    Steklov Spectral Geometry for Extrinsic Shape Analysis

    We propose using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator as an extrinsic alternative to the Laplacian for spectral geometry processing and shape analysis. Intrinsic approaches, usually based on the Laplace-Beltrami operator, cannot capture the spatial embedding of a shape up to rigid motion, and many previous extrinsic methods lack theoretical justification. Instead, we consider the Steklov eigenvalue problem, computing the spectrum of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of a surface bounding a volume. A remarkable property of this operator is that it completely encodes volumetric geometry. We use the boundary element method (BEM) to discretize the operator, accelerated by hierarchical numerical schemes and preconditioning; this pipeline allows us to solve eigenvalue and linear problems on large-scale meshes despite the density of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann discretization. We further demonstrate that our operators naturally fit into existing frameworks for geometry processing, making a shift from intrinsic to extrinsic geometry as simple as substituting the Laplace-Beltrami operator with the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator.Comment: Additional experiments adde

    Retrieval and classification methods for textured 3D models: a comparative study

    International audienceThis paper presents a comparative study of six methods for the retrieval and classification of tex-tured 3D models, which have been selected as representative of the state of the art. To better analyse and control how methods deal with specific classes of geometric and texture deformations, we built a collection of 572 synthetic textured mesh models, in which each class includes multiple texture and geometric modifications of a small set of null models. Results show a challenging, yet lively, scenario and also reveal interesting insights in how to deal with texture information according to different approaches, possibly working in the CIELab as well as in modifications of the RGB colour space

    An interactive analysis of harmonic and diffusion equations on discrete 3D shapes

    AbstractRecent results in geometry processing have shown that shape segmentation, comparison, and analysis can be successfully addressed through the spectral properties of the Laplace–Beltrami operator, which is involved in the harmonic equation, the Laplacian eigenproblem, the heat diffusion equation, and the definition of spectral distances, such as the bi-harmonic, commute time, and diffusion distances. In this paper, we study the discretization and the main properties of the solutions to these equations on 3D surfaces and their applications to shape analysis. Among the main factors that influence their computation, as well as the corresponding distances, we focus our attention on the choice of different Laplacian matrices, initial boundary conditions, and input shapes. These degrees of freedom motivate our choice to address this study through the executable paper, which allows the user to perform a large set of experiments and select his/her own parameters. Finally, we represent these distances in a unified way and provide a simple procedure to generate new distances on 3D shapes

    dissertationShape analysis is a well-established tool for processing surfaces. It is often a first step in performing tasks such as segmentation, symmetry detection, and finding correspondences between shapes. Shape analysis is traditionally employed on well-sampled surfaces where the geometry and topology is precisely known. When the form of the surface is that of a point cloud containing nonuniform sampling, noise, and incomplete measurements, traditional shape analysis methods perform poorly. Although one may first perform reconstruction on such a point cloud prior to performing shape analysis, if the geometry and topology is far from the true surface, then this can have an adverse impact on the subsequent analysis. Furthermore, for triangulated surfaces containing noise, thin sheets, and poorly shaped triangles, existing shape analysis methods can be highly unstable. This thesis explores methods of shape analysis applied directly to such defect-laden shapes. We first study the problem of surface reconstruction, in order to obtain a better understanding of the types of point clouds for which reconstruction methods contain difficulties. To this end, we have devised a benchmark for surface reconstruction, establishing a standard for measuring error in reconstruction. We then develop a new method for consistently orienting normals of such challenging point clouds by using a collection of harmonic functions, intrinsically defined on the point cloud. Next, we develop a new shape analysis tool which is tolerant to imperfections, by constructing distances directly on the point cloud defined as the likelihood of two points belonging to a mutually common medial ball, and apply this for segmentation and reconstruction. We extend this distance measure to define a diffusion process on the point cloud, tolerant to missing data, which is used for the purposes of matching incomplete shapes undergoing a nonrigid deformation.     Diffusion pruning for rapidly and robustly selecting global correspondences using local isometry

    Finding correspondences between two surfaces is a fundamental operation in various applications in computer graphics and related fields. Candidate correspondences can be found by matching local signatures, but as they only consider local geometry, many are globally inconsistent. We provide a novel algorithm to prune a set of candidate correspondences to those most likely to be globally consistent. Our approach can handle articulated surfaces, and ones related by a deformation which is globally nonisometric, provided that the deformation is locally approximately isometric. Our approach uses an efficient diffusion framework, and only requires geodesic distance calculations in small neighbourhoods, unlike many existing techniques which require computation of global geodesic distances. We demonstrate that, for typical examples, our approach provides significant improvements in accuracy, yet also reduces time and memory costs by a factor of several hundred compared to existing pruning techniques. Our method is furthermore insensitive to holes, unlike many other methods

    Consistent Correspondences for Shape and Image Problems

    Establish consistent correspondences between different objects is a classic problem in computer science/vision. It helps to match highly similar objects in both 3D and 2D domain. Inthe 3D domain, finding consistent correspondences has been studying for more than 20 yearsand it is still a hot topic. In 2D domain, consistent correspondences can also help in puzzlesolving. However, only a few works are focused on this approach. In this thesis, we focuson finding consistent correspondences and extend to develop robust matching techniques inboth 3D shape segments and 2D puzzle solving. In the 3D domain, segment-wise matching isan important research problem that supports higher-level understanding of shapes in geometryprocessing. Many existing segment-wise matching techniques assume perfect input segmentation and would suffer from imperfect or over-segmented input. To handle this shortcoming,we propose multi-layer graphs (MLGs) to represent possible arrangements of partially mergedsegments of input shapes. We then adapt the diffusion pruning technique on the MLGs to findconsistent segment-wise matching. To obtain high-quality matching, we develop our own voting step which is able to remove inconsistent results, for finding hierarchically consistent correspondences as final output. We evaluate our technique with both quantitative and qualitativeexperiments on both man-made and deformable shapes. Experimental results demonstrate theeffectiveness of our technique when compared to two state-of-art methods. In the 2D domain,solving jigsaw puzzles is also a classic problem in computer vision with various applications.Over the past decades, many useful approaches have been introduced. Most existing worksuse edge-wise similarity measures for assembling puzzles with square pieces of the same size, and recent work innovates to use the loop constraint to improve efficiency and accuracy. Weobserve that most existing techniques cannot be easily extended to puzzles with rectangularpieces of arbitrary sizes, and no existing loop constraints can be used to model such challenging scenarios. We propose new matching approaches based on sub-edges/corners, modelledusing the MatchLift or diffusion framework to solve square puzzles with cycle consistency.We demonstrate the robustness of our approaches by comparing our methods with state-of-artmethods. We also show how puzzles with rectangular pieces of arbitrary sizes, or puzzles withtriangular and square pieces can be solved by our techniques
