    E-Fulfillment and Multi-Channel Distribution – A Review

    This review addresses the specific supply chain management issues of Internet fulfillment in a multi-channel environment. It provides a systematic overview of managerial planning tasks and reviews corresponding quantitative models. In this way, we aim to enhance the understanding of multi-channel e-fulfillment and to identify gaps between relevant managerial issues and academic literature, thereby indicating directions for future research. One of the recurrent patterns in today’s e-commerce operations is the combination of ‘bricks-and-clicks’, the integration of e-fulfillment into a portfolio of multiple alternative distribution channels. From a supply chain management perspective, multi-channel distribution provides opportunities for serving different customer segments, creating synergies, and exploiting economies of scale. However, in order to successfully exploit these opportunities companies need to master novel challenges. In particular, the design of a multi-channel distribution system requires a constant trade-off between process integration and separation across multiple channels.     An enhanced approximation mathematical model inventorying items in a multi-echelon system under a continuous review policy with probabilistic demand and lead-time

    An inventory system attempts to balance between overstock and understock to reduce the total cost and achieve customer demand in a timely manner. The inventory system is like a hidden entity in a supply chain, where a large complete network synchronizes a series of interrelated processes for a manufacturer, in order to transform raw materials into final products and distribute them to customers. The optimality of inventory and allocation policies in a supply chain for a cement industry is still unknown for many types of multi-echelon inventory systems. In multi-echelon networks, complexity exists when the inventory issues appear in multiple tiers and whose performances are significantly affected by the demand and lead-time. Hence, the objective of this research is to develop an enhanced approximation mathematical model in a multi-echelon inventory system under a continuous review policy subject to probabilistic demand and lead-time. The probability distribution function of demand during lead-time is established by developing a new Simulation Model of Demand During Lead-Time (SMDDL) using simulation procedures. The model is able to forecast future demand and demand during lead-time. The obtained demand during lead-time is used to develop a Serial Multi-echelon Inventory (SMEI) model by deriving the inventory cost function to compute performance measures of the cement inventory system. Based on the performance measures, a modified distribution multi-echelon inventory (DMEI) model with the First Come First Serve (FCFS) rule (DMEI-FCFS) is derived to determine the best expected waiting time and expected number of retailers in the system based on a mean arrival rate and a mean service rate. This research established five new distribution functions for the demand during lead-time. The distribution functions improve the performance measures, which contribute in reducing the expected waiting time in the system. Overall, the approximation model provides accurate time span to overcome shortage of cement inventory, which in turn fulfil customer satisfaction

    Closed-loop supply chains: What reverse logistics factors influence performance?

    This paper analyses the inventory and order flow dynamics in closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs). In this kind of supply chains the reverse flow of materials entering the system for recycling purposes complicates the way in which inventories should be managed and replenishment policies should be designed. Specifically, we analyse the relationships between some reverse logistics' factors (remanufacturing lead-time, return rate of recycled products, reverse order policy, and number of supply chain tiers) on the order and inventory variance amplification. We firstly perform a systematic literature review of the related studies. Secondly, by adopting a difference equation math approach and design of experiment we perform a robust what-if analysis of a CLSC under a variety of operational and market conditions. Results show that, ceteris paribus, CLSC outperforms a forward supply chain, both in mono-echelon and multi-echelon structures and under both stationary and turbulent market demands. Furthermore, reducing remanufacturing lead-time and promoting information transparency may be crucial to improve CLSC dynamics. Finally, we use the research findings to provide interesting managerial consideration about how to reduce unnecessary operational members' costs

    The Multi-Location Transshipment Problem with Positive Replenishment Lead Times

    Transshipments, monitored movements of material at the same echelon of a supply chain, represent an effective pooling mechanism. With a single exception, research on transshipments overlooks replenishment lead times. The only approach for two-location inventory systems with non-negligible lead times could not be generalized to a multi-location setting, and the proposed heuristic method cannot guarantee to provide optimal solutions. This paper uses simulation optimization by combining an LP/network flow formulation with infinitesimal perturbation analysis to examine the multi-location transshipment problem with positive replenishment lead times, and demonstrates the computation of the optimal base stock quantities through sample path optimization. From a methodological perspective, this paper deploys an elegant duality-based gradient computation method to improve computational efficiency.     Pull-based supply chain allocation for multi-product in multi-echelon distribution system

    In today\u27s highly competitive market environment, only companies with a highly efficient supply chain management, which integrates all decisions in various levels of planning and operations, can survive. These decisions must be coordinated and under the same goal, which is to minimize the total systemwide costs of the firm while products are manufactured and distributed to end-customers or retailers. In this study, the focus is on a pull-based supply chain, customer demand driven, multiple products and multiple echelon distribution system consisting of m manufacturing centers, n distribution centers, and p retailers or customers. The objectives of this study can be categorized into two parts. The first objective is to present a general framework of the design and configuration of the supply chain network at strategic and tactical planning levels in a single-product and multi-product multi-echelon supply chain systems. The problems deal with determining the appropriate number, location, and size of each manufacturing facility and distribution center/warehouse that should be used within the logistics network. The second objective of the research is to present a methodology for using a pull-based supply chain system both for a single-product system and multi-product system at the operational planning level. The problems deal with determining which products customers will receive from each available manufacturing facility and distribution center, what production quantities of the products should be manufactured by a particular manufacturing facility, and what quantities of each product and ways of shipment should be used from manufacturing facilities to distribution centers and to customers. Based on the nature of these large-scale mixed integer programming problems, decomposition heuristic algorithms based on relationships between primal and dual decompositions are developed. The mathematical models and heuristic algorithms are then demonstrated and evaluated on several sets of randomly generated problems. Although the heuristic algorithms do not guarantee optimum solutions, their results of the test problems suggest that the heuristics are effective in solving fairly large problems with reasonable computational time.
