATIVE MULTI-TECHNIQUE INVESTIGATION ON MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION OF GILDING LAYERS AND THE CONSERVATION STATE OF 7 PORTUGUESE MANNERIST ALTARPIECES
This paper deals with the multi-analytical comparative characterization of 59 samples of
gilded and polychrome layers from 7 altarpieces studied during the Gilt-Teller project
(www.gilt-teller.pt). The altarpieces studied here belong to seven churches in the areas of
Lisbon, Santarém, Portalegre and Guarda and display stylistic and constructive features
characteristic to the Mannerism carved wood decoration in Portugal. The applied protocol of
investigation characterized the structure and manufacture technique of gilding; identified the
chemical composition of the layers constituting the gilded polychrome decoration; compared
the materials and gilding techniques encountered in the 7 altarpieces and assessed the
conservation state of each altarpiece. The analytical techniques applied to these purposes
were: stereomicroscopy (SM), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy
coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD),
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, ÎŒRaman and ÎŒFTIR/imaging ÎŒFTIR spectroscopies. This
interdisciplinary multi-scale approach was used to elucidate the aspects related to the material
and technical aspects of âtalha douradaâ decoration, answering to these questions: which are
the original materials and layers in the making of the polychromy and which are the ones
added with posterior interventions; which are the relationships between gilding materials and
techniques, regarding the degree of erudition of each case study; which were the main causes
of degradation and influence to their conservation condition

"Renascer" : cordial narrative and mannerist style in Brazilian telenovela
The thesis investigates the telenovela Renascer, reflecting on the continuities and singularities that this title - written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa and directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho - presents in the context of Brazilian soap opera. Therefore, the research starts from a retrospective of the telenovela, which points out the importance of this television gender in the Brazilian culture and in the formation of a national identity. Then, the analysis focuses Renascer from the narrative and style perspectives, outlining an approach that points out the similarities and contrasts between these two aspects that make up the telenovela. Operating the interdisciplinarity of cultural studies, the immersion in the narrative reveals as a ruling idea the Brazilian cordiality, defenced by SĂ©rgio Buarque de Holanda. This characteristic of cordiality reaches related issues, such as the construction of a nostalgia for a traditional, agrarian and patriarchal Brazil, the idealization of an "ideal father", and intimacy of the acquaintanceships, which reinforces myths such as racial democracy. This diagnosis reappears paradoxically in the stylistic field, which if on the one hand consolidates in images and sounds this conservative nostalgia, on the other hand, boasts the power and the modernity of Globo TV, explicit in a stylistic mannerism that promotes a calculated disruption of the television flowDoutoradoMultimeiosDoutor em MultimeiosCAPE

Inspiring Piety: The influence of Caravaggioâs paintings in Santa Maria del Popolo
This article looks at the way Italian Baroque painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio broke from the artistic conventions of the Renaissance and Mannerist styles in his religious paintings to create an entirely new style that reflected the needs of the post-Tridentine Catholic Church. Caravaggio pushed painting throughout Europe in a new direction, away from the idealization of the Renaissance and the artistic extremes of Mannerism, by popularizing realism in art. Caravaggioâs unique style is examined through comparisons of his paintings, The Conversion of Paul, c.1601 and The Martyrdom of Saint Peter, c.1601 in the Roman basilica, Santa Maria del Popolo with older works of the same subjects. His influence and legacy are addressed by looking both at writings by his contemporaries as well as the works of artists across western Europe who copied his style
