    Multi-agent evolutionary systems for the generation of complex virtual worlds

    Modern films, games and virtual reality applications are dependent on convincing computer graphics. Highly complex models are a requirement for the successful delivery of many scenes and environments. While workflows such as rendering, compositing and animation have been streamlined to accommodate increasing demands, modelling complex models is still a laborious task. This paper introduces the computational benefits of an Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) to computer graphics modelling while compensating the effects of user fatigue, a common issue with Interactive Evolutionary Computation. An intelligent agent is used in conjunction with an IGA that offers the potential to reduce the effects of user fatigue by learning from the choices made by the human designer and directing the search accordingly. This workflow accelerates the layout and distribution of basic elements to form complex models. It captures the designer's intent through interaction, and encourages playful discovery

    Generative sound art as poeitic poetry for an information society

    This paper considers computer music in relation to broader society and asks what algorithmic composition can learn from the metaphysical shift which is happening in the so-called information societies. This is explored by taking the mapping problem inherent in the use of extra- musical models in generative composition and presenting a simple generative schema which prioritises sound, ex- ploiting the generative potential of digital audio. It is sug- gested that the exploration of such models has more than aesthetic relevance and that the interdisciplinary nature of digital sound art represents a microcosm of an emerging reality, thereby constituting a poietic playground for com- ing to terms with the implications and challenges of the information age

    Using software visualization technology to help genetic algorithm designers

    This work is part of a three year PhD project to examine how Software Visualization(SV) can be applied to support the design and construction of Genetic Algorithms (GAs). A user survey carried out at the start of this project identified a set of key system features required by GA users. A visualization system embodying these features was then designed and a prototype built. This paper describes what genetic algorithms are and how they can be applied. It then reviews some of the survey results and their impact on the design of the visualization system. The paper concludes with an exploration of how the resulting prototype may be evaluated

    Learning in a Landscape: Simulation-building as Reflexive Intervention

    This article makes a dual contribution to scholarship in science and technology studies (STS) on simulation-building. It both documents a specific simulation-building project, and demonstrates a concrete contribution to interdisciplinary work of STS insights. The article analyses the struggles that arise in the course of determining what counts as theory, as model and even as a simulation. Such debates are especially decisive when working across disciplinary boundaries, and their resolution is an important part of the work involved in building simulations. In particular, we show how ontological arguments about the value of simulations tend to determine the direction of simulation-building. This dynamic makes it difficult to maintain an interest in the heterogeneity of simulations and a view of simulations as unfolding scientific objects. As an outcome of our analysis of the process and reflections about interdisciplinary work around simulations, we propose a chart, as a tool to facilitate discussions about simulations. This chart can be a means to create common ground among actors in a simulation-building project, and a support for discussions that address other features of simulations besides their ontological status. Rather than foregrounding the chart's classificatory potential, we stress its (past and potential) role in discussing and reflecting on simulation-building as interdisciplinary endeavor. This chart is a concrete instance of the kinds of contributions that STS can make to better, more reflexive practice of simulation-building.Comment: 37 page

Consideration has been given to clustering and markets. In particular attention has been paid to the levels of creativity found in the London creative industries and the possible implications for public policy intervention. These findings are based on a shared definitional framework, and can be compared with other cities

    In view of the shortcomings of the traditional thinking of computer graphic advertising design, this paper introduces TRIZ innovative thinking to design computer advertising. First of all, combined with specific cases of computer creative print advertising, this paper analyzes the creative methods of stimulating divergent thinking, aggregation thinking and transformation thinking from the innovation principle of TRIZ theory as the origin, and applies them to the creative mechanism and application program of print advertising creativity. The whole process is led by rational principles of perceptual thinking, driven by specific principles of abstract imagination, to explore the thinking source of creative design essence of print advertising. The theory and its application mechanism become a new thinking method and application attempt in the creative field of print advertisement. Then, based on the TRIZ innovation theory, the business model of advertising content arrangement is constructed, and the mathematical model is constructed according to the planning business media resource planning on the business model to realize the multi-objective optimization of efficient use of orders and precise delivery of time. Finally, a multi-objective optimization mathematical model of parallel genetic algorithm is designed to solve the advertisement content arrangement. The innovative thinking of TRIZ and the application of genetic algorithm in content arrangement of computer graphic advertisement design are verified by experiments
