    Indoor Activity Detection and Recognition for Sport Games Analysis

    Activity recognition in sport is an attractive field for computer vision research. Game, player and team analysis are of great interest and research topics within this field emerge with the goal of automated analysis. The very specific underlying rules of sports can be used as prior knowledge for the recognition task and present a constrained environment for evaluation. This paper describes recognition of single player activities in sport with special emphasis on volleyball. Starting from a per-frame player-centered activity recognition, we incorporate geometry and contextual information via an activity context descriptor that collects information about all player's activities over a certain timespan relative to the investigated player. The benefit of this context information on single player activity recognition is evaluated on our new real-life dataset presenting a total amount of almost 36k annotated frames containing 7 activity classes within 6 videos of professional volleyball games. Our incorporation of the contextual information improves the average player-centered classification performance of 77.56% by up to 18.35% on specific classes, proving that spatio-temporal context is an important clue for activity recognition.Comment: Part of the OAGM 2014 proceedings (arXiv:1404.3538

    Efficient and effective human action recognition in video through motion boundary description with a compact set of trajectories

    Human action recognition (HAR) is at the core of human-computer interaction and video scene understanding. However, achieving effective HAR in an unconstrained environment is still a challenging task. To that end, trajectory-based video representations are currently widely used. Despite the promising levels of effectiveness achieved by these approaches, problems regarding computational complexity and the presence of redundant trajectories still need to be addressed in a satisfactory way. In this paper, we propose a method for trajectory rejection, reducing the number of redundant trajectories without degrading the effectiveness of HAR. Furthermore, to realize efficient optical flow estimation prior to trajectory extraction, we integrate a method for dynamic frame skipping. Experiments with four publicly available human action datasets show that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art HAR approaches in terms of effectiveness, while simultaneously mitigating the computational complexity

    A Unified framework for local visual descriptors evaluation

    International audienceLocal descriptors are the ground layer of recognition feature based systems for still images and video. We propose a new framework to explain local descriptors. This framework is based on the descriptors decomposition in three levels: primitive extraction, primitive coding and code aggregation. With this framework, we are able to explain most of the popular descriptors in the literature such as HOG, HOF, SURF. We propose two new projection methods based on approximation with oscillating functions basis (sinus and Legendre polynomials). Using our framework, we are able to extend usual descriptors by changing the code aggregation or adding new primitive coding method. The experiments are carried out on images (VOC 2007) and videos datasets (KTH, Hollywood2 and UCF11), and achieve equal or better performances than the literature

    Exploring the potential of 3D Zernike descriptors and SVM for protein\u2013protein interface prediction

    Abstract Background The correct determination of protein–protein interaction interfaces is important for understanding disease mechanisms and for rational drug design. To date, several computational methods for the prediction of protein interfaces have been developed, but the interface prediction problem is still not fully understood. Experimental evidence suggests that the location of binding sites is imprinted in the protein structure, but there are major differences among the interfaces of the various protein types: the characterising properties can vary a lot depending on the interaction type and function. The selection of an optimal set of features characterising the protein interface and the development of an effective method to represent and capture the complex protein recognition patterns are of paramount importance for this task. Results In this work we investigate the potential of a novel local surface descriptor based on 3D Zernike moments for the interface prediction task. Descriptors invariant to roto-translations are extracted from circular patches of the protein surface enriched with physico-chemical properties from the HQI8 amino acid index set, and are used as samples for a binary classification problem. Support Vector Machines are used as a classifier to distinguish interface local surface patches from non-interface ones. The proposed method was validated on 16 classes of proteins extracted from the Protein–Protein Docking Benchmark 5.0 and compared to other state-of-the-art protein interface predictors (SPPIDER, PrISE and NPS-HomPPI). Conclusions The 3D Zernike descriptors are able to capture the similarity among patterns of physico-chemical and biochemical properties mapped on the protein surface arising from the various spatial arrangements of the underlying residues, and their usage can be easily extended to other sets of amino acid properties. The results suggest that the choice of a proper set of features characterising the protein interface is crucial for the interface prediction task, and that optimality strongly depends on the class of proteins whose interface we want to characterise. We postulate that different protein classes should be treated separately and that it is necessary to identify an optimal set of features for each protein class

    Distinguishing Posed and Spontaneous Smiles by Facial Dynamics

    Smile is one of the key elements in identifying emotions and present state of mind of an individual. In this work, we propose a cluster of approaches to classify posed and spontaneous smiles using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) face features, local phase quantization (LPQ), dense optical flow and histogram of gradient (HOG). Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) is used for micro-expression smile amplification along with three normalization procedures for distinguishing posed and spontaneous smiles. Although the deep CNN face model is trained with large number of face images, HOG features outperforms this model for overall face smile classification task. Using EVM to amplify micro-expressions did not have a significant impact on classification accuracy, while the normalizing facial features improved classification accuracy. Unlike many manual or semi-automatic methodologies, our approach aims to automatically classify all smiles into either `spontaneous' or `posed' categories, by using support vector machines (SVM).     Spatial image polynomial decomposition with application to video classification

    International audienceThis paper addresses the use of orthogonal polynomial basis transform in video classification due to its multiple advantages, especially for multiscale and multiresolution analysis similar to the wavelet transform. In our approach, we benefit from these advantages to reduce the resolution of the video by using a multiscale/multiresolution decomposition to define a new algorithm that decomposes a color image into geometry and texture component by projecting the image on a bivariate polynomial basis and considering the geometry component as the partial reconstruction and the texture component as the remaining part, and finally to model the features (like motion and texture) extracted from reduced image sequences by projecting them into a bivariate polynomial basis in order to construct a hybrid polynomial motion texture video descriptor. To evaluate our approach, we consider two visual recognition tasks, namely the classification of dynamic textures and recognition of human actions. The experimental section shows that the proposed approach achieves a perfect recognition rate in the Weizmann database and highest accuracy in the Dyntex++ database compared to existing methods
