    Integration of Linux TCP and Simulation: Verification, Validation and Application

    Network simulator has been acknowledged as one of the most flexible means in studying and developing protocol as it allows virtually endless numbers of simulated network environments to be setup and protocol of interest to be fine-tuned without requiring any real-world complicated and costly network experiment. However, depending on researchers, the same protocol of interest can be developed in different ways and different implementations may yield the outcomes that do not accurately capture the dynamics of the real protocol. In the last decade, TCP, the protocol on which the Internet is based, has been extensively studied in order to study and reevaluate its performance particularly when TCP based applications and services are deployed in an emerging Next Generation Network (NGN) and Next Generation Internet (NGI). As a result, to understand the realistic interaction of TCP with new types of networks and technologies, a combination of a real-world TCP and a network simulator seems very essential. This work presents an integration of real-world TCP implementation of Linux TCP/IP network stack into a network simulator, called INET. Moreover, verification and validation of the integrated Linux TCP are performed within INET framework to ensure the validity of the integration. The results clearly confirm that the integrated Linux TCP displays reasonable and consistent dynamics with respect to the behaviors of the real-world Linux TCP. Finally, to demonstrate the application of the INET with Linux TCP extension, algorithms of other Linux TCP variants and their dynamic over a large-bandwidth long-delay network are briefly presented

    Linux is a Unix-like operating system for Intel 386/486/Pentium based IBM-PCs and compatibles. The kernel of this operating system was written from scratch by Linus Torvalds and, although copyrighted by the author, may be freely distributed. A world-wide group has collaborated in developing Linux on the Internet. Linux can run the powerful set of compilers and programming tools of the Free Software Foundation, and XFree86, a port of the X Window System from MIT. Most capabilities associated with high performance workstations, such as networking, shared file systems, electronic mail, TeX, LaTeX, etc. are freely available for Linux. It can thus transform cheap IBM-PC compatible machines into Unix workstations with considerable capabilities. The author explains how Linux may be obtained, installed and networked. He also describes some interesting applications for Linux that are freely available. The enormous consumer market for IBM-PC compatible machines continually drives down prices of CPU chips, memory, hard disks, CDROMs, etc. Linux can convert such machines into powerful workstations that can be used for teaching, research and software development. For professionals who use Unix based workstations at work, Linux permits virtually identical working environments on their personal home machines. For cost conscious educational institutions Linux can create world-class computing environments from cheap, easily maintained, PC clones. Finally, for university students, it provides an essentially cost-free path away from DOS into the world of Unix and X Windows

    Open source wave provides different model in operating system developing. Refer to era before the open source, the number of operating system is very limited and developed by big groups or companies. Now, number of operating system increase very dramatically, the main contribution is Linux Distribution which called Distro. There are many reason in developing a distro, the reason can be purpose, size of hardware, user group etc. Currently, there are more than an hundred distro around the world. The approach to develop distro can differ from one distro to the other. Many number of distro can rise new issues in how to choose an appropriate distro. Indonesia is a developing country, so the budget of IT is very limited. Based on this condition, Indonesia should find economic solution for IT especially for the software. However, piracy software or illegal software is still high in Indonesia. Since two years ago, government of Republic Indonesia has been very serious to consider the Linux or open source as a solution. In the paper, we are interested to look at the relation between number of distro including the sustaining and Linux implementation in desktop and server in Indonesia

    Samba Openldap Performance in a Simulated Environment

    The Information Technology world is developing so fast and it is been reported that Open Source tools will eventually take over proprietary tools in no to distant future. The Open Source Community is integrating its products with that of the proprietary ones and the integration of Windows machines into Linux network is evident of such practices. The purpose of this project is to implement Samba with OpenLDAP in a simulated environment. This implementation is conducted within a virtual environment by simulating the setup of Linux and Windows Operating systems by reducing physical setup of machines. Samba will act as an interface between Linux and Windows, files will be accessible to both server and client. OpenLDAP stores the user accounts and configuration files. A performance test carried out on Samba determining effect on CPU power and Memory usage shows a decrease in the CPU power and an increase in Memory usage

    Video Conferencing Tool (VCT) is a web-based video chat application that allows users anywhere in the world to join real-time streaming video chat rooms. This product is similar to social networking sites that allow web-based video conferencing. The main advantage of VCT compared to existing tools is that it is easy to use and does not require users to download and set up additional hardware. Since this product is a browser-based solution, it allows users from multiple platforms like Windows, Linux, or Mac to join a chat room. My VCT allows users to create new public or private chat rooms or enter into existing chat rooms with the click of a button. VCT allows users to share their live audio and video to all users in the chat room. It also allows users to see the list of attendees in the chat room. VCT users can invite their friends to join video chat rooms by sending a link to their email. Friends can click the link and directly enter chat room without creating an account in VCT. The users also have the option of sending video messages to other users. Adobe Flash Media Server is used as the back end for developing this web site

    Integrated Design and Implementation of Embedded Control Systems with Scilab

    Embedded systems are playing an increasingly important role in control engineering. Despite their popularity, embedded systems are generally subject to resource constraints and it is therefore difficult to build complex control systems on embedded platforms. Traditionally, the design and implementation of control systems are often separated, which causes the development of embedded control systems to be highly time-consuming and costly. To address these problems, this paper presents a low-cost, reusable, reconfigurable platform that enables integrated design and implementation of embedded control systems. To minimize the cost, free and open source software packages such as Linux and Scilab are used. Scilab is ported to the embedded ARM-Linux system. The drivers for interfacing Scilab with several communication protocols including serial, Ethernet, and Modbus are developed. Experiments are conducted to test the developed embedded platform. The use of Scilab enables implementation of complex control algorithms on embedded platforms.
