Market-driven product ontologies: a conceptual framework for customer information integration in product innovation processes

Get PDF
In this paper we introduce a market-driven product ontology for creating market orientation and customer focus in innovation and product development/marketing processes in the extended enterprise. We describe and evaluate the main building blocks and uses of the market-driven product ontology. We describe how the ontology can interact with innovation process system components such as case-based reasoners and TRIZ in order to decrease the knowledge acquisition bottleneck and leverage market learning capabilities. Finally, we discuss the suitability of the proposed solution for the issues at hand

Developing a Framework for Managing Tacit Knowledge in Research using Knowledge Management Models

Get PDF
This research investigates whether and how selected models from Knowledge Management (KM) can be used to devise a framework for building coherent and rigorous methodologies for research in the creative and practice-led disciplines (CPD). This research has arisen from methodological problems of research in art and design in the UK concerning how, and the extent to which, non-propositional and tacit kinds of knowledge (e.g. experiential, procedural) can be included and communicated within research. The proposed research builds on previous studies by the authors into the role and relationship of different kinds of knowledge in research (Niedderer, 2007a, 2007b), and into how knowledge management (KM) and creative disciplines provide complementary insights on how knowledge can be managed and transferred (Imani, 2007). The research investigates whether and how the SECI model (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995; Nonaka, 2000) can be used to develop a framework for managing different kinds of knowledge in research. Our research goes beyond existing approaches by offering a generic and flexible framework which researchers can use to better understand and build their own research methodologies and to integrate individual methods with regard to managing different kinds of knowledge.</p

Challenges of Developing an Interactive Knowledge Warehouse within the Media Industry: Significance of Emergent Frameworks

Get PDF
It has been common practice among organisations to develop standard operating procedures to gain advantages like standardisation, ensure continuity, and deal with contingency needs. Over time, processual perspectives of activity within organisations have enabled appreciation of such practices as what is commonly referred to as organisational knowledge. With recent advances in both recognition of ‘knowledge’ as a form of asset within the organisation, as well as the fact that ‘management’ of such assets requires some sort of a strategy, it is increasingly popular to have strategies to derive optimal benefits. Many organisations keen on leveraging competitive advantage, are therefore involved in designing intranet-based repositories that would both allow sharing as well as recycle experiences to ensure success in future ventures. Whilst the process of knowledge development can be unique to the context, practical dimensions of development may be considerably different from that suggested by established theory. The present paper firstly reviews different frameworks that have come to be recognised as being effective in categorising organisational knowledge. Secondly, in the light of experiences of both authors in developing an interactive knowledge warehouse, the present paper discusses usefulness of these frameworks in estimating and categorising shareable knowledge. Prevalence of non-disclosure and confidentiality conditions would mean that the mentioned organisation would need to remain anonymous. For the purposes of the present paper, the chosen organisation would be referred to as Dresimi

Knowledge Management Systems: The Role of Encouragement

Get PDF
Some organisations appear to be more successful than others at adopting and implementing Knowledge Management (KM) systems. In this paper, the authors investigate why this situation may occur through a case study analysis of two organisations that have implemented KM systems. In the first case, the authors consider why one supposedly technologically literate organisation experienced problems implementing what could be termed a ‘tried and tested’ technical solution. In the second, the authors consider a supposedly technologically illiterate organisation’s more positive experiences with a ‘state of the art’ application. The focus of the analysis is on the interplay amongst the organisational factors that inhibited and facilitated the KM projects. Our case analysis suggests that a key factor is the levels of encouragement/discouragement for the use of the system that occur and their source: the technology, the organisation or both

This study focuses on the analysis of the influence of organizational design variables on knowledge creation within the organization. The impact that enablers have on knowledge creation has been widely demonstrated and established by the relevant literature. Using this assumption as a starting point, this study will consider and explore the differentiation in the knowledge creation using the enablers like intermediate variables. In this way, we can create a model of the relationship between these variables and contrast them with an empirical investigation of a quantitative nature, using a sample of 167 large Spanish firms

The paper addresses the main issues concerning knowledge conceptualization and knowledge dynamics, in the context of Romanian organizations. The links between organizational knowledge, organizational learning and organizational culture are being investigated, with the aim of conceptual clarification and paradigm unification, in a domain of increasing research interest, where increasing complexity implies the risk of increasing confusion.knowledge dynamics, organizational learning, organizational intelligence, organizational culture.
