Semantic Cross-View Matching
Matching cross-view images is challenging because the appearance and
viewpoints are significantly different. While low-level features based on
gradient orientations or filter responses can drastically vary with such
changes in viewpoint, semantic information of images however shows an invariant
characteristic in this respect. Consequently, semantically labeled regions can
be used for performing cross-view matching. In this paper, we therefore explore
this idea and propose an automatic method for detecting and representing the
semantic information of an RGB image with the goal of performing cross-view
matching with a (non-RGB) geographic information system (GIS). A segmented
image forms the input to our system with segments assigned to semantic concepts
such as traffic signs, lakes, roads, foliage, etc. We design a descriptor to
robustly capture both, the presence of semantic concepts and the spatial layout
of those segments. Pairwise distances between the descriptors extracted from
the GIS map and the query image are then used to generate a shortlist of the
most promising locations with similar semantic concepts in a consistent spatial
layout. An experimental evaluation with challenging query images and a large
urban area shows promising results
A spatial data handling system for retrieval of images by unrestricted regions of user interest
The Intelligent Data Management (IDM) project at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center has prototyped an Intelligent Information Fusion System (IIFS), which automatically ingests metadata from remote sensor observations into a large catalog which is directly queryable by end-users. The greatest challenge in the implementation of this catalog was supporting spatially-driven searches, where the user has a possible complex region of interest and wishes to recover those images that overlap all or simply a part of that region. A spatial data management system is described, which is capable of storing and retrieving records of image data regardless of their source. This system was designed and implemented as part of the IIFS catalog. A new data structure, called a hypercylinder, is central to the design. The hypercylinder is specifically tailored for data distributed over the surface of a sphere, such as satellite observations of the Earth or space. Operations on the hypercylinder are regulated by two expert systems. The first governs the ingest of new metadata records, and maintains the efficiency of the data structure as it grows. The second translates, plans, and executes users' spatial queries, performing incremental optimization as partial query results are returned
Cross-View Image Matching for Geo-localization in Urban Environments
In this paper, we address the problem of cross-view image geo-localization.
Specifically, we aim to estimate the GPS location of a query street view image
by finding the matching images in a reference database of geo-tagged bird's eye
view images, or vice versa. To this end, we present a new framework for
cross-view image geo-localization by taking advantage of the tremendous success
of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in image classification and object
detection. First, we employ the Faster R-CNN to detect buildings in the query
and reference images. Next, for each building in the query image, we retrieve
the nearest neighbors from the reference buildings using a Siamese network
trained on both positive matching image pairs and negative pairs. To find the
correct NN for each query building, we develop an efficient multiple nearest
neighbors matching method based on dominant sets. We evaluate the proposed
framework on a new dataset that consists of pairs of street view and bird's eye
view images. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better
geo-localization accuracy than other approaches and is able to generalize to
images at unseen locations
Map Generation from Large Scale Incomplete and Inaccurate Data Labels
Accurately and globally mapping human infrastructure is an important and
challenging task with applications in routing, regulation compliance
monitoring, and natural disaster response management etc.. In this paper we
present progress in developing an algorithmic pipeline and distributed compute
system that automates the process of map creation using high resolution aerial
images. Unlike previous studies, most of which use datasets that are available
only in a few cities across the world, we utilizes publicly available imagery
and map data, both of which cover the contiguous United States (CONUS). We
approach the technical challenge of inaccurate and incomplete training data
adopting state-of-the-art convolutional neural network architectures such as
the U-Net and the CycleGAN to incrementally generate maps with increasingly
more accurate and more complete labels of man-made infrastructure such as roads
and houses. Since scaling the mapping task to CONUS calls for parallelization,
we then adopted an asynchronous distributed stochastic parallel gradient
descent training scheme to distribute the computational workload onto a cluster
