    Inequality Measures Applied to the Diffusion of Mobile Communications within the European Union

    Mobile communications has recently been popular in innovation diffusion studies: Researchers have conducted studies on a nation, a multi-nation, and on a worldwide level. However, although some of the diffusion studies have examined cross-country diffusion processes, there is a lack of research investigating how the disparity of diffusion processes of a given set of countries has evolved. The aim of this study is to empirically measure, whether the diffusion of mobile communications in the European Union has converged or diverged. In this study, this process is quantified by penetration rates of mobile communications subscribers. Subsequently, the annual dispersion is captured by appliance of inequality measures: It is first depicted by Lorenz curves and subsequently measured by GINI coefficients. The tentative results of the study indicate a clear tendency of equalization, measured by the Lorenz curves and Gini coefficients: Thus, the European Union member countries have converged in terms of mobile communications penetration, as foreseen by the learning effect.     Transform modulations for mobile communications

    A new modulation scheme called transform modulations is proposed which improves the system performance in frequency-flat fading mobile channels. They ameliorate the effect of the fadings over the transmitted signal by spreading the information in time, using a linear transform operator. Within the context of this objective, the following goals were set: (1) characterize the present mobile communications industry; (2) determine the market for an improved system for mobile communications; and (3) define the system requirements as seen from the potential customer's viewpoint. The scope of the study was defined by the following parameters: (1) markets were confined to U.S. and Canada; (2) range of operation generally exceeded 20 miles, but this was not restrictive; (3) the classes of potential users considered included all private sector users, and non-military public sector users; (4) the time span examined was 1975 to 1985; and (5) highly localized users were generally excluded - e.g., taxicabs, and local paging

    Voice intelligibility in satellite mobile communications

    An amplitude control technique is reported that equalizes low level phonemes in a satellite narrow band FM voice communication system over channels having low carrier to noise ratios. This method presents at the transmitter equal amplitude phonemes so that the low level phonemes, when they are transmitted over the noisey channel, are above the noise and contribute to output intelligibility. The amplitude control technique provides also for squelching of noise when speech is not being transmitted

    Robust beamforming for interference rejection in mobile communications

    The problem of robust beamformer design in the presence of moving sources is considered. A new technique based on a generalization of the constrained minimum variance beamformer is proposed. The method explicitly takes into account changes in the scenario due to the movement of the desired and interfering sources, requiring only estimation of the desired DOA.
